Erin Falconer really contextualizes where we are as women in our cultural and political climate. Her book lends a broader perspective for ourselves, and casts a greater vision for what's possible and what it means to "successfully" approach our unique opportunities. This is a book is not a to-do list so much as it is a hopeful reminder. Falconer provides a lot of room for self-evaluation and reflection in an encouraging effort to guide us in aligning our outcomes to our values. This has been a great first read for the new year. It is a point of reference that has already drastically shifted my approach to things in just one month, and I am excited for the accountability it will provide me in the months to come. I highly recommend.

Great read overall. Loved the stories and connective writing. Women have a very specific set of challenges personally and professionally and the way Erin brings it full circle is helpful to any ambitious female trying to figure out how to get it all done. Essential read for anyone trying to "have it all" - it shows you to only way to get it done, is to focus!

This is such a well done book that shares a REAL insight into the authors highs and lows in entrepreneurship... it’s really refreshing, makes it relatable. The tools that the author provides to help get to the core of your *real* productivity are amazing. It’s helped me organize my days and stay inspired to work on my “dream job and life” WITHOUT burning out or doing too much. HIGHLY recommend.

Really good advice about how to decide what matters and create your own personal productivity plan. I read a lot about productivity, but this book feels the most useful in creating something that will actually lead to a satisfying life of better work and more time on the things I care about. Highly recommended.

This book is like getting weeks of therapy for free! Falconer gives a lot of practical tips for improving your life by directing your time and energy to what matters most.

Great read, love how this book allows to reflect and consider personal growth. I would definitely recommend

Had some great ideas. I didn’t give it 5 stars because I have another system I already implemented and I feel is better but doesn’t mean the systems won’t work for others. Was written well and I am definitely interested in her blog.

Such a great book. Learned so much. And I love everything about the author Erin Falconer

Mother Poems, by Hope Anita Smith

From Booklist

With the same lyrical simplicity as in Keeping the Night Watch (2008), Smith writes about an African American child’s grief at the sudden death of her mother. The first poems celebrate Momma’s unconditional love and the intimacy of her embrace in daily life: “I’ve got a momma / who combs and plaits my hair . . . who wraps me in her arms.“ Then suddenly Momma dies, and the child’s “ultimate superhero” is gone. More than half the book is about her shock, sorrow, guilt, anger, and loving memories. Like the poetry, Smith’s simple, torn-paper collages in a folk-art style show the close embraces and vignettes without overwhelming the words. In one unforgettable picture, the child stands tall, her feet in Momma’s shoes. The girl feels bewildered by her friends who hate their mothers. Other adults, including a father and stepfather, get passing mention. Readers will recognize the regret: the last words you remember, “and the words you didn’t say.” Grades 4-7. --Hazel Rochman

Review

“Illustrations in torn-paper collage of a small girl, then a grown teenager, accompany the affecting poems on Smith's latest collection. Scenes of intimacy with a mother, fixing hair or soothing sadness…give way to stark grief when the mother suddenly dies. Smith makes simple drama out of the void she leaves …and of the daughter's acceptance of life with others she learns to love, while not forgetting.” ―New York Times Book Review“Smith's (Keeping the Night Watch) deeply personal collection of poems, accompanied by free-form collages, forms a distinct narrative arc, with early poems striking an easy tone…But after the mother's death, the poems draw on complex emotions and memories that lead, eventually, to rejuvenation.” ―Publishers Weekly“The collection has a depth in character growth that lingers and brings readers back to savor moments again and again.” ―School Library Journal“In this touching sequence of poems, a girl speaks of her relationship with her mother...its literality rings true as the expression of a preteen girl, and the unapologetic sentimentality will touch readers. Each poem imbues the everyday with a luminous sheen of loss, anger, and grief walking the girl through periods of bargaining, sadness, and ache to acceptance and loving memory. Textured paper torn and shaped into faceless figures forms iconic representations of love and longing, adding mute eloquence to an already moving exploration of growing up with and through loss of the one who holds your heart. Encourage patrons to read this in private, where tears can flow freely.” ―BCCB“With the same lyrical simplicity as in Keeping the Night Watch (2008), Smith writes about an African American child's grief at the sudden death of her mother… Like the poetry, Smith's simple, torn-paper collages in a folk-art style show the close embraces and vignettes without overwhelming the words.” ―Booklist“The raw emotion contained in these poems is undeniably visceral...The author supplies her own visual accompaniment, lovely torn-paper collages...” ―Kirkus“This book of poetry...accomplishes the difficult task of taking readers from the banal to the extraordinary...Teens of all ages who have experienced the loss of a loved one will find comfort in this powerful and affecting book of poetry. The raw emotions sting and make the reader flinch, but they also bring the realization that memory is ultimately the gift that brings consolation.” ―VOYA

The book had me fooled. I opened it up and had the notion that what I was dealing with here was just a collection of mom-centric poetry. In my defense, I don't like reading bookflaps and I'd never read a Hope Anita Smith book before. Nope. I hadn't read "The Way a Door Closes" or "Keeping the Night Watch". Also, as a children's librarian I've been trained to think that if a book is called something like "Mother Poems" then it's probably going to be a bunch of unrelated verses about mothers and how swell they are. The kind of thing publishers like to release around the Mother's Day time of the year. As I started reading, I was struck by Smith's voice and sheer clarity of her verse... and then the mother died. Suddenly I had a story on my hands. A tale told in poems about the needs of girls who lose their mamas. Stark and solid, Smith pulls no punches and gives us a strong story infused with the raw pain of loss."She is my mom." Thirty-one poems and that's the thought that cannot leave this young girl's mind. They have the normal mother/daughter relationship. The hugs and kisses. The annoyance and the whining. But through it all they're remarkably close. So much so that when the girl's mother dies she's cast adrift. Told entirely in the first person, we see the pain of losing someone you love and the snail-like crawl back from the feeling of utter abandonment. In this world there are only two people, a mother and a child, and when you take the mother away what's left is a series of thoughtful, moving, utterly honest poems complemented by collage paper illustrations. The sheer hunger of wanting your mother roars through this book. I've never read a collection of poetry that just leapt into that void so unabashed. At times the book resounds with the girl's desperation. "Good Behavior" catalogs her attempts to do everything right. To be the model child who will be rewarded with the return of her mother once again. Then Smith socks in you the gut with the simplicity of those last two lines. "Tomorrow / I will try harder." "Mother Poems" shifts from merely being a sweet series of poems about a mom, to cataloging the stages of grief in a child. The layers of hurt that have to be mended and healed are revealed here. The father hardly plays any part at all, which is interesting. Maybe there's a story behind who he is, but if that's the case it will have to be told in another book. She may die, but the mother in this story overwhelms everyone else, and the dad is left as merely a plot device and not much more. And while she's doing all that with one hand, the other hand is mixing together delicious turns of phrase. "My Mother's Kitchen" discusses an aunt whose cooking leaves something to be desired. "We all `Mmmmm' together / and raise our eyebrows ever so slightly, / hoping the gesture will act as a lever / to open our throats, / allow Aunt Nedra's / home cooking to pass through." Meanwhile the poem "Sound Advice" talks about earning the right to have an attitude. "Get your hands off of your imagination" is what the girl's grandmother says to her when she plants her fists on her (as of yet) nonexistent hips. The turns of phrase ring in your ears as you read them, and linger there like catchy songs when you're done. For the most part, the book is free verse, but once in a while Smith shakes things up a bit. "Dangerous Game" is like that. I can see using this poem with kids. Each stanza is four lines and the final line is always "This is a dangerous game." Here's a taste: "I saw her when I went out one day. / She asked me if I wanted to play. / I should have turned the other way. / This is a dangerous game." Kids should be asked what they think this poem means, particularly when you read the poem right after it "Sleuthing". Because whoever that mother is, she appears and then disappears from the final three poems in the book. Is she a new stepmom? Just a woman who lives on the street? A threat? Smith raises the questions, and then returns to memories of the old mother, and finally the daughter's peace (if not acceptance). Funny choices, but ones that make for great discussion. It's funny that on Ms. Smith's other books she usually is paired with an illustrator. And after reading through "Mother Poems" it seems impossible to think that anyone's art could be better suited to her work than her own. For this book, Ms. Smith creates torn paper collages. The pieces look rough and accidental, though the likelihood is nil that a scrap would just happen to come out indicating the slightest hint of a nose or the raised second finger on a hand. Though supposedly flat they also reveal a certain amount of depth to them. The poem "Sleepover" shows a mother sleeping on her side, arm above head above hand. Next to her, the daughter has flung one of her legs backwards and over the mother's knee. It's very difficult to view this as a picture that wouldn't even lift a centimeter off the page. In this scene there is a layering to people that overwhelms the layers of pulp. The pictures also suggest, though they never outright say, how the mother died. In many of the pictures, the mother is featured as bald or wearing a headwrap of some sort. And maybe it's just a creative stroke on Smith's part, but for people looking for an answer, there's one in the details.Assumptions stamped into the dust, I view "Mother Poems" as a unique, beautiful collection. On the outset, it looks all sunshine and light. Inside, there's more pain than you might think to expect. A book that lures you in with the promise of banality, then hits you over the head with meaning and light. A whole lot of people are about to be surprised.Ages 6-10.

Beautifully written!

I loved it there were a couple spelling errors knowing that what you want it life takes hard work and determination makes it so influential.

I would recommend this book to everyone! It not only teaches you about disability and coping to it, but it also teaches you to enjoy life and accept who you are.

For survivors of stroke who can read, I recommend this book because Newborn's example of persevering and refusing to wallow in self-pity is a good one. However: if your loved one, like mine, cannot speak, read or write after an extended period (more than two years), I would recommend against reading this or any other book written by a stroke survivor. Return to Ithaca was written by a young woman who, five months after her stroke, was living independently and attending classes at Cornell University. Reading it simply underscored the reality of my husband's condition and reflected a sharp contrast between someone who regained language function and someone who has not and probably never will. I am happy for Newborn, and any other stroke survivor who is able to recover the ability to speak, but it is bittersweet to read these types of accounts knowing my husband is not one of the lucky ones. I admire Newborn's spunk, but upon finishing her narrative I found myself revisiting my grief over my husband's and my loss. In short, I not only did not find this book inspiring, I also found it depressing. I know this review is purely subjective so far, so I will add a literary note: while competently written, it contained shades of purple prose and was a bit thin (figuratively and literally) and chirpy.

This is an incredible book, I am an Occupational Therapy student and I found this book to be powerful and insightful. Newborn captures her emotions, thoughts and experiences in such a way that you feel as though you experienced them with her. For those working in rehab settings, knowing someone who had a stroke or stroke survivors, this is a must read. It is pretty short and I was unable to put it down, happy reading!

This book was well written and a reminder to anyone what is really important in life. Survival and living life are not the same.

You can truly see the perspective of a person with a communication disorder and understand them. It helped me be more sensitive to others personal struggles

A family member who knows I have been "experimenting" and creating jewelry with polymer clay for about three years recently sent this book to me for my birthday. I glanced through the book's pages for about twenty-four hours and then investigated the process for returning a gift book to Amazon.Fortunately there is an easy way to return a book without the gift giver knowing what a poor choice the book was. Poor innocent gift giver was probably duped by the book's title.Warning! Any book claiming to teach students about about polymer clay that has poorly focused black and white photos is from amateur city. When teaching about an art subject the author should use crisp color photos (unless you are a disciple of Ansel Adams or a great portrait photographer and have a dramatic photo of Winston Churchill or Maya Angelou).I did not really study the text of the book to see if it was accurate because I was so turned off by the photos on the pages. If the photo examples are so carelessly displayed I felt I could not bother to read the text. This book was the ultimate example of self-publication or vanity press. Read the photograph of the back cover carefully. The last paragraph reads that the company "pulishes". Not "publishes", the company "pulishes". It would seem that they cannot even proofread their own blurb.

#516 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I bought this for my 12 year old son for school reading and he loved it. He's eager to read the other books in the series now.

I read this along with my ten-year-old when it was assigned in school.Jonas lives in a dystopia disguised as a utopia where everyone is cared for and all has a place. Everything is controlled, from the weather, to the number of births in each community. Every family unit is assigned two children and all jobs are assigned by the committee of elders based on an individual’s strengths and interests. There is no want, no lack or homeless. Crime is all but extinct (as are many animals) and the elder residents are pampered and taken care of until the day of their Release to Elsewhere. The children undergo a strict form of training where emphasis is on manners, precise language and obedience. When Jonas turns twelve he is selected as the new Receiver of Memory. As the Receiver in Training , Jonas’ training consists of taking on all the community’s memories from the outgoing Receiver. Once his training begins, Jonas becomes privy to situations, places, sensations and feelings that has him quickly understanding that nothing is as it seems in his idyllic community. The world he lives in vastly differs from the memories of the Giver, and in some instances, is a flat out lie. As he gains knowledge of concepts such as family holidays, seasons, conflict and even color; Jonas realizes that the Sameness of his community is not ideal; it’s cruel brainwashing When faced with this truth, Jonas realizes that he also now has something that the rest of the community doesn't .... a choice. As far as novels that you must read because you are in school and it’s assigned goes, this is probably one of the better ones. I remember when I was in school all the books we had to read were completely boring it truly is a wonder I love reading after the dreck I was exposed to!Jonas world is bleak and boring. Nobody sees color, everyone is taught to be painfully polite as they go about their lives volunteering at various places, discussing their dreams and feelings all the while being totally naïve to the things that they are missing. At least in the Hunger Games, the folks in District Twelve knew they had it bad… the people in Jonas’ community are like the proverbial frogs in the boiling pot. The Giver has provided quite a few topics of discussion for my son and I as I am sure it has provided for his class and I am sure it will continue to provide in the future. While the Giver is identified as Teen & Young Adult, do not, for one minute believe it is written on an elementary level. The topics that are addressed, either in passing or in greater depth are compelling and thought provoking. Even after I finished this book, I find myself thinking about a person, situation or comment and still being affected. The cliffhanger ending will leave the reader with a mixed feeling of relief and curiosity. As part of a quartet of books by Lois Lowry, I am looking forward to reading more books in this series for more glimpses into dystopia through Lois Lowry’s eyes.

Yesterday, I took a road trip with my two daughters to get pick up my 88 year-old grandmother, who will be staying with us through the holiday season. At 5 and 9 years-old, my usual audiobook choices were clearly not an option. So, I found myself listening to some books that definitely are not my usual type, yet again. With over 4 1/2 hours in the car each way, we were able to finish 2 audiobooks from start to finish. By pure coincidence, they both ended up being authored by Lois Lowry. I have never been more engaged in a children's book than I was during this road trip. I was completely lost in these stories, as were my children. The first book that we listened to was 'The Giver'. What a captivating, albeit bleak, fictional world Ms. Lowry has created! I was absolutely spellbound by her storytelling.Set in the future, Jonas lives in a community that has traded their humanity for the illusion of safety. They block anything that would trigger the emotional highs and lows that define a person's life as we now know it. They don't experience the heartache of loss, but they never give in to the joys of life either. They are shells, robotic in their day to day existence and devoid of emotion.Although this is a children's book, it had a feeling eerily similar to George Orwell's '1984'. Independent thinking was non-existent. People "confessed" their thoughts, dreams and rule violations. The presence of the omnipresent leaders in their homes, ruling their lives, was pervasive and all-powerful.Jonas is getting ready to experience the ceremony of 12. This particular ceremony is an important one in the community, a rite of passage into adulthood. It is at this ceremony that each child is assigned their job within the community. They will remain in their assigned role until they are no longer productive and they are "released".Unlike the other children, Jonas is unsure of his calling within the community. He doesn't feel a clear draw to one occupation or another. He is worried of what the future holds for him and he is beginning to notice some unusual things that others do not.Jonas is ultimately assigned a very prestigious role within the community. It is perhaps the most important role in the community, but comes with a tremendous burden. He cannot share his experiences with anyone other than the man that he will be replacing, the current "receiver". As his training progresses, Jonas comes to question everything that he has ever been taught. From beginning to end, this book held my rapt attention. It was beautifully written and thought provoking. 'The Giver' serves as a cautionary tale to the human race, warning of what can become when we censor our very emotions and blot out all of the differences that make us unique individuals. There was plenty of action and suspense along the way. It was also a much more emotional read than I had anticipated. I'll never forget the look on my 9 year-old's face when some of the true meanings of different phrases, like "released", truly sunk in. Don't even get me going on baby Gabe! Luckily, I think most of that went over the head of my 5 year-old.Overall, I thought that this was a spectacular book! It is one that I would not have normally read, but I'm so glad that I did. I can only hope that the lessons learned will resonate with my daughter and the other children that read it. An all-around great story! I'll probably download the next books in the series for our next road-trip to take "Nana" home after the holidays.
