A very nice basic calendar with a Farmer's Almanac theme. The artwork is nice, but nothing spectacular. Pages are thick, quality is good enough for a gift. Starts with January 2018, ends with December 2018 (does not include part of previous year, as some calendars do). Shows one month at a time. The squares for each day measure 1.5 square inch and are not lined for text (see my photo). There's room enough to write short notes about special days to remember or when it's time to plant or do special tasks in your home or garden. The last pages show 2018 and 2019 at a glance as well as a Planting by the Moon's Phase chart for the United States and Canada.I like it, but I don't love it because I prefer having a larger calendar with more room to write daily reminders. If you don't have a lot to write on your calendar and you're into the Farmer's Almanac, you'll probably like it. But I probably won't buy it again, unless they make a larger one in the future. Theme calendars with pretty pictures are nice, and I thought I'd love this, but I now realize I really don't need the theme. I prefer function over form. This is the calendar I prefer. It's larger and has more room to write notes for each day. The only calendar I have used for many years. Not too big that it can't be put in a file folder. Not too small that you can't mark your appointments on it. Plus you get to garden all year long.

My favorite calendar...I buy the Old Farmers Almanac Calendar every year. I enjoy the art and all the tid bits of gardening trivia and advice. Plus it’s the perfect size; not too big but big enough to write on. Love it.

I have purchased these Old Farmers Almanac calendars for several years now and still love them. The illustrations are beautiful and they have gardening tips, as well as random fun facts in relation to gardening. It lists all the holidays and moon phases. This is a definite must have if you are a gardener or looking for a gift for a gardener!

Yearly staple for home style farmers

Exactly the right size. Plenty of space to write in appointments and special days and I love the sayings on weather lore, planting tips and other interesting facts. It would be perfect if it included best planting days, but then I wouldn't have an excuse to buy the Old Farmer's Almanac, would I?

The illustrations are beautiful, as always. Moon phases, gardening tips and holidays are included. A slightly smaller than usual wall calendar, it still has space for notes. Very satisfied.

I love it. And the gardening tidbits are great. Including what’s a “blue moon “ or a “dog moon”. Fun, beauty and information. When to plant, etc.

After reading The Hidden Life of Tree's, I quickly fell in love with Peter Wollheben's calming yet engaging writing style. Once I learned that he was writing a book about animals, I rushed to my laptop to order my very own copy. As a veterinary student and animal behavior enthusiast, I have read many books regarding the cognition and psychology of both domestic and wild animals. Each book seemed to be repeating the others, making it seem like I was reading the same book 5-6 times.However, Wohlleben's The Inner Life of Animals was able to break the mold regarding animal psychology books and explained the inner thoughts and emotions of animals with a rainbow of colors rather than just in black and white, as most books regarding this subject do. It was such a breath of fresh air to me. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about animals and their complex thoughts.

I was delighted to discover that there was a follow-up to "The Hidden Life of Trees." That book moved me so deeply that I purchased "the Inner Life of Animals" immediately and read it cover-to-cover within a day of receiving it. Like it's predecessor, this book is a celebration of nature and life, coming from a place of love, appreciation, and experience. It's not preachy, nor is it intended to be a formal scientific treatise (although it references the results of numerous scientific studies), which makes for an enjoyable but still enlightening read. I can't imagine anyone reading this book and not leaving with a deepened sense of compassion for all creatures, even those that are generally considered "icky" or scary. I highly recommend this book, as well as The Hidden Life of Trees, and I'm already looking forward to the third installment in the series.

In the interests of full disclosure, let me reveal that I had the privilege of reading the manuscript of this book several years ago as a theological consultant to Zondervan, the publisher. I did not know, however, of the fulsome thanks to my husband Tim in the acknowledgments until I received my review copy a few days ago. Sally Lloyd-Jones, a Redeemer member for many years, has done a wondrous thing. She has captured the plot line of redemption in a children's story Bible that sings the praise of Jesus and his saving grace on every page, in every story. Most children's books of Bible stories are little more than a Christianized version of Aesop's fables, or at best, a Christian adventure cartoon. But Sally goes out of her way in the first pages of the book to reclaim the true story of the Bible: not a book of rules, nor a book of heroes, but: “The Bible is most of all a Story…It's like the most wonderful of fairy tales that has come true in real life! You see, the best thing about this Story is--it's true! There are lots of stories in the Bible, but all the stories are telling one Big Story. The Story of how God loves his children and comes to rescue them.” This is heady theology, often missed in adult preaching and teaching, but fully realized in an age appropriate and attractive form that will delight children and often (at least for me) leave the grown up reader in tears. More wondrously, she has avoided the moralism and legalism that so often characterizes Christian educational materials for children. For five years I worked as an editor of children's curriculum, requiring me to review, edit, and sometimes write Sunday school material for children. It is very hard to find (or even produce) material for children that doesn't essentially contain the message “Be good, so that God, your heavenly Father, will love you, and your earthly parents will be happy with you, too.” To discover The Jesus Storybook Bible is to have a unique resource for communicating the gospel to children in all it's fullness. Ever since my daughter was born I have been keeping my eye out for a children's bible that would help me introduce the stories of the bible to her in a way that she would understand. And this fits that bill perfectly! So many of the versions out there are just the regular bible verses with colorful kids pictures incorporated. While that is all fine and good when they are a bit older... try keeping the attention of a toddler when you try to read them an excerpt! The stories are told in a format that reads like her other storybooks and it keeps her attention. Plus, the pictures are so colorful and beautiful! I plan on giving this to many friends for their little ones to enjoy as well :)

I'm a pastor, and (currently) the father of two, a 2.5 year old boy and a 7 month old girl. I've been excited to introduce my children to the Bible, but totally overwhelmed with finding a Bible that would faithfully communicate the Scriptures at a level that made sense young children. I've tried three or four toddler Bibles, but they ranged from the meaningless and banal (Read With Me Bible For Toddlers) to the downright horrifying in their interpretation (The Story For Little Ones). Let me give you a couple of examples to demonstrate what I mean. The Jesus Storybook Bible, on the other hand, seeks to show how God's plan of salvation is unfolding through each story, and largely succeeds in doing so. Let me try and demonstrate what I mean.First of all, there are children's Bibles like the Read With Me Bible that are simply bland. Granted, toddlers are not going to pick up on every nuance of a story from the Bible, but the Read With Me Bible often chooses the wrong points to emphasize, entirely leaving out important points of narrative along the way. One story simply lists miracles Jesus did with no context, failing to communicate that Jesus' miracles actually anticipate and begin to realize a new world, a world where God's Kingdom and rule are breaking into the world in a new and exciting way. Now, children obviously won't grasp the entirety of this message (indeed, even the most mature Christian is still growing in their understanding) but Jesus is more than a magician, he is more than simply amazingly powerful, so why drain the miracle stories of their power? If salt loses its saltiness, what is it good for?Next, there are children's Bibles that don't simply drain the Scriptures of their power, but that actually wrongly interpret the Scriptures in horrifying ways. Two examples from The Story For Little Ones. The story of Samson says that Samson did everything God wanted him to do. This simply displays a level of ignorance about the story of Samson that is beyond belief for someone writing (interpreting) a Bible for children! Samson disobeys God at every turn, and the end of his story is that of a man so consumed by hate and revenge (and who does revenge belong to, by the way?) that he is willing to kill himself to destroy HIS (not God's!) enemies! The point is that the best God has to work with to rescue Israel is someone as corrupt as Samson, yet God is able to use even Samson to rescue His undeserving people! Consider also the end of the Bible, the book of Revelation. In The Story For Little Ones, the end of Scripture is that Jesus will return and take us away from this world and we'll live with him forever. This is exactly what Revelation does not say. Now, I'm not a dispensationalist, nor do I believe in a rapture, but that isn't the doctrine I'm criticizing here. So, for example, the story of the Exodus is told not as the story of God's great magic show, but instead on the great, mighty, and terrifying rescue of God's people from their slavery, pointing forward also to humanity's slavery to sin and coming rescue in Jesus. That is why the subtitle to this Bible is "Every Story Whispers His Name." Every story anticipates the coming of Jesus and the great rescue he brings to those who put their faith in him. This is a great Reformed concept, and a great Reformed work for children (I am an evangelical Presbyterian, by the way).Now is this Bible perfect? No, and no translation is, much less a paraphrase. Other have commented on some of the shortcomings of this Bible. Sometimes the language and tone is a bit casual, although casual doesn't necessarily mean disrespectful. Every story doesn't say as much as it could, although this is a strength rather than a weakness for a paraphrase (See: The Message). Not all of the theology expressed in the paraphrase matches perfectly with my own, but I see that as a teaching opportunity rather than a fatal flaw, not to mention that I think children should know early on that there are many ideas in the world, and not all of them are equally valid, and certainly not all of them are true. But again, the strength of this Bible is that it gets the story right, interpreting the main idea correctly and always pointing toward Jesus.

I bought this upon the recommendation of friends. I was told it connected everything to the new covenant in Christ, and that was exactly what I wanted for my daughter as she gets older. When I received it, however, I was greatly disappointed to find lots of extra information added that's nowhere in the real Bible. For example:"God saw all that he had made and he loved them. And they were lovely because he loved the. But God saved the best for last. From the beginning, God had a shining dream in his heart. He would make people to share his Forever Happiness. They would be his children, and the world would be their perfect home. So God breathed life into Adam and Eve. When they opened their eyes, the first thing they ever saw was God's face. And when God saw them he was like a new dad. "You look like me," he said. "You're the most beautiful thing I've ever made!""And"Just trust me,' the serpent whispered. 'You don't need God. One smal taste, that's all, and you'll be happier than you could ever dream...' Eve picked up the fruit and ate some. And Adam ate some, too. And a terrible lie came into the world. It would never leave. It would live on in every human heart, whispering to everyone one of God's children: 'God doesn't love me.'"It gets better later on in the book, but there's just too much added in the way of emotions, particularly on God's part, for me to feel comfortable. And I understand what the author was trying to do. She was trying to make the Bible personal to children with an angle that points toward Christ, a desire I applaud. But that doesn't mean we can twist the Bible to say things it doesn't say. I'll be sending it back and buying something that's a little less creative.

I grew up in NY and remember all of the wall signs. This book is so interesting and well put together. Kudos to Mr. Passikoff!

This is the most phenomenal book about New York City! Ever!

Great book! Bought it as a gift for my hubby and he loved it!

There are signs of the past all around us if we would only notice and appreciate them, and The Writing On The Wall" beautifully illustrates this comforting truth. This book explores the many "ghost signs" painted right on buildings that advertised products and services throughout the neighborhoods of New York. Although most of these 19th and 20th century forms of advertisement are in fading condition due to time and the elements, Passikoff has managed to capture them for posterity, providing a curious history of the Big Apple's economic and social development. This book offers a wonderful tour of often forgotten art forms in New York City, many of which are at lest 90 or 100 years old!

....in crucial information! Would it have been difficult to tell us exactly WHERE these signs are located? I live in NYC and also adore these signs. There were many in the book I had yet to come across, and would have liked to see for myself...if the author had only seen fit to tell s where they are.

As you may read before in other books from the same author, this book has a similar structure on which you can find easy and intermediate recipes, chicken recipes actually. I love getting new recipes for chicken to try because even though you think you've tried it all, even just some small differences to a recipe you thought you knew can make all the difference. Also, because chicken is so versatile, I could eat it several times a week at least and not get tired of it.

About the Author

R. Peter Mooz, PhD, has taught at the universities of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Vermont, Texas, Virginia, and Mary Washington, and Virginia Commonwealth University. He served as director at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art and trustee of the Ogonquit Museum of Art, the Maine Consortium of Museums, and the Brunswick Historical Society. He went on to become director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, securing the acquisition of Paul Mellon's Equestrian Collection and seventy impressionist works by van Gogh, Degas, Monet, and others, as well as Sydney and Francis Lewis's famous collection of pop art, minimalist art, and postmodern works heralded by Time Magazine as one of the 100 best collections in the United States. Dr. Mooz served on the boards of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts, was a founding trustee of the Institute of Museum Services, and was appointed commissioner of the American Association of Museums' National Accreditation Program. Dr. Mooz has contributed to two other books, American Painting to 1776: A Reappraisal and The Genius of American Painting. While focusing on the life of a relatively obscure individual, this book reveals many details about daily life in the new colony that are not seen elsewhere. Although the subject apparently left no progeny, descendants of early Albany residents will find their ancestors mentioned repeatedly here. The used price is a great value, highly recommended for the family historian.

Donna Merwick's "Death of a Notary" is history/biography of the one person who committed suicide in Albany, NY during the 1600's. Adriaen Janse van Ilpendam was a man who lost his identity as a respected officer of the court when the English conquered the Dutch colony of New York. He was without a country and a language of communications. It was the ending of a writing career, hence an ending of life. New rules prevailed in the courts. "The humiliation of Janse and others as they experienced the loss of language competence and cultural fluency under English rule was real." p. 185. The first fatalities of any military conquest are the private citizens whose lives are destroyed.My early American ancestors were settlers of the original New York colony under their fedudal land development system. We have always been grateful for the exact records kept by the notaries that were so important to the members of the new colony; a part of the culture of their homeland which they brought the the new world. Yet one must admire the new government, which allowed those records to survive. The English couldn't read them, but they respected the evidence of the rule of law and the stability it engenders.Ms. Merwick's work is scholarly, yet readable. It opens a window to the everyday lives of our ancestors. The bibliography is extensive and detailed. She steers clear of revisionist history with her careful historical searches among the fodder for the nuisances of truth that paint a clearer picture of our past for our descendants.Nash Black, author of "Qualifying Laps" and "Sins of the Fathers."

As a history major, I've read and loved a lot of historical works, including "microhistories" like this one--and quite honestly, this is one of the most worst I've ever read. Its most glaring fault is its complete lack of organization; the reader is plunged into a story without any exposition and never really gains his footing. Characters were abruptly introduced and vanished just as suddenly, leaivng readers lost and confused. Her thesis remained vauge and elusive until the last page, making reading the entire book a chore: what was the meaning of all this, I couldn't help but wonder as I read.While the history of Dutch America is no doubt interesting, I couldn't even finish this book, and neither did any of my classmates: truly, the worst on our syllabus.

This is a wonderful book, not only for academics like myself but for anyone interested in understanding the effects of aging on memory, emotion, and interpersonal behavior (among other things). This book is incredibly well-written. It discuss cutting-edge research, including Castel’s own experimental psychological research that demonstrates the salutary effects of aging on meta-cognitive processes.I pre-ordered the book, which will be one of the few books I keep on my shelf and, right now, at my bedside. I especially loved Castel’s discussion of how he personally came to study aging.Also, an incredible recounting of the many interviews Castel did with “elderly Illuminati’s” like Bob Newhart and John Wooden (among others). Castel connects scientific research in aging to the Insights he has gleaned from these interviews.I can’t recommend this book enough.

In this era of mass information and misinformation, a book such as the one written by Professor Castel is refreshing. First and foremost, it is empirical, representing the best of what psychological science knows about differences in aging. Too often books are imbued with opinions, suppositions, etc. Rather, this book is built on a solid foundation that should make all readers confident and comfortable. Second, the book successfully balances both scientific perspectives with well-known examples of aging; this makes the book incredibly well-balanced and accessible. Finally, aging is arguably one of the most important challenges and opportunities of the human condition -- all of us will experience it and all of us are motivated to do it as gracefully as possible. I recommend this book highly as I have no doubt you'll find it rewarding and inspiring.

Better with Age is an insightful mix of anecdotes, common beliefs and scientific case studies of what we can do to better enjoy the aging process. One does not have to be "old" to benefit from the examples in this book. Different ways people learn to use memory (selective memory, prospective memory) more efficiently as we age are highlighted. A fun read for those who don't think about how aging affects our perspective on life.

An excellent resource on the effects of aging on cognition paired with tremendous insights on how to age successfully. Cutting-edge research is presented in an accessible manner and paired with a number of practical suggestions from notable figures from a number of fields. I would recommend this to anyone!

Dr. Castel puts the science and the myths on aging into a readable and reassuring perspective, giving us who are indeed the test case for all if these studies, verifiable evidence for how to proceed through the stage of a vigorous older adulthood. . This book both helped me feel that I was indeed doing what is needed, and dispelled some of the alternative factoids invading our internet searches these days. Thank you for this book.

I just finished Professor Alan Castel’s book, “Better with Age, The Psychology of Successful Aging.” As an individual who exceeds 70 years of age, I thought his work was thorough, insightful and very meaningful. Mr. Castel described the challenges and opportunities of the aging process in a thorough, complete manner. Kenneth Fraser really knew how to do an excellent job explaining Robotics. My children are very fascinated with robots and just building things and knowing how they work. This book has helped me get closer to my children by us learning how to build a robot together. It explains in easy instructions what you need to do and how you need to do it. This book is very easy to read and follow. I love how it tells the history of robots also. It s so informative my children did not want to put it down. It teaches them not only how to make robots but also the good and bad about robots. I received this book at a discount for an honest review.

Very disappointing - I found grammatical errors from the very beginning. It looks like it was either written in another language and poorly translated or never edited in the first place. There are much better introductions to the subject of robotics available here at Amazon and available for the Kindle. Even for the very low price - I wish I could get my money back.

Informative good for bathroom reading.It helps the curious but not the professional. Not a must have, but a could have.

It gives a good general overview of what makes a robot. A good place to start if you are thinking of this as a new hobby.

Poorly written but informative. Introduces the components required and briefly how they work. Search Wikipedia for examples of the components described.

Gives you a basics conceptual background in robotics but doesn't give you any detailed descriptions on how to build a robot.

Good if you like grammatical errors and grand generalizations. Was this ever proof read and can I get a refund?? There is no real information in this "book".

This book has not been edited due to its many grammar mistakes. It doesn't go into any type of detail and is not useful to me at all. Look for another book you cheapo's
