I grew up in NY and remember all of the wall signs. This book is so interesting and well put together. Kudos to Mr. Passikoff!

This is the most phenomenal book about New York City! Ever!

Great book! Bought it as a gift for my hubby and he loved it!

There are signs of the past all around us if we would only notice and appreciate them, and The Writing On The Wall" beautifully illustrates this comforting truth. This book explores the many "ghost signs" painted right on buildings that advertised products and services throughout the neighborhoods of New York. Although most of these 19th and 20th century forms of advertisement are in fading condition due to time and the elements, Passikoff has managed to capture them for posterity, providing a curious history of the Big Apple's economic and social development. This book offers a wonderful tour of often forgotten art forms in New York City, many of which are at lest 90 or 100 years old!

As you may read before in other books from the same author, this book has a similar structure on which you can find easy and intermediate recipes, chicken recipes actually. I love getting new recipes for chicken to try because even though you think you've tried it all, even just some small differences to a recipe you thought you knew can make all the difference. Also, because chicken is so versatile, I could eat it several times a week at least and not get tired of it.

While focusing on the life of a relatively obscure individual, this book reveals many details about daily life in the new colony that are not seen elsewhere. Although the subject apparently left no progeny, descendants of early Albany residents will find their ancestors mentioned repeatedly here. The used price is a great value, highly recommended for the family historian.

Donna Merwick's "Death of a Notary" is history/biography of the one person who committed suicide in Albany, NY during the 1600's. Adriaen Janse van Ilpendam was a man who lost his identity as a respected officer of the court when the English conquered the Dutch colony of New York. He was without a country and a language of communications. It was the ending of a writing career, hence an ending of life. New rules prevailed in the courts. "The humiliation of Janse and others as they experienced the loss of language competence and cultural fluency under English rule was real." p. 185. The first fatalities of any military conquest are the private citizens whose lives are destroyed.My early American ancestors were settlers of the original New York colony under their fedudal land development system. We have always been grateful for the exact records kept by the notaries that were so important to the members of the new colony; a part of the culture of their homeland which they brought the the new world. Yet one must admire the new government, which allowed those records to survive. The English couldn't read them, but they respected the evidence of the rule of law and the stability it engenders.Ms. Merwick's work is scholarly, yet readable. It opens a window to the everyday lives of our ancestors. The bibliography is extensive and detailed. She steers clear of revisionist history with her careful historical searches among the fodder for the nuisances of truth that paint a clearer picture of our past for our descendants.Nash Black, author of "Qualifying Laps" and "Sins of the Fathers."

As a history major, I've read and loved a lot of historical works, including "microhistories" like this one--and quite honestly, this is one of the most worst I've ever read. Its most glaring fault is its complete lack of organization; the reader is plunged into a story without any exposition and never really gains his footing. Characters were abruptly introduced and vanished just as suddenly, leaivng readers lost and confused. Her thesis remained vauge and elusive until the last page, making reading the entire book a chore: what was the meaning of all this, I couldn't help but wonder as I read.While the history of Dutch America is no doubt interesting, I couldn't even finish this book, and neither did any of my classmates: truly, the worst on our syllabus.

This is a wonderful book, not only for academics like myself but for anyone interested in understanding the effects of aging on memory, emotion, and interpersonal behavior (among other things). This book is incredibly well-written. It discuss cutting-edge research, including Castel’s own experimental psychological research that demonstrates the salutary effects of aging on meta-cognitive processes.I pre-ordered the book, which will be one of the few books I keep on my shelf and, right now, at my bedside. I especially loved Castel’s discussion of how he personally came to study aging.Also, an incredible recounting of the many interviews Castel did with “elderly Illuminati’s” like Bob Newhart and John Wooden (among others). Castel connects scientific research in aging to the Insights he has gleaned from these interviews.I can’t recommend this book enough.

In this era of mass information and misinformation, a book such as the one written by Professor Castel is refreshing. First and foremost, it is empirical, representing the best of what psychological science knows about differences in aging. Too often books are imbued with opinions, suppositions, etc. Rather, this book is built on a solid foundation that should make all readers confident and comfortable. Second, the book successfully balances both scientific perspectives with well-known examples of aging; this makes the book incredibly well-balanced and accessible. Finally, aging is arguably one of the most important challenges and opportunities of the human condition -- all of us will experience it and all of us are motivated to do it as gracefully as possible. I recommend this book highly as I have no doubt you'll find it rewarding and inspiring.

Better with Age is an insightful mix of anecdotes, common beliefs and scientific case studies of what we can do to better enjoy the aging process. One does not have to be "old" to benefit from the examples in this book. Different ways people learn to use memory (selective memory, prospective memory) more efficiently as we age are highlighted. A fun read for those who don't think about how aging affects our perspective on life.

An excellent resource on the effects of aging on cognition paired with tremendous insights on how to age successfully. Cutting-edge research is presented in an accessible manner and paired with a number of practical suggestions from notable figures from a number of fields. I would recommend this to anyone!

If you read only one book this year, make sure it is *The Idiot*, by Elif Batuman. But if your schedule allows two, read this amazing, charming, inspiring, rectangular book by noted psychologist and handsome transplanted Canadian Dr. Alan Castel. It will inspire you to do good, to think differently about how aging affects cognition, and to reconsider what old age holds for you and your friends, if you have any. Which you don't, because you had enough time to read two books this year.Get a life. Start by getting this book.

Dr. Castel puts the science and the myths on aging into a readable and reassuring perspective, giving us who are indeed the test case for all if these studies, verifiable evidence for how to proceed through the stage of a vigorous older adulthood. . This book both helped me feel that I was indeed doing what is needed, and dispelled some of the alternative factoids invading our internet searches these days. Thank you for this book.

I just finished Professor Alan Castel’s book, “Better with Age, The Psychology of Successful Aging.” As an individual who exceeds 70 years of age, I thought his work was thorough, insightful and very meaningful. Mr. Castel described the challenges and opportunities of the aging process in a thorough, complete manner. I liked the stories, and I love how Castel interweaves the science with the narrative, but my favourite part were definitely the many tips on what I can do now to help me age well. I also really enjoyed the chapter on brain training: with all that you hear about it, it is nice to know what is myth and what seems to work. I bought four more books to give to friends and family — no better gift than a guide on how to live a long healthy happy life!

Kenneth Fraser really knew how to do an excellent job explaining Robotics. My children are very fascinated with robots and just building things and knowing how they work. This book has helped me get closer to my children by us learning how to build a robot together. It explains in easy instructions what you need to do and how you need to do it. This book is very easy to read and follow. I love how it tells the history of robots also. It s so informative my children did not want to put it down. It teaches them not only how to make robots but also the good and bad about robots. I received this book at a discount for an honest review.

Very disappointing - I found grammatical errors from the very beginning. It looks like it was either written in another language and poorly translated or never edited in the first place. There are much better introductions to the subject of robotics available here at Amazon and available for the Kindle. Even for the very low price - I wish I could get my money back.

This book has not been edited due to its many grammar mistakes. It doesn't go into any type of detail and is not useful to me at all. Look for another book you cheapo's
