This book is itself a work of genius. Only 10 pages in, I felt compelled to go to Wikipedia to learn who Peter L Bernstein is. He was born rich, attended the best schools, knew the leading mathematicians, statisticians and risk experts of his age, and contributed significantly to the literature himself. This, his most famous book, appeared in 1996 when he was already 77 years old and had completed what for most men would have accounted to three or four careers. It is his gift to posterity, and what a remarkable gift!He writes short but amazingly poignant biographies of the men who developed mathematics from its very inception. The Greeks and Romans were no slouches – they were able to determine that the world was round and pull off engineering feats that required a pretty good knowledge of arithmetic. They were handicapped by their numbering systems, all of which resembled Roman numerals. You simply cannot apply an algorithm to find the product of LXXXII x XCVI the way that you can 82 x 96.The study of probability and risk has always been a mathematical exercise. The deepest early studies concerned games of chance. What are the chances that a pair of fair dice will come up totaling three? What are the odds that that will happen in two rolls? Working this out takes a fair amount of arithmetic. The Romans had the Abacus, and it largely defined what they could do with numbers. It turns out that only in the year 1202 did a fellow named Fibonacci write a book on how to do arithmetic using Arabic numerals. It caught on slowly – Bernstein writes that even in 1500 very few people could use them.Actually, he had been preceded by almost 1000 years by a Greek named Diophantus, who not only extolled the virtue of using a real numbering system in place of letters, but had developed the rules of algebra including the use of letters for variables. The work survived – but nobody read it until the 1700s, when they were astounded to find that it embraced concepts such as negative numbers. The Arab world was at the forefront of civilization at the end of the first millennium. Bernstein writes about one Arab, whose name has been given to "algorithm," and Omar Kayyam as the great mathematicians of that age.Bernstein's history jumps to the Renaissance, at which time the world took a new view of the kinds of problems that ought even to be addressed, the appropriate objects of intellectual curiosity. A lot of them were mathematical. Bernstein introduces an example that he will follow for several centuries. It is easy to state: a and B are playing a game called balla. They agree to continue until one has one six rounds. The game actually stops when A has won five and B three. How should the stakes be divided? In other words, what is the probability that A, who is leading, would actually be the first to win six games? He keeps us in suspense for half of the book with this question. The answer is not difficult from a mathematical respective, but looking for the answer requires a modern frame of mind that did not exist in the early Renaissance. He follows with short biographies of many colorful characters who happened to be mathematical geniuses. Cardano was an obsessive gambler who used algebra to figure his odds. He liked to make arcane bets, such as the chances of failing to throw a six in five roles of a fair die, on which he could calculate the chances of winning and his opposite number could not.Galileo was also a mathematician. He wasn't a gambler, but his patron was, so Galileo did what it took to give the Duke and edge at the gaming tables.Blaise Pascal was a mathematician, philosopher, and religious nut. Bernstein describes Pascal's development of what has become known as Pascal's triangle, the binomial expansion, and its many applications to probability and risk. Pascal was in correspondence with Fermat, famous for his last theorem, and the mathematician/gambler Chevalier de Méré. The three advanced the science of probabilities, defined as the likelihood of an event occuring within a given set of constraints. They started to recognize the distinct notion of risk, where the constraints are not known.I used Pascal's triangle last year. The former president of our Rotary club claimed he had paid his dues all along. The books showed that over the past 2 1/2 years there had been 67 dues payments by other club members recorded without any problems, but none by him. Pascal's triangle provided the odds that there had been five errors in 72 payments, all attributable to the same individual: one in 76 million. I didn't believe him. Unfortunately, as is often the case in human affairs and as Bernstein gets into in later chapters, irrationality won the day and I quit the club.At this point Bernstein's history makes a major jump from the theoretical to the actual. An Englishman named John Graunt compiled actuarial tables for the City of London from 1604 to 1664. It was a massive manual undertaking, looking at the church records from every parish in the city. It provided a great many unintuitive observations, among them the fact that deaths by syphilis were probably attributed to something else. There were systematic problems – not everybody belonged to an Anglican parish. Nevertheless, he was able to establish actuarial tables presenting life expectancy at age is from birth to 76. This was of a great deal of interest as the English crown was raising money by selling annuities.Edmund Halley, the fellow whose name is associated with a comet, saw the problems inherent in dealing with London. It was big and people came and went. Inspired by Graunt, he made the same kind of study for the smaller, stable, inland city of Breslau (now Wroclaw) that served as the best source of actuarial estimates for many decades to come. The story then moves to insurance. This was the age of exploration and Dutch and English were sending ships all over the world. It was a highly profitable but risky business. Out of it grew Lloyd's of London, from a group of underwriters gathering at Lloyd's coffee shop by the wharves. Insurance required forecasting not only the risk of loss, but the probable gain from a voyage. Merchants needed to decide whether the cost was worth the risk. At the same time in Italy, the Monte de Paschi bank was ensuring crops. It had the advantage of serving many geographical regions, and was able to balance risk as the losses in one would almost invariably be offset by profits in another. Note that this is the same bank, the world's oldest, which is failing as I write this in 2016. The nature of risk is changed. His focus shifts to the family of Swiss prodigies, the Bernoulli's, who introduced the human factor. Daniel Bernoulli observed that a gain of $100 was worth more to a man who had only 100 to start with than to a man who started with a thousand. Conversely, the loss of $100 would be more painful to the first. He called this concept "utility."He exemplifies utility in his "Petersburg paradox." Peter tosses a coin and he will continue to toss until it comes up heads. He will pay Paul one ducat if it comes up on the first toss, to if it comes up on the second, four on the third, and so on. With each additional throw on which a head does not show u the money he owes Paul doubles. The question: how much would somebody pay Paul for the privilege of taking his place in this game? This is the paradox. The expected value of the proposition is infinity, but Bernoulli noted that any reasonable man would settle for 20 ducats. It is an issue of utility. Past a certain point, additional money has less and less utility. Bernstein quickly jumps to the stock market. 30 years ago Microsoft and Oracle were in the position to make seemingly endless amounts of money. Today it is Facebook and Amazon. How much are there stocks worth? It is hard to come up with an objective answer.Bernoulli added another concept, that of human capital. Even a beggar has a certain capital – the amount that he can bring in out on the street. If he brings in $2000 a year begging, would it be worthwhile to give up begging for $10,000? This is another hard question to answer. Daniel Bernoulli's addition of the concept of utility has changed our perception of risk and probability, and figures in in some way to all subsequent work. The perpetual question in statistics is "How sure are you?" In the social sciences statisticians are usually content to consider a statistical observation to be valid if the chances are less than 5% that the observation would occur by random chance. When they get down to 1% they are very happy. A practical question would be, how many tosses of a coin do you have to observe before you decide that it is loaded? If he saw a coin come up heads eight times out of 10, would you want to gamble against the person that owned that coin?Bernstein's anecdote is that in one of the German air raids on Moscow World War II, a professor statistics surprised his friends when he showed up at the air raid shelter. He had never been there before. He said "There are 7 million people in Moscow, why should I expect them to hit me." His friends asked him why he changed his mind. He explained "there are 7 million people in Moscow and one elephant. Last night they got the elephant."Here Bernstein introduces Jacob Bernoulli, uncle of Daniel. How do you know? What is moral certainty? Jacob asked the practical question of how much longer a person of any given age was likely to live. He is credited with developing the law of large numbers. The more observations you have, the more likely you are that the average is closed the true average, and the more representative the distribution. We returned to the French de Moivre, who developed the concept of the mean and the standard deviation, though they were not called that at the time. He addressed real-life problems. Suppose a pin factory wants to allow no more than 1/10 of 1% to be defective. How many pins should they sample?Next in line is Thomas Bayes, the author of Bayes' theorem. The idea is that prior knowledge must be taken into account in a probability. The example I like best does not come from Bernstein. Suppose that 80% of the taxis in the city are blue and 20% are green. There has been an accident. A witness says it was a green taxi. Examining the witness reveals that he is accurate 70% of the time. What are the chances it was a green taxi involved in the accident? Bayes says you have to combine the probabilities. The total likelihood is .8x.3 + .2x.7 = .38. 30% of 80% is greater than 70% of 20%. Chances are it was a blue taxi.Bernstein next takes a bit of an aside to discuss Carl Gauss. Gauss was such a remarkable mathematician and made such tremendous contributions to calculus and numerous other areas that he cannot be overlooked. His contribution to the study of probability was not that great, even though the bell curve is named for him: the Gaussian distribution.Bernstein makes a break as he begins chapter 9, stating "up to this point, our story has been pretty much about numbers." This is true – mathematics, and the interesting mathematicians that develop them. The second half of the book concerns the more modern authors, and it goes into statistics rather than mathematics.Francis Galton, Darwin's cousin, laid the foundation for the field of statistics. You gather a sample, you measure it, and you draw statistical inferences from your measurements. He measured everything. Interestingly, although his most famous book was entitled "hereditary genius" it was some of his colleagues and successors that developed intelligence testing. Galton contributed to a great many areas of science. He is best remembered as the father of the eugenics movement, which advocated that smart people breed copiously and the not so smart be encouraged not to. In the course of his studies he observed that the sons of geniuses were only rarely themselves geniuses. There were families, such as his own, the Bernoulli's and the Rothschilds, in which genius seemed to run. But for the most part there was a "regression to the mean," as parents who were extreme by any measure tended to have children who are less extreme. Galton demonstrated why this must be so. If it were not each succeeding generation would have greater extremes than its predecessor. The Frenchman Quetelet was enamored of the normal distribution and went through life looking for applications. The bell curve seem to fit so many things that one observed in life. Galton borrowed extensively from his work in developing his own theories.Karl Pearson, another imminent mathematician and Galton's biographer, was the first name mentioned when I studied statistics. He developed the idea of statistical correlation and the idea of measuring intelligence. He observed as a teacher in English public (that is, private) schools that talent in English, French, music, mathematics and history all correlated. If a student was good and one the chances war were that he would be good in others as well. The correlations between certain subjects, mathematics and physics for instance, were higher than those between perhaps French and music.Chapter 10 begins the discussion of financial markets. Obviously, it is of intense interest to determine which way any particular market is headed. A number of observers noted that stock prices take a random walk – there is no predictable pattern to trading activity over the course of a short period of time. They also observed that regression to the mean is a rule. If the stock market goes up, it will go back down. However, they note also that the timing is unpredictable. The stock market went down in 1929, not to emerge for another decade or more. Interest rates were stable for decades, and then soared in this 1970s and 80s. Then they started to decline and have remained at historic lows. Anybody betting on a regression to the mean would have gone broke before making money.Bernstein returns to the distinction between probability and risk. If you are playing relet, poker or craps, you can compute the odds before you make your bet. Playing the stock market, buying insurance and another similar transactions there are unknown risk factors. Past experience is a guide to future expectations, but many events can disrupt the continuity. Fortunes have been lost on Wall Street by assuming regularities that do not exist. Stocks and bonds go in opposite directions – except when they don't! The risks in foreign markets are not correlated with one another – except when they are! Fortunes are lost, as in Long-Term Capital Management, and gained, as in The Big Short. There is a section on chaos theory, the randomness of it all. There is a lot written about John Maynard Keynes, a household name, and his contemporary Frank Knight. These men's insight was that markets are not impersonal. One player's actions affect the other players. There are sections on game theory. There is a particularly enlightening piece about Federal Reserve board member Alan Blinder, analyzing the different motivations of the federal reserve and the politicians – the Treasury Department and the Congress. The Federal Reserve wants to take credit for stability and low inflation. The Congress wants to take credit for something for nothing programs, spending money. Blinder's analysis demonstrates why these two are not able to come up with an optimal solution – far from it. As is painfully obvious in 2016, the politicians are unwilling to even come close to balancing the budget, and the Federal Reserve accommodates them by continuing to expand the money supply. There are chapters on what one would call the problems of agency. People who manage money are judged in the short term, not the long-term. They are judged by the "prudent man rule". A person takes a bigger risk going against the herd than making the same mistake as everybody else. Bernstein explains why this leads to herd behavior on Wall Street, the markets invariably overshooting on both the upside and the downside. The last great piece of work in the book concerns Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, who was still alive at the writing. This was before Kahneman's magnum opus, Thinking Fast and Slow, although he does a good job of explaining the irrationality of human behavior, even investor behavior. He has a number of examples to demonstrate that the way a question is phrased greatly affects how an investor will react to an identical set of circumstances. It talks about the "endowment effect," the greater reluctance to part with something if you think you own it than if you simply have a chance to acquire it.That is pretty much where he leaves the study of irrationality. The single thinker that I would name as a successor to these would be Nassim Nicholas Talib, whose best known book is The Black Swan. Taleb goes on at length about how inadequate statistics is as a tool for predicting the markets. New situations come into play that are simply not represented by historical data. I will close this review and saying that as I write this, most markets in the world, and these include the major stock markets, bond markets, precious metals markets, and even oil and ordinary commodities markets have the appearance of being manipulated by government and central banks. The way this is phrased is that "there is no price discovery anymore." Prices are all being manipulated to serve the political ends of the powerful: the political establishment, the banks, large companies, and even the academic community. As I write this in December 2016 Britain has just voted to exit the European Union and the United States is just elected Donald Trump, both events absolutely in spite of the above-named powers that be. It appears that the manipulation is coming to an end. Although one cannot tell what comes next, it seems quite obvious that statistics will not be an adequate tool to predict it. Statistical observations from the past few decades are simply useless for predicting the next decade. As Taleb puts it, we are in line for a number of "black swan" events which could not be foreseen by the methodologies that Bernstein covers in this book.

The book is great. It was on my wish list for years and I always pushed it off because I thought it would be a real snooze. In fact, it was an incredibly readable history of how problems of prediction (and risk management) have been handled, starting with mathematicians trying to decide how to split up the prize of an unfinished game of "balla." Some reviews mention it being dry at parts or something to put you to sleep - I disagree; there's no doubt a reader has to engage their brain at parts but I've read much much drier material. Most of the reading is on people, the problems they tried to solve and their brilliant approaches to solve the problem of uncertainty. The reason I gave it four stars is due to the lengthy section toward the finish on the stock market. I think the discussion could have gone on with more on developments in predictive analytics, but the author focused instead on the market as well as decision theory by Kahneman/Tversky. This being said, I can understand the approach since Bernstein was an investment advisor/consultant. Also, the book was written in 1998 and perhaps there wasn't much brewing yet in topics of big data, machine learning or predictive algorithms.Overall, I'd recommend this to anyone interested in probability or in a field that requires you to handle/address risk. This is a good primer for the works by Nassim Taleb such as Fooled by Randomness or The Black Swan.

This book provides a history of how key concepts of probability and statistics were developed and goes on to discuss Modern Portfolio Theory and behavioral finance. It is told in a compelling way that holds the reader's interest. Where it is lacking is in showing the actual mathematics behind these concepts, which would better enable the reader to use them in their own work.Anyone who has taken one college level statistics and probability course, along with a basic finance course, will have already been exposed to the concepts in this book. For those that have not, hopefully it prompts them to study the concepts further so that they have the tools to better make decisions in their own life.

This is an interesting treatise on uncertainty, probability and risk based on the Gods vs. Prometheus metaphor. It includes a detailed historical review from the early conceptualization of probability to some recent developments (up to about 1995). Its emphasis is on the substantive (humanistic) interpretation of probability, yet, some references to the quantitative viewpoint are made. Although scientifically rigorous, the book is very entertaining and reads almost like a novel. The book was delivered timely and in excellent condition by the seller (bargainbookbasement).

Somewhat disjointed and rather over-written; could have used a good editor. Also, outright wrong in some parts - for instance, that the most volatile stocks generate the highest returns. It has been show that this actually works the other way around (most recently by Pim van Vliet, but by others before him too). Maybe these studies had not yet come out when the book was published, but at least the author should not have taken high volatility = high returns as an article of faith like he does.

I'll admit that this book sat on my reading-list for a while in fear that it might perhaps be too technical for a pre-sleep read. I was wrong. All though this book indeed is technical, it is presented through a fascinating narrative that makes it a joy to read. This book will help you understand certain concepts better because it addresses them through a frame that is different from the text books in academia. In brief, I highly recommend this book. I believe that it will strengthen your understanding of technical concepts found in statistics and mathematics.

Excellent book -- a perfect balance of scholarly detail and analysis with readable, entertaining narrative. I felt like I was hiking up the trail or into a cave right behind Bruno David as he was telling me about the site or the art or the culture. This is written for the intelligent lay reader, and important technical terms or archeological procedures are almost always briefly explained in a clear, useful fashion. Major debates in the field and unsettled questions are properly brought into the mix, and the author's humility about how little we know, or ever truly can know, about ancient cultures is really refreshing, and similarly, he cautions about the ways our modern unconscious personal and cultural biases have influenced the field and our views of history generally. The illustrations are very good and there are a lot of them (but never enough!).

I am not an art expert. I have always had a great interest in historical art. I have worked as an illustrator for 46 years. As I read this book Bruno David connected me to the artist and the culture of the past. I thank him for that. Also I am thankful for the extreme mind yoga it takes to wrap your mind around 180,000 plus years ago. Fascinating. I hope I would have qualified to become an artist and found me a nice section of cave wall..

Great book, good illustrations. Amazing how the so called primative brain could be so advanced artistically. Maybe cave man had their geniuses also.

Very well written book with a lot of information that is well presented.

very informative for a history buff like me.

Book arrived in excellent condition

excellent!

Review

“Mid-Century Modern Interiors takes the discipline of interior design history into a new era. From a search for 'Americanness', to a concern with health, to a desire to engage with a range of philosophical and intellectual ideas, Havenhand shows how the work of these reflective designers contained a depth that is often missing today.” ―Kingston University“In her useful and accessible new book, Lucinda Havenhand re-reads period design discourse to illuminate the heterogeneity of mid-century modernism and demonstrate how the leading names in mid-century modern design in the USA engaged with diverse theories of design in their lives and work.” ―University of Hertfordshire“Re-examining the careers and contributions of major mid-century modern designers and re-reading classic texts such as Russel and Mary Wright's Guide to Easier Living (1950) and Richard Neutra's Survival Through Design (1954), Lucinda Havenhand's Mid-Century Modern Interiors focuses upon shared interests in establishing a theoretical and humanistic basis for the interior design profession, grounded in an interplay among efficiency, health, luxury, and vision. This informative and readable study should prove useful for design students and instructors alike.” ―Drexel University

This book has healthy recipies of all kinds, hot, cold and warm soups...including liver cleanse recipies. Some things like watercress are very beneficial and nutritious but I have never bought them before. Very interesting...

It's juicing you pour in a bowl and eat cold. Not for me.

Love soup, so thought it would add to my cookbook selection.

Disappointing recipes.

Good book. Plenty of recipes. Cherie is awesome.

I bought this book after listening to Cherie on a podcast. This book is a must for all soup lovers. I have made most of the soups and they are all filled with wonderful flavor. Even my picky husband loves them. Thank you for creating a book that will stay in my kitchen for life.

Good recipes and take on the soup. More about juicing than it is soup and I still enjoyed the recipes I have tried so far.

I love all books by Cherie Calbom.

The reviews hooked me in. And the many interesting recipes do make it worth the modest price. However, these self-published books are becoming disappointing in the quality of the writing. This, as with a couple of others I have purchased, appear to not even been carefully proof-read. This is the reason for my three stars. The many people giving five stars were very generous--and somewhat misleading.

I'm returning this cookbook - the recipes are not well written, some are not fleshed out. Like "Tasty Tomato Soup" - one of the ingredients is listed as "4 tablespoon cashew" does that mean whole cashews? Other recipes seem like they were just lifted from other recipe books. It's just not well thought out. also no pictures, just text.

First, the ingredients are NOT listed in the order as used. They are scattered, yes, scattered in what looks like a random order. Onions, carrots, celery which are stated go together in a soup, have the carrots in the left column, with the onions and celery in the right column, and not in the order as used...very messy. The directions do NOT apply to my version of the Ultra mini...but then, neither does the book which came with the ultra mini...the one with a dial in the middle! Oh, and at least one recipe said to add something which was NOT in the list of ingredients!!!Company tells me to go to their website for recommended cookbooks. "BUT," I said, "what about a book for this version of the ultra mini with the dial?" "We don't have it yet," was the answer. "Is it in process?" I asked. "Not yet." Geze.Too late to return the pot, but this cookbook only ADDS to the irksome, frustrating pot. I've been cooking a looong time and though I managed to make 2 chicken recipes which were OK, I got no joy from the rice which was fine on top, but mushy on the bottom.Another "be ware" should be the capacity of the pot which one is using. Mine is a 3 qt., and apparently the original version is a 6 qt. The recipe book which came with the pot is for 6 qts....which if I had followed, instead of making a mental image of volume and thus adjusting quantities, might have led to catastrophe.

Being brand new to Instant Pot, I found this cook book very lacking in direction. e.g. Saute setting - the book gives no hint that the pot has to reach HOT before it's ready to open lid and add ingredients. It also does not hint at the fact that you have to cancel Saute setting in order for manual setting to work. As a result, I added two cups of milk way before the pot was ready to saute; watch while milk very slowly came to a boil; proceeded as directed to cook; wound up staying on Saute the whole time. Needless to say, the milk scorched the bottom of the pot. After 30 minutes of scrubbing the pot clean to proceed with the rest of the meal, I was ready to pack up the pot and send it back with tears in my eyes. I had to read the manual that came with the pot and the recipe at the same time. I can't possibly memorize the manual although I read it through and through before starting. No where in this recipe does it say "cancel" Saute then proceed. Almost no direction on the use of the pot to create the recipe.

I hope to return this book because of the errors in it. Many of the nutrient counts are really off. Hard Boiled Eggs (6 of them) have about 480 calories (this is correct) but 39 G of protein (not 13 like book lists) and 36 g of fat, not 13 like listed. Worst-- book says almost 82 g carbs, which should be 6 g. Also no indication of whether the nutrition info is for the 3-egg serving or all 6 eggs. Either way, most of it is wrong.I've used pressure cookers most of my very long life and even some of the times seem really off (too long). I'm afraid to use the recipes, don't want to waste food. And not one picture, not even one. I do not need a pic of every dish but a couple might have been good. And this won't let me give it NO STARS.

A lot of information was learned about cooking. In this book there are good recipes for every day. Very good from cover to cover. Try the recipes for steamed carrots with dill if you want to see how amazingly good a few simple ingredients can taste when you know what to do with them in your Instant Pot Mini Cookbook. There are lost of more elaborate meals too. My favorite so far is the Salmon soup with Basil. It is way better than anything I've made in the Instant Pot before, and many of the recipes in this cookbook are like that!I think the major strength of this book is the recipes and how good they are. There is lost of information included in the book too about Instant Pot Mini, eating healthy, conversions, measurements, avoiding pesticides, when to buy organic, etc. It is all useful and interesting, but the recipes are what makes this a five star cookbook. This book is splendid. I inclined such huge numbers of successful thing from this book. I was really astounded by perceiving what number of imperative recommendations accumulated in such a short book. Creator completed a phenomenal activity. I'll most likely prescribe this book to my loved ones. I really appreciate this book. Thanks to creator.

I don't know about plagiarized recipes, but I agree that green BEEN, instead of green BEAN is sloppy.

Don’t bother with this cookbook. It is poorly written and compiled, lacking a good proofreader as others have said. It is not really written for the Instant Pot as it says to press the natural release setting. There is no such thing on the Instant Pot. I also found one recipe in the book twice on facing pages (steel cut oats with dry fruit and oats with dried fruit).

#5,835 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I picked up Dead Certain by Adam Mizner, partially because some of the pearl-clutching negative reviews on Amazon about how pornographic it is, how the writing was terrible, and how it was contrived and confusing. Since I’m a writer, I like to read across the spectrum to get an idea of what works and what doesn’t. I’m glad I decided to read this book, since it explained why it received largely positive reviews instead of negative. This is not a typical murder mystery, more of a whydunnit than whodunnit, which comes with pros and cons. I think this novel lends itself more to a character study than a mystery or thriller. The point of view character, Ella, is a district attorney who recently crossed enemy lines to work at her father’s prestigious criminal defense firm. Her true passion, however, is singing. Her little sister, Charlotte, is studying for her MFA in writing and has received news that her novel-in-progress is going to be published. Right after Charlotte shares this exciting news with her older sister, she mysteriously goes missing. The structure of the book can lend to some confusion; it functions somewhat as a frame story, beginning with Ella’s point of view and interspersed with segments from the novel Charlotte had written. As we come to find out, Charlotte draws largely from her life to fuel her fiction, and since she goes missing early on, the excerpts of her novel serve as her point of view. Halfway through the book, the narrative shifts again to include a third POV – that of the killer. Since these points of view are first-person, the shifting can prove to be a little off-putting and as the switching becomes more frequent, it can pull the reader out of the story for a moment to become oriented as to which character we are now following. I feel, personally, that it may have served the narrative better to portray Ella and the killer’s points of view from the third person, but I suspect the author might have felt that the first person accounts paralleled Charlotte’s novel better, so I understand why he chose to use first-person across the board.Since the book favors characters over the mystery, I felt that they were well fleshed out and interesting. We get a lot of insight into Ella, who is a seemingly strong woman but carries a lot of self-doubt and regret for the choices she has made in her life. Charlotte isn’t quite as fleshed out. Like the protagonist in her novel, we find out that Charlotte has been having an affair with three different men, and while that serves for some interesting conflict, we never really learn why Charlotte made the choices she did, or why she carried on with all three men. I feel like the use of her novel could have served to flesh out her own psychology a little bit more. Once the killer is revealed and we get his point of view, I found that there was a lack of any facet of him that was particularly sinister or interesting. His reveal was surprising, but I don’t know if dedicating as much of the book to his point of view was worth it. His point of view just wasn’t as interesting as Ella or Charlotte’s.Like others, I also had suspected who the killer was relatively quickly, although I was pleasantly surprised to find I was correct. I have never been a fan of mystery books who throw in showdown with a random killer into the last few pages; I would much rather have the opportunity to guess who the killer is based on the characters and suspects that have been introduced. As I mentioned, I feel like this story was much more about the lives of all the characters wrapped up in this horrible event and what led them to make the choices they did, and less about the mystery itself. The author relied on a lot of contrived devices to draw the killer and Ella together, ones that, as I mentioned, weren’t really fleshed out in his side of the story. Ella also jumped to several conclusions throughout the story, such as assuming her sister was dead after she had been missing for about a day (it just seemed like a sudden jump for her to make, even if the reader knew it was the case). She seems to heavily rely on Charlotte’s unpublished manuscript to drive the investigation, even though she knows Charlotte often makes changes to her stories to hide who the characters are based on. For example, Charlotte is a writer and her boyfriend is an actor, while in the book, she is an actress and her boyfriend is a painter. However, Ella immediately assumes since the fictional lovers are a college student and a banker, their real-life counterparts would be as well. Ella is the one that seems up to mostly come up with new information and leads based purely on Charlotte’s novel and never experiences any pushback from investigators. At one point, Ella confronts one of the suspects and pulls a knife on him before running away. For a respected, established lawyer, she doesn’t seem to meet any resistance at any point of some of her irrational behavior. That said, one thing that was strong in this book was the fact that the author clearly knows the legal and law enforcement system. Mr Mizner is a lawyer, and it was kind of refreshing to have a more accurate outlook on the investigations taking place in the story. While there is some sex in the book, I didn’t find it obscene or unnecessary. There are only a few sex scenes and while they are a bit provocative, they aren’t pornographic. I guess if you are terrified of female sexuality you might want to avoid this book, but since the basis of the investigation is wrapped up in Charlotte’s (terrible) relationship choices, it wasn’t unwarranted. Ella is also involved in a bit of a love triangle which I felt was a little more out of place. While, from the perspective of a human being, I can understand why she would reach out for companionship during that time, I would have liked a little more insight into why she chose the company she did, as opposed to seeking out the support of established friends or female friends, although their absence in the book seems to imply she doesn’t have any. One of her potential beaus could have also served to have been present more to better explain their relationship, both past and present, and its progression. All and all, I really enjoyed this book. It was an easy read, which I don’t think should be insulting. I read it in two sittings and found myself invested in Ella, her father, and in finding out what happened to Charlotte. I personally wish the author would have spent less time fleshing out the lackluster killer and put more into fleshing out Ella and other characters, and giving us a better array of interesting protagonists. I would have liked to have met other friends of Ella’s, or seen the police officer on Charlotte’s case be more involved, and I would have liked to have been strung along a little longer on who the killer might be and had the reveal take place later in the book. From a mystery or thriller standpoint, this book was okay. But when it comes to the characters, I felt like, for its faults, the author created two interesting, dynamic characters, and I found myself experiencing Ella’s grief along with her. The book is not just about the relationship between sisters but also about the secrets we keep from each other, no matter how close we are to another person, and the writer ties in that theme very well throughout the book. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick read who wants a story with a lot of character and a little mystery.

I got this book free through my Prime membership, and like several other reviewers, really wish I could have the few hours of my life back that I spent reading it. The dual identity of the main character is a one-off contrivance, the plot progresses almost entirely through conversation and personal reflection instead of action, and after the half-way point, where the killer's viewpoint starts to be inserted, it got really boring. None of the characters were fleshed out enough for me to root for any of them.

The book inside of a book idea is unusual but I think that the author pulled it off. The beginning of the book, when the author was going between Charlotte's book and Ella's perspective was enjoyable. But half way through when the author switches between the killer's and Ella's perspective and Charlotte's book, it becomes boring. A lot of the scenes are repeated, some of them nearly word for word. There's no mystery anymore. I think that Adam Mitzner doesn't really understand women and needs to learn more about what makes women tick. I couldn't believe at the end when he described how much Charlotte's would be missed, what an angel she was, when the whole story was based on the fact that she was cheating on 3 guys at the same time.I more or less forced myself to finish the book. All in all, I was disappointed.

This was a freebie from Amazon Prime so I wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised. I read it in one sitting. I did figure out who the killer was before it was revealed but that didn't diminish my enjoyment of the book.

I got this on the Kindle first looks program, and I'm glad I didn't follow any of the reviews of this. If I had, I would've missed out on a pretty decent thriller. There needs to be a disclaimer about Ella, this has nothing at all to do with her double life, and it's only mentioned once in the book and it's a moment that makes no sense, but then later it does. The main thing to remember here, is it's a novel that really fits into the current trend of fiction. There's a dark undercurrent running just below the surface, and what I liked most was just how effective Mitzner was able to keep the momentum of the story going while keeping me guessing as to who was responsible for Charlotte's dissappearance. I love books that are layered with different angles. As a reader, I like it when an author attempts to try something different and succeedes. Dead Certain seems like a simple novel, but everyone here has a secret, that's the main theme of the book. Charlotte is having an affair with three men, and one of those men has done something horrible. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. Mitzner is a decent story teller who knows how to keep you engaged. He effectively places Charlotte's unfinished manuscript in as a plot device and it's an effective bit of story telling that adds to the mystery, The main question here, is what happened to Charlotte? The characters here are merely there to keep the story moving, and sometimes, you really don't get to know them enough to care about them, but that's the point. It's the story itself that captured my attention. That's what's important. The only complaint I have is the ending. It felt rushed, and I wish the viewpoint of the guy responsible for Charlotte's disappearance came sooner. He added a dark, twisted arc to the story and I loved every second of it. There's a lot here that could have made the story more powerful, and yes even darker. Aside from that, I found Dead Certain to be a decent thriller, and exactly the type of book I enjoy. When it comes to fiction I always find myself drawn to the darker stuff that adds elements to make it interesting, and fresh. This is one of those books you simply don't read, you devour it.
