Holy crap, these stories are intense! I'm so glad that this book was written; for anyone who feels like a "freak" for identifying with fictional characters, this one is a must. The stories are human and thoughtfully written. I don't know why one has never come out before. There are some real eye-openers, like "Wayward AF" by Kim Rhodes and "Stroke Of Luck" by Rob Benedict, not to mention "My Hero Wears A Beanie" and "Sober For Sam". But it's Jared Padalecki's story that really hit me hard. I read it twice crying both times because I've totally been where he is. I am in awe of the honesty and bravery of his essay and truly appreciate how hard it must have been for him to write it and share it with us. Thank you so much, Jared. And thank you, Lynn Zubernis for writing this and making me feel less like a freak! Now I understand WHY I identify the way I do. I am empowered!

To be honest, I bought the book because, well, Supernatural! (duh!) I've been a fan of the show for a few years and have fallen in love with two brothers from Kansas who spend their time fighting monsters, "saving people, hunting things." At the same time, I fell in love with two guys from Texas who have shared so much with us, the Supernatural fandom. They're young enough to be my own; I'm so proud of all they manage to do for the Show, the fans, their families, all of it. That they and their friends are willing to share with us what this fandom, this family, means to them is special. The words written by fans and crew, folks we don't know? Some of whom we've never heard of? As Dean Winchester would say, "Awesome!"Lynn Zubernis does a wonderful job pulling together heartfelt stories from cast, crew, and fans alike. I laughed, cried, and then laughed while I cried. It's that good. She put the book together in a way that it flows, up and down, meandering through topics (some funny, some heart-wrenching, all good) gently and smoothly. At the same time, you can read a chapter and put it down to come back to later. No need to rush through it. (And there are several side articles that explain a few of the charities and organizations that some of these people started/are a part of. Contact information included.)If you're a fan of Supernatural, or if you just want to read what Misha Collins, Kim Rhodes, Jared Padalecki, Matt Cohen, or any one of several other cast members, crew, or fans who contributed, have to say about this Fandom, this is that book. If you're interested in learning more about the Fandom and how it's affected the lives of the people in and around it, this is that book. If you're looking for something that validates you as a fan of a little show that doesn't play by the rules yet still keeps going after 12 seasons, this is that book.

When I originally purchased this book, it was with the intent to read the chapter Jared wrote. Friends told me it was a very emotional experience for them. Between Rob's chapter and Jared's chapter, my friends were in tears while reading. I expected to be devastated. While Jared's chapter and Rob's both hit me hard, it was the fan chapters that were the most intense. This is the book that you can show to your friends and family when they don't understand that Supernatural show you watch or why you want to spend your hard earned money on conventions. This is the book you will show people when they tell you the cast members don't actually care about you and that the "SPNFamily" isn't a real thing. This book is a flashlight illuminating the dark parts of ourselves as people (not just as fans or actors) that we're oftentimes afraid to examine. When you read this book (which you will) please read it with an open heart and an open mind. Do not be afraid to look at the dark parts. Do not avoid the things that will make your heart skip a beat, tears form in your eyes, and your breath catch in your throat. Do not be scared to quietly whisper "Me too," as you read these compelling stories of people finding their home and their hearts in this fandom. This is the book that screams "YOU ARE NOT ALONE AND YOU ARE LOVED" as loudly as it can with so many different voices.

Awesome. Inspiring. What else is there to say? The Fannish Professors have created another great book, amassing the words from and some great pics of our favorite actors--from the best show ever. There are essays from plain old fans, too--just as amazing, and truly touching. In fact, in true SPN fashion, some of the essays and stories even made me cry.Better, this books speaks to some issues that many of us--for whatever reason--seem to possess: anxiety and depression. I ended up giving my copy to my daughter (age 19), who was recently diagnosed after suffering debilitating panic attacks. "We" are not alone! This book proves it--we're not just a fandom--we ARE a family!

I can't begin to describe how grateful I am to have gotten this book. I've dealt with depression, anxiety and social anxiety and started watching Supernatural as a simple distraction. And through this book, I found that I'm not the only one who found so much more within the show and through the cast and crew. Through the SPNFamily. I was left with the feeling healing, comfort, and hope after reading it.

I have not even gotten 1/2 way through this book, and it has touched me so deeply. This goes way beyond any previous ideas most people have of fandoms. Like the show, the messages are clearly positive. Never give up, and you are not alone. Geeks and dorks unite - there is nothing wrong with being true to who YOU are. Very personal and touching. An unexpected jewel.

I started out reading Jared's chapter(sorry I know you aren't suppose to skip to the end LOL) and was crying by the end of it. So beautifully written and heart felt. I have now gone back to the beginning and am reading the rest of the stories. I recommend this book not only for Supernatural fans but for any other fandom that wants to learn what it can truly mean to have a community/family. Would LOVE to have a part 2!

Time Travel: A History

Review

“A fascinating mash-up of philosophy, literary criticism, physics and cultural observation. It’s witty . . . pithy . . . and regularly manages to twist its reader’s mind . . . . Throughout the book [Gleick] displays an acute and playful sensitivity to how quickly language gets slippery when we talk about time . . . a wonderful reminder that the most potent time-traveling technology we have is also the oldest technology we have: storytelling.” —Anthony Doerr, The New York Times Book Review (cover)“Exhilarating . . . Time travel has become a veritable theme park of playful attractions, which Mr. Gleick explores with infectious gusto.” —Michael Saler, The Wall Street Journal“A grand thought experiment, using physics and philosophy as the active agents, and literature as the catalyst. Embedded in the book is a bibliography for the Babel of time—a most exquisitely annotated compendium of the body of time literature. What emerges is an inquiry, the most elegant since Borges, into why we think about time, why its directionality troubles us so, and what asking these questions at all reveals about the deepest mysteries of human consciousness and about what Gleick so beguilingly calls ‘the fast-expanding tapestry of interwoven ideas and facts that we call our culture’...the kind of book that lodges itself in the imagination, planting seeds of ideas, insights, and revelations bound to go on blossoming for the remainder of this lifetime.” —Maria Popova, Brainpickings“Like [David Foster] Wallace, Gleick’s a wide-ranging enthusiast and a graceful explainer….one of the great charms of this book is its author’s willingness to embrace multiple points of view and to credit art and experience as much as theory.” —Kate Tuttle, Los Angeles Times“Extraordinary….Ultimately, Time Travel centers around a single question: Why do we need time travel? To find the answer, Gleick brilliantly stitches together moments at seemingly disparate points in history: He goes from explaining the plot of an episode of Doctor Who in one sentence to revisiting the invention of the Cinématographe in 1890s France the next. But what could be a dizzying narrative is deftly handled. And that’s because Gleick’s adventure in time travel is, in the end, not about distinctions between past and future, but a love letter to ‘the unending now.’” —Adrienne LaFrance, The Atlantic“In his enthralling new book, James Gleick mounts H.G. Wells’s time machine for an invigorating ride through the most baffling of the four dimensions. In these pages, time flies.” —John Banville, author of The Sea“James Gleick is a master historian of ideas—no one else can do what he does. Synthesis leads to elucidation leads to stunning, original insight. Time Travel, like so much of his work, is simply indispensable.” —Charles Yu, author of How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe“Time Travel is another of James Gleick’s superb, unclassifiable books—rich in obscure and illuminating information, laced with lyricism, wit, and startling and convincing insights.  It is an exploration not only of the (theoretical) phenomenon of time travel but of our understanding of ‘time’ itself.” —Joyce Carol Oates “Magnificent. A riveting history of an idea that changed us so profoundly, we forgot we had even been changed. But Gleick remembers.” —Lev Grossman, Books Editor of TIME and author of The Magicians Trilogy“Against Kingsley Amis’ skeptical assertion that ‘time travel is inconceivable,’ Gleick adduces impressive evidence that the phenomenon has tantalized novelists, philosophers, poets, scientists, moviemakers, and even cartoonists as a transformative possibility. Readers follow the fictional ‘Time Traveler’ that H. G. Wells sends into future centuries; track the gyrations of time-spanning thought that Borges unfolds in his labyrinthine tales; ponder the temporal cause-effect paradoxes that Bertrand Russel surmounts; and puzzle over the reversibility of time in the physics with which Einstein revolutionized science….Ultimately, readers discern behind the modern mania for the phenomenon a human craving for immortality that—particularly in a secular age—fosters this mania. Both piquant and profound.” —Booklist *starred review*“A dazzling voyage through the concept of time….Deeply philosophical and full of quirky humor—‘The universe is like a river. It flows. (Or it doesn’t, if you’re Plato.)’—Gleick’s journey through the fourth dimension is a marvelous mind bender.” —Publishers Weekly *starred review*“Engaging…[Gleick’s] book resembles a salon where the guests include physicists (Richard Feynman and Albert Einstein), science-fiction writers (Robert Heinlein, Hugo Gernsback and the inevitable Isaac Asimov), philosophers (Richard Taylor), logicians (Kurt Gödel) and scientist-philosophers (Arthur Eddington), among many other articulate souls. Their discussions draw upon the theater (Tom Stoppard’s “Arcadia”), TV series (“Doctor Who”) and movies (“La Jetée”), as well as books of philosophy and works in theoretical physics….Time Travel presents a great read—as well as a wide-ranging, rich list for further reading—for anyone intrigued by the scientific romance of time travel.” —The Washington Post“Illuminating and entertaining….there isn’t a paragraph in Gleick’s book without good sentences and fascinating information.” —John Lanchester, The New York Review of Books“Fascinating….Gleick’s hybrid of history, literary criticism, theoretical physics, and philosophical meditation is itself a time-jumping, head-tripping odyssey, and it works so well. Even though Gleick can elucidate complex ideas into accessible language, he’s even better at explicating notions that remain perplexing….Time Travel is as elegant and eloquent as it is edifying.” —Jonathan Russell Clark, The Millions“The consummate temporal tour guide, Gleick deftly navigates the twists and turns of our fascination with time travel, investigating its evolution in literature, exploring scientific principles that have hinted at or scotched the idea, and teasing apart the curious spell it cast across society with its suggestion of immortality….Intoxicating.” —The Guardian“Far ranging, accessible, and witty, Time Travel tackles its elusive subject from unusual angles but with fine-tuned focus….Knowledgeable, curious and humane, Gleick proves to be the perfect tour guide for this mind-bending intellectual expedition into the past, present and future.” —San Antonio Express-News  “From Wells to Schrödinger to Twitter, [Gleick] doesn’t miss a beat, and he imparts a wry appreciation for humorous detail, making him one of the most enjoyable science writers in the field….Another fantastic contribution…from Gleick, whose lush storytelling will appeal to a wide range of audiences.” —Kirkus Reviews“Mind-blowing . . . . A fascinating argument that the most important time is the present.” —TIME Magazine“In Time Travel, James Gleick provides an absorbing history of the idea, eloquently elucidating the reasons for its enduring appeal…. Within physics, Gleick captures some of the intellectual ferment in his account of the debate about whether time is an illusion. Within literature, he’s particularly incisive in his account of alternative histories, which originated as an accident of time travel.” —New Scientist“Gleick is particularly well equipped to explore how the idea of time travel evolved across the past century in science, literature, technology and philosophy. Far-ranging, lucid, accessible and witty, 'Time Travel' tackles its elusive subject from unusual angles but with fine-tuned focus.” —SF Gate   “Dazzling.” —The Boston Globe, “Best Books of 2016”“Isaac Newton’s biographer takes a smart, scholarly look at this science fiction staple. With a little help from Gleick, you might finally understand Interstellar.” —Esquire Magazine, "Nine Books That You Need To Know"“A brilliant, wise, insightful and mind-boggling look at the nature of time.” —The Missourian  “A pleasurable romp over Wells’s fourth dimension and polished Victorian machinery; ‘golden age’ science-fiction authors such as Isaac Asimov, who provided the templates for modern treatments of time travel; and the Doctor Who franchise. Gleick also explores more highbrow offerings from writers such as David Foster Wallace and Jorge Luis Borges (who envisaged time as a “Garden of Forking Paths”), and filmmaker Chris Marker, whose 1962 sci-fi short La Jetée inspired 1995 time-travel noir 12 Monkeys.” —Nature“An engaging and entertaining look at science that will always remain fiction. It’s lucidly written, a breeze to read and erudite in assessing a vast range of literary and popular media treatments of time travel as dream and desire.” —Science News“A whirling polymathic joy ride…It’s a work of history that, in its attempt to buck chronology, dissolves the illusory distinctions between science and art, theory and fiction. Gleick reveals a unified culture connected by existential questions and desires to escape the bounds of time and space….Time Travel is most delightful, and fun, when Gleick pulls the lever and connects Everett and Jorge Luis Borges; Isaac Asimov and Augustine; Robert Heinlein and David Foster Wallace; and other thinkers separated, merely, by time and space.” —Joshua Alvarez, Brooklyn Rail   “There’s much to commend….Anyone who picks up Time Travel: A History will find quotes and witticisms galore, a plethora of absorbing historical footnotes and trenchant observations on humanity’s relationship with time….A stunningly learned tour…Joyous.” —Alvaro Zinos-Amaro, Tor.com   “Gorgeous.” —Joshua Kim, Inside Higher Ed   “I thoroughly enjoyed it….An entertaining and informative read, and also a fantastic resource for anyone interested in time travel stories.” —Jonathan H. Liu, GeekDad.com

As usual, Gleick writes about his subject, the cultural phenomenon of interest in time travel, in a insightful and engaging manner. Fans of Gleick's earlier works, however, should know that this book is very different from its predecessors. In Chaos, Gleick described a branch of science that only graduate physics would encounter and explained it to a wider audience. While his work on information science was more wide-ranging it followed a similar pattern. Gleick's biographies of Feynman and Newton explained their contributions to science to those without a technical background.Time Travel, on the other hand, primarily focuses on answering the interesting question, "Why has time travel so consumed the interest of readers of literature since the late 19th century while before it appeared only in hints and scattered fragments?" To answer this, Gleick engages in a thorough review of time-travel literature but only dips his toes into the actual science of time. In other words, the book is more an exploration of a branch of literature than a non-technical introduction to a branch of science.Even so, Time Travel is a good read and I would recommend the book both to those familiar with Gleick's earlier work and those who have not have not enjoyed that particular pleasure.

As a teenager one of my favorite books was H.G. Wells' The Time Machine. I would have given anything to be able to hop onto that Victorian bicycle-type machine, screw on the levers, and roar off into the distant future or ancient past. As James Gleick makes clear in this fascinating book, countless others have shared my dream, both before and after Wells' own time. Time Travel: A History is not an easy book to categorize: it is part scientific treatise, part philosophical musing, and part literary review. It is, however, an easy book with which to fall in love, one of those special though hard to define volumes that makes its readers want to keep it close at hand, to be dipped into whenever the need for wonder is great. The fourteen chapters in Time Travel: A History run roughly, though not consistently, chronologically from the nineteenth century to the present. Of necessity there are a number of scientific and philosophical discussions on whether or not time travel is possible, how, if it should turn out to be possible it might be accomplished, and whether or not such travel would be advisable (the "kill-your-own-grandfather dilemma," for example.) The concepts here are deep, but accessible to an audience which may not have scientific training but does possess a lively sense of curiosity.I found the segments dealing with literary time travel the most interesting. It is rare to find within one volume discussions ranging from Proust to Wells to Heinlein to Le Guin to Finney to Twain to Sterne to Amis to Eliot to Asimov, but Gleick has accomplished it. As a devotee of J.R.R. Tolkien I kept hoping Gleick would include his unfinished time travel tale The Lost Road, but I suppose there have to be limits, even to time travel! (If that piqued your interest I'd recommend Verlyn Flieger's A Question of Time: J.R.R. Tolkien's Road to Faerie.)This is a book of less than 350 pages, including a lengthy bibliography which readers looking for more time wanderings will find invaluable, but it holds within it a wealth of knowledge and speculation. Time Travel: A History, is like the rest of James Gleick's work: a book to be read and reread and savored many times.

Time Travel: A History, could have been pretty short. After all, to quote physicist Stephen Hawking, "The best evidence we have that time travel is not possible, and never will be, is that we have not been invaded by hordes of tourists from the future."But instead of restricting himself to an examination of actual time travel, Gleick leads us through a history of the concept of time travel, which is strikingly modern. Before H.G. Wells, authors and their protagonists dreamt of the past and the future, but no one actually traveled there. Then we leap into a deep discussion of time itself, of memory, and of our dreams of the past and the future. We survey literature, from pulpy short stories of the 1920s and 1930s in such august publications as Amazing Stories and Science Wonder Stories to the novels of authors ranging from Jules Verne and Philip K. Dick to Jorge Luis Borges and Virginia Woolf. We swim through the treatment of time travel in film, from Twelve Monkeys to Back to the Future to Midnight in Paris. In time, we jump from Augustine writing in the fourth century to Dexter Palmer's 2016 novel Version Control. We hear extensively from physicists and philosophers. This book blew my mind 30 times and I loved it. I highly recommend it, even if you don't have an inherent interest in science fiction.A few bits that I liked: * "Time travel is a fantasy of the modern era." * "Stories are like parasites finding a host. In other words, memes. Arrows of the Zeitgeist." * H.G. Wells: "Literature is revelation," said Wells. "Modern literature is indecorous revelation." * Ursula K. Le Guin: "Story is our only boat for sailing on the river of time." * T.S. Eliot: "Words strain, / Crack and sometimes break, under the burden, / Under the tension, slip, slide, perish, / Will not stay still." * Jorge Luis Borges: "El tiempo se bifurca perpetuamente hacia innumerables futuros." * Richard Feynman: "I have approximate answers and possible beliefs and different degrees of certainty about different things, but I'm not absolutely sure of anything." * "We're not very good at understanding causes." * "You can be a time traveler in your own book. If you're impatient, you can skip ahead to the ending." * In Max Beerbohm's 1916 story, "Enoch Soames," a third-rate poet travels one hundred years into the future to see his legacy, which he imagines will be grand. He finds himself listed only as a fictional character in a short story by one Max Beerbohm.

If you are looking for a guide with a lot of photos, this is not for you. But if you want a guide that gives great tips on places to stay, eat, and see...this is that guide. Included is a lot of history of the area, especially the wine region, which I found interesting. There are nice maps of Niagara Falls, Ontario and the surrounding towns. There are suggested iteneraries for one, two, or three days trips. I found a lot of good money saving tips such as where to buy multi-attraction passes, and the fact that there are a lot of taxes added to restaurant bills (thats good information when you are expecting one price and its 25% higher due to the taxes!). I also appreciated that there were tips about attractions that were "overrated" so that I wont spend time or money on those places. We are going to visit this area in June and this is the book I intend to take, it has helped us make decisions on what to see and do during our time there.

We inadvertently purchased the "Niagara Region" Frommers guide for our trip to the Falls, and it opened up a wonderful new region to us.First, the book did a great job helping us 'navigate' the traditional Falls activities. Maid of the Mist, Caves of the Wind, etc. are all included and well-described. So this is a great tool for satisfying the kids. Also, and more important to adults, it includes the larger Niagara Peninsula outside the immediate Falls area. This wonderful region not far from Toronto reminded us of the Napa Valley or the South Fork of Long Island (aka the Hamptons). Like these regions, the Niagara Peninsula obviously benefits from serious investment from city dwellers visiting on weekends.Highlights include: some charming towns like Niagara-on-the-Lake; 84 (!) wineries in multiple appellations; great restaurants and Inns; bike paths, and water vistas; pick-your-own farms (peaches and strawberries are fabulous); interesting geological terrain helping viniculture; and other culture like the Shaw Festival. For the kids, the book showed which wine tours were kid-friendly, so served grape juice tastings alongside the adult wine tastings. While sitting on the terrace at the Peller Estates winery having an excellent, formal service lunch while overlooking the rows of vines, my partner said, "Wow, we could be in Napa right now...."

I thank myself for all the searching I did to find a book like this on amazon.com. This is probably the bestselling book devoted to Niagara Falls which is from a well-known travel guide series.272 pages is without contradiction enough to satisfy me. Even though this book mostly covers the Canada side, that's where most of the tourists go to, not just because of the Horseshoe Falls, but also because of better hotels and more attractions. As with all regularly updated Frommer's travel guides, it covers all the information necessary, both integral and interesting. These sections include:Restaurants with their average meal price;Information on the excessively high Niagara Falls (Canada side) restaurant tax, which many tourists don't realize until they feel the pinch on their wallets when they notice taxes usually add at least 15-20% to the subtotal, what to expect in a prime tourist area;Tips on money-saving attraction passes, including the widely advertised Adventure Pass;Maps which are easy to comprehend and are very useful;History about the region, including the wine region; andAs with all modern-day Frommer's Travel guides, they give you the best of what to do in the region for those who have short trips. I find the one-, two-, and three-day itinerary suggestions very useful, especially because it's a common feature in Frommer's.Of course all books have disadvantages. This book may not feature an abundant amount of photos, but I do not consider that a significant drawback.Frommer's main competitor, Fodor's has a guide covering Niagara Falls, but unlike Frommer's, Fodor's does not offer a guide covering solely Niagara Falls. Fodor's tries to make more money by consolidating the two cities in the "Toronto" guide. Fodor's is not aware not all tourists visit exclusively Niagara Falls. Of course there are tourists which exclusively visit Toronto, but I would not recommend Fodor's if you're visiting Canada just for Niagara Falls.Good luck and happy reading!

And this one is pretty good. It over-emphasized romance a bit, and concentrated on the Canada side of the Falls, but did mention New York state side. It was useful and helped a lot in planning what we wanted to see as a family and was worth the purchase. The only other guides out there are for much bigger regions and I think the Falls would just get short mention, so this is probably one of the better guides you can get.

I'm heading to a conference in Niagara Falls, NY later this month and bought this book to help me figure out how to spend my limited down time. This book is incredibly family/romance-centric. "You will want a picture of you and your family with the Falls behind you!" "I promise you'll have the most romantic cocktail of your life at this location." I appreciate books that point out family friendly attractions, but the tone is overkill here. That could be a minor annoyance if the information contained in the book was more helpful. I've found it difficult to locate some key information (e.g. how to cross the border by foot). I keep ending up consulting wikitravel or google in lieu of this book.

my husband and I used this on our long weekend trip to Niagra Falls. it is a perfect size to carry with you, although sometimes we needed a better map. descriptions are great and the tips are right on.

This book covers mostly Canadian side aspects, not much on the American side, but maybe all the good stuff is on the Canadian side,,, I will find out, going there next month,,, lots of good wine info, my wife likes that, getting most of my pretrip info from other websites.

Going to Niagara on the Lake. This book had a lot of useful info.

As a vet student looking for more information to benefit my studies, this book was a good deal. Covers a lot of small animal, but is lacking in large animal.

Useful as a reference for Licensed technicians safely taking and positioning radiographs of veterinary patients.

The book I got was a print-on-demand book, and the quality of the images was sub-par. This textbook is supposed to demonstrate ideal radiographs and technique, but the reprinted pages and images were so poor that all of the rads looked over/under-exposed. For example, the illustration of the ideal abdominal film is a black box with only a spine showing. There are many books that print-on-demand works great for, but it doesn't work great for ones where the quality of the illustrations is so important. The actual text was suitable and instructional. I wish I bought a used first edition instead of a new one.

#254,723 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

It is a nice collection of sixty, mostly short, articles and other texts by Einstein, mainly from the 'thirties and 'forties. They are ordered by main subject matter, not chronologically. Quite enjoyable reading. What I didn't like in the Kindle edition is that each article is presented under its title only, without a date or source reference. The date of publication does appear after the titles in the table of contents, and a list of sources are presented in the last section called "Acknowledgements". Looking at this list one discovers that the dates of publication stated there apparently correspond to the antologies the editors used as sources for the articles, which is not necessarily the original publication date of each article. Nothing is said about the context of the articles, except for a few cases. This arrangement is annoying, because knowing the original publication date is crucial for the understanding of the context in which Einstein wrote, particularly in political matters. And having to hop back and forth from the articles to the Acknowledgements list in Kindle in order to find the date and context is a nuisance.

Few, if any, have not heard of Albert Einstein (1879-1955). But how much do most people know about this great personality other than he was an outstanding scientist. The collection of articles in this book reveal the true nature of this great man, in his own words, based on his writings, speeches and sayings on various occasions. The book assumes that learned readers know the basics about Einstein's life; accordingly, it concentrates on the major issues in his later years, i.e. 1930s and 40s.One of those issues is Einstein's deep concern about future wars and peace. Much of his writings dealt with the dawn of the atomic bomb and its devastating effect on the future of human life, especially if left uncontrolled. He repeatedly called for a supra-natural authority to control the spread of this deadly weapon and how the League of Nations Nations and the United Nations should manage this immense responsibility. It is understandable why this problem weighed so heavily on his mind: firstly, as a physicist he was involved in the theory and development of this instrument of mass destruction; and secondly, the achievement of an agreement for the control of this threat was hardly within easy reach, especially after WWII when major powers did not see eye to eye on future peace strategies. When he died in 1955, to his disappointment, no solid international agreement was yet reached and the rift between the Soviet Union and the Western Allies was steadily on the rise.In other articles in this book about 'his people', Einstein deals with a more personal and sensitive subject. He asks : why do people hate the Jews? His opinion is simple and direct: in every nation failures of the ruling classes leads to the search for a culprit. The Jewish people being small and defenceless tend to be accused of being behind major problems . He cites as an example the German loss in WW l and how the Nazi's blamed the Jews for this loss and ended up being severely persecuted. Likewise in Russia during the unrest toward the end of the 19th century when the rulers incited people against the Jews to detract from the intensity of the crisis. Away from national problems, however, how one is to explain the historical displeasure with the Jewish communities within the European societies? Again, his reply is clear but implicit: Envy! He believes that the personality of the Jew as a clever, hard working, successful, and devoted person, naturally, invites envy and resentment.Einstein's view of the Jews of Israel was one of pride for their huge devotion and achievements. Paradoxically, however, he was against the establishment of a Jewish nation. On the contrary, he urged his people to be tolerant and to live and work in harmony with the Palestinians. This again, reflects his wisdom and genuine interest in peace, But, sadly, to this day, his wishes have not materialised.Fuad R. QubeinFeb. 2017

Very interesting writings, on a variety of topics, by one of heroes. Very insightful. Not always fun or easy reading, but very thoughtful and educational. Einstein was not just E=mc2. A nice chance to "visit" with a great man.

I was impressed with the ease of reading the words coming out of such an intelligent mind. This book shows the depth of the philosophical side of Einstein, and gives the reader lots of thoughts and ideas to ponder. Even all these years later, the thoughts and ideas still pertain to current social and political events. A great read for any Einstein fan and any philosophical minded person who would like food for thought. Out of My Later Years: The Scientist, Philosopher, and Man Portrayed Through His Own Words

This was an excellent peek into the mind of Einstein the Humanist. The mathematics were far above my head, but the understanding of the relative position of man in society was not. I am humbled by the love of mankind and the positive expectation that man will accept a moral imperative and move forward through cooperation of science and religion. I was only slightly aware of this side of Einstein and now understand why he was so beloved.

I have read this book before. I am still getting used to my Kindle. So, this is one of my first Kindle books. Einstein has always been a good writer. I guess that is due to all of his work in math and Physics. If you need or want to read some Philosophy written by one of the greats of the 20th Century, than this is a good place to start.

Other than E=MC2, most people today know little of Einstein. These essays on social and political issues are amazing. You get a real sense of the mans limits and spirituality. His short essay on freedom is spot on. I cant imagine how amazing it would be ti have a conversation with Einstein, but this is the next best thing. You get his real thoughts on a myriad of incredibly important issues in the realm of humanity.

Einstein was a genius. In his own words he describes his theory of General Relativity. His use of. examples fosters an understanding of this fascinating man. His description of a a Jew lends itself to enlightenment for the Gentile.I recommend this book.
