I so wish I'd thought to look for this before I began my first bust. It would have saved me a whole lot of time, and increased the chance that the finished piece will dry evenly enough to remain free of cracks before it goes into the kiln. Fingers crossed! Because I tend towards realism (and being a born perfectionist) it took a lot of time to work and re-work the face until it became real enough, and with the subtle smile that I was hoping to achieve. This book has excellent photos of not only the work in clay but also of models who offer a good range of expressions for every mood. It's also full of inspiring pieces from a range of different artists. The techniques are clearly laid out, step by step, and shown in good detail. The only thing that could have improved this for me would be to see some details of neck and shoulders. My figure is of a woman with her eyes half closed, face tilted upwards and slightly to the side. As is almost always the case, the neck and shoulders are the base of a bust, and I was hoping to see some examples of protrusions of the spinal cord, and the scapulas to help to perfect my piece. It's very hard to find photos that help with something like this.Overall though, I highly recommend this book. Love it!

Very detailed book demonstrating different methods (slab, coil, and solid) for completing a human bust in clay. Includes many examples to convey various ages, emotions, and expressions of the human face. Gives instruction for proper placement and proportions of ears, eyes, nose, etc. Confident that this book provides a very good foundation to begin sculpting well developed heads and expressive faces in clay.

Wonderful book! On my very first attempt it helped me sculpt a very nice head!

This book is a waste of money, it’s weak and has mediocre information at best, i give it three stars because I feel generous. I should have returned it, tho. And you shouldn’t buy it. There are MUCH better books on the subject. Faraut’s books are more expensive but you will actually learn the real knowledge. Your money will be well spent. This book is a false economy because you spend less money and get virtually nothing for it.

This is a very simplified way to show how to sculpt, it's what I needed and not overly worded. Gets to the point.

I don't know. The designs in this book were a bit creepy and weird for me. Maybe someone else will like it better. I have other books that I'm happy with.

I think this book is excellent and provides clear, detailed instructions for slab building a head and face to create a unique, expressive work. It addresses form, anatomy, solid basic construction methods and surface treatments. Many of the modeling techniques overlap to building on an armature, but this book addresses only the slab construction method, which I think is much more accessible for beginners. Could a beginner take this book and work with it without a teacher? In many cases, I think so, especially if you have a background in art and/or learn well from books. Some experience handling clay would be helpful, and if you don't want to dive in without a teacher, a basic hand building course should prepare you for the projects in this book. This book is so well done! Highest praise to the author.

This is a wonderful book! It's very descriptive and easy to understand. There are step by step pictures and they have drawn diagrams of the human head so you can better understand how to sculpt them.

#8,296 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I downloaded this book as an audio file so I could listen while doing other things. I'm a 70-year-old physically disabled female, living alone with a cat (of course) and many would probably think I wouldn't like this book at all. It's a story about a recently-retired Marine, 38, divorced, and at loose ends. Until he goes to visit a dear friend in Marathon FL and decides to buy a boat and become a fishing/underwater photography guide. This is the prequel to Stinnett's "Fallen" series and apparently tells his readers the back stories of the main characters in those books. I haven't read the series yet but I certainly intend to! This is a good story, well-presented, feels authentic. There is some violence with an obvious hero; there is some sex but it's mostly implied with a wink and pulled curtains. The characters feel like real humans who do good things. And stupid things. And bad things. The narration on the audio file is clear and very well done. The male narrator even manages to imply a female voice without sounding patronizing or just plain dumb.Overall I've given this book 4 stars. I have no complaints about anything in or about the book, but I don't usually give 5 stars unless a book knocks my socks off (and I almost never wear socks).

I want to like this book, but it just didn't move. There is a chapter midway that gets rolling with the "action plot" of the book, and then at the 80% mark (I read on Kindle, so I know the precise spot) it picks up on that storyline again. The bad guy gets chased down then, and is taken out in a matter of two paragraphs. Very disappointing. Most of the book is Jesse McDermitt getting out of the Marines and adjusting to a new life. There is far more in the love-interest story than the action story, which are kept very separate. It's like reading two different books--no wait, three different books--woven around each other: the action story, the love story, and the I'm-out-of-the-service-now story. That third one doesn't do anything, and comprises at least half the book... it just traces through him buying a boat, interacting with folks, and drinking coffee on the bridge of his boat. Yes, I will try the next one, just in hopes it does better. It may well be that Book 1 was handled poorly in trying to establish the main character... so I'll give #2 a try and see if it does better. If not, I'm done with the series, and will be wagging my head at why so many people have given it 4 and 5 stars..... that's the real mystery.

This novel is the first in Jesse's timeline, but apparently the third or fourth book written in the series. And prequel it most certainly is, filling in the hero's back story. It also reflects the cover image of someone kicking back in a hammock. Stinnett, it seems, kicked back here and wrote a pretty lazy, laid-back yarn. It's just a series of events that takes Jesse from the Marines to Key West. If you're an ex-Leatherneck or a fan, you'll probably enjoy the plethora of Marine lore and experience. I'm not and I didn't. If you're into the toys Jesse's into—like half million dollar boats and guns and other gear—you'll enjoy all the discussion of them. I'm not and I didn't. If you're into fishing and diving... Well, you get the idea. Anyway, all of that bores me silly. I flipped through a lot of the over-information. True, there's one nasty antagonist for Jesse who appears three times. But Jesse dispatches the guy so easily each time, it's just a yawn. At no point is Jesse in trouble. What I'm saying is there's no plot to speak of, no suspense, no fun in reading it. Very little of the qualities I look for in books like this. Stinnett is clearly a capable writer and the success of this series hints that there's better material in his other books. So I think it's a mistake to offer this title as a low-priced entry point, even though it's the first in the timeline. It doesn't make a good pitch for getting into the series. This book is for folks who've already read some of the other Jesse adventures and want to learn more about the guy.

This book is not one I would normally read. But since the setting was the Florida keys I was interested, especially since I lived in Marathon for years. The book was worth the read since I learned a lot about guns and Marine slang. The storyline, a retired bad ass Marine turned charter captain, seemed to take second place to his ability to cope with no longer being on active duty. I was disappointed that the author was not more descriptive of the scenery, emotions of the characters and all the action scenes. My thoughts as I was reading one of the many action scenes was that the book reminded me of the old TV show, Dragnet, "just the facts mam, just the facts." The Florida keys are rich in history, beautiful turquoise water and full of unbelievably colorful characters. I wish the author had not been so stingy with his words. The story would not have kept my interest had I not actually lived where Jessie McDermott lived during the same time and could visually picture the events and surroundings. I'm hoping that Mr.Stinnet will get better as he continues with the series.IiInc

The story was good and the editing flawless. Yet there was a distinct lack of energy or life emanating from the words. It was told first person in a very dry manner. Too much was left for the reader’s imagination. In short, it was lacking hutzpah, no real excitement aside from the story itself. A painting that isn’t finished. A sound foundation of a story but lacking color and energy. I couldn’t help but feel the author was just going through the motions of relaying a tale in much the same way many kids do in school when given a writing assignment. It’s a good story, but a few embellishments would have added tremendous value to the reading experience. I wanted to feel the protagonist’s pain and anxiety when he left the Marine Corp; I didn’t. I wanted to feel the joy and triumph he felt when he won over the girl; I didn’t. And I especially wanted to feel his rejection when he was turned down at the end of the book, a poignant moment that many readers might relate to; I didn’t. In fact, I didn’t feel much of anything throughout the entire story. I gave it 4 stars for the story, not the lackluster reading experience.

DMT Dialogues: Encounters with the Spirit Molecule

Review

“DMT Dialogues is a courageous attempt in the best tradition of the scientific process to wrestle with the meaning of anomalous DMT experiences, reported by a substantial number of people, involving the sense of being in touch with alien intelligences. Like all great mysteries, there is no single interpretation that everybody who participated in the DMT Dialogues arrived at by consensus. Reading DMT Dialogues will not bring you certainty but rather will bring you in direct contact with profound minds struggling to plumb the depths of consciousness.” (Rick Doblin, Ph.D., executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies)“These dialogues are a promising and positive attempt to create a pivotal shift in consciousness. Centered on the farthest reaches of human experience, they offer fresh perspectives and open new doors. They merit being read--and read over and over again, in our own as well as in humankind’s most general interest.” (Ervin Laszlo,The Intelligence of the Cosmos)“DMT Dialogues represents an important step in the scholarly conversation about the DMT world and the entities which inhabit it. By presenting insightful contributions from experts in psychology, anthropology, religious studies, and neuroscience, as well as the interdisciplinary discussions that followed, the editors have provided the theoretical tools needed to start interpreting and understanding the DMT experience. As part of the Beckley/Imperial Research Programme we are currently investigating how DMT has its effect in the brain in a pioneering study using EEG and fMRI.” (Amanda Feilding, founder of The Beckley Foundation)“DMT is famous in the world of psychedelic research for inducing experiences that are short, a matter of minutes, but with effects that are profoundly dazzling and lead to lengthy essays that try to explicate the puzzle. It clearly affects the language centers of the brain! It has led to the recognition of DMT entities, which may or may not be a new class of weird beings, neither animal nor plant, molecular nor metaphysical. This book is a fascinating series of explorations of the paradigm-busting and mind-blowing experiences triggered by this substance. Just reading about them is mind-blowing!” (Ralph Metzner, Ph.D., author of Searching for the Philosophers’ Stone)“Preserved in the pages of this book are some of the most extraordinary presentations I have ever had the pleasure to read. It was my privilege to attend the 2017 Tyringham Initiative DMT Symposium and to learn firsthand from the assembled scientists and scholars about their research into DMT. This substance opens doors into a hidden world, and to listen to--and read--these presentations is to discover that powerful advances are being made into understanding its meaning and potential.” (Whitley Strieber, author of Communion and The Super Natural)“DMT Dialogues showcases the incredible, groundbreaking work of the Tyringham Initiative, which convenes cutting-edge thinkers and scientists exploring the edge-realms of the psyche, with the intention of furthering humanity’s understanding of what lies beyond the edge of the known.” (Daniel Pinchbeck, author of Breaking Open the Head)“DMT has a rich cultural history, a radically vibrant contemporary social context, complex biological mechanisms, theological and philosophical implications, and far-reaching implications for the science of consciousness. In DMT Dialogues, David Luke and Rory Spowers have curated an accessible anthology that sparks off in many of these directions and then kindles them together into a Promethean fire for our times. Where do we go as a species with all this rising knowledge of the extraordinary farther reaches of the mind? Only time will tell, and I’m sure this book will help us find the way.” (Oliver Robinson, Ph.D., author of Paths between Head and Heart)

Man, I wish I had been able to attend in person the gathering that gave rise to this book. Instead I was visiting and participating in San Pedro ceremonies at Chavin in central Peru which inspired me to write my book 'Long Road to Chavin' (Amazon 2018). Short of actually attending the gathering it is gratifying to be able to read this account of talks and dialogues between some of the world's leading researchers in the field of plant spirit medicine. I enjoyed every chapter and recommend this work to all interested in questions of ultimate reality, disincarnate spiritual beings, shamanism and natural healing.Really fascinating reading!Martin StevensTarapoto, Peru

full of novel information

In pineal pop culture, when deciding whether the so called discarnate entities one encounters in the DMT space are terrestrial or extra-terrestrial in origination and form, like a confused college freshman, one can go both ways.In the book DMT Dialogues: Encounters with the Spirit Molecule, Dr. David Luke and Mr. Rory Spowers have entertainingly edited together an informative sutra of modern science meets mysterium tremendum.Moderating deep DMT round table discussions, these authors play Arthur to psychedelic knights who relegate adventurous tales of research and experience, sharing a seized treasure trove of theoretical, empirical, personal, anecdotal and cultural evidence. And frankly, any book that begins with a contributor’s visionary recollection of a leathery red mean spirited demon spouting a four part mean analogy, as colorful as a devilish Day-Glo Coop poster print, it draws me in to explore more. Get the book. Trust me.Sprung from a 2014 gathering in the UK of like minded researchers and explorers, the Entheogenic Plant Sentience Symposium was a conference I wish I’d attended. Now thanks to Luke and Sprowers, we can all bend space time and join the party via the written pages. The publication features a lengthy list of luminaries including Dr Rick Strassman, the researcher behind the popular film DMT: The Spirit Molecule, culture hawk Erik Davis, chemist Dennis McKenna, the great Graham Hancock, Amazonian anthropology expert Jeremy Narby, the renowned Rupert Sheldrake and many more.Plant teachers have been with us for eons. Biblically speaking, Mose’s burning bush showed that while undergoing chemical change, a plant can produce an atmosphere in which communication and teaching can transmit. Perhaps this shrub of destiny was a cousin of Acacia nilotica, the foliage Graham Hancock refers Dennis McKenna to as a contender for The Egyptian Tree of Life in an early chapter.McKenna talks about the visualization and innovation tool the chemical dimethyltryptamine is, describing a common theme “the messenger molecule” shares; intel that includes innovative information in select categories, including structure, architecture and engineering. I’m reminded immediately of the stories about Francis Crick discovering the Double helix structure of DNA thanks to his use the visionary compound LSD.Furthering the framework of DMT with cultural context, Jeremy Narby shared a story about the Ashaninka tribe and their relationship to“maninkari”, a word in their language referring “those who are hidden”. Going further, Narby says that these hidden ones, revealed through the use of tobacco or ayahuasca (DMT being the elixir’s driving ingredient), are also called “Ashaninka” by the people, as the hidden are also a part of the tribe; Essentially, a part of their very selves.Questions of cultural appropriation often arise in these psychoactive discussions. Narby puts psychedelic entities in perspective with the rest of the panel, pointing out while people of the Amazon animism perspective seem to have a jungle hotline to plant entities of all sorts, the experience of “other” crosses invisible boundaries drawn on maps.Skillfully surfing the enchanted waters of outer and inner space, Erik Davis serves up the chemical’s questions in a cup of modern integration, examining its place in the world, whether Western or Eastern in ontology. For the initiate, Davis’ take on the realms of religion, ritual and rite are more than rational observations. Erik is not afraid of the edge and believes Science should share his proximity to the abyss. In a resulting discussion post Erik’s presentation, Davis and McKenna swap stories about the Invisible Landscape and Dennis’ brother Terence McKenna. It was in fact Terence who entranced this author, via voice mixed with EDM. I first heard TMK on an electronica album being played at a party in the early 90s. His unusual timbre and vocal rhythm drew me close to the stereo, speaking about a schedule one substance humans possess, sampled into a song. Interesting that beyond the space and time, the molecule also communicates thru song at 144bpm.This book continues with biologist Rupert Sheldrake sharing his ideas on systems, organization and morphic resonance, reminding us the East remembers more than the West. He reviews molecular mechanisms of DMT, as well as compounds both shamanically born and those midwifed in the lab, recounting a conversation at Esalen with the famed Alexander “Sasha” Shulgin (godfather of MDMA and hundreds of other psychoactive compounds). David Luke’s follow up discussion mentions Dr. Albert Hofmann’s ( discoverer of LSD ) anecdote about folks dosing with certain alkaloids. Unaware of the cultural implications, they unknowingly had similar visionary experiences correlating to the relative cultures. This confirms both McKenna and Narby’s statements on similarities across cultural boundaries.Graham Hancock presents next. Hancock, like Sheldrake is a victim of TED talk blackballing, the ban born of their respective viewpoints on nonlocal consciousness, which TED reduces to pseudoscience. He regales a tale of trippy proportions, and takes us the on a journey through mythology and mysticism, and expertly weaves the threads of commonality like a psychedelic Joseph Campbell. The domains of UFOs, faeries and the fantastic rival those Terence McKenna, whose spirit is once again raised by this speaker. I’m synchronistically delighted when his conversation then turns to the Francis Crick DNA story mentioned earlier in this piece. While all the presentations from the symposium are well organized and on point, even more entertaining and enlightening are conversations between these beautiful minds, post lecture. The opportunity for these folks to foster discussion with each other bears value for us readers, who have entrained many of these thoughts. Are you one who wonders about DMT and its effects?Do Terence’s machine elves exist? Have these entities been guiding us from the get go? Are they E.T.s with the D.T.s, dosing on our hosting spiritual vibe and taking a metaphysical ride? Are we the droids we’re looking for? This book may just blow your mind with a new theory or two. Or maybe an old one that missed your space time coordinates. In the book, Dennis McKenna says“True science should be about the search for truth, a way to uncover true knowledge about the world.”I don’t know if McKenna is a fan of the X files-I’m arguably more Mulder than Scully. While this book leaves me pondering, I do know one thing. The truth is out there.

This is a wonderful book that can change anyone's life with its simple wisdom. It does go over The Four Agreements, but it isn't repetitive. Instead, it adds depth to the first four and adds an additional agreement which works well with the rest. This is a book for people who want to have a peaceful, happy, loving life. The profoundness of it is in its simplicity. It is not religious, nor do you have to do anything special except to look at people, experiences and circumstances with a different perspective. Not only is it life changing, but if everyone read this book and tried a little each day to practice the agreements, it would be world changing.

Like so many others, I got a lot of valuable guidance from The Four Agreements. But it all comes home in this book by don Jose Ruiz. This is the goal. This is the understanding of the goal. This is the understanding of the barriers to the goal. If this book doesn't inspire and give you the understanding to get your shovel and clear the pile of debris hiding your real, shining and pure identity, I've no idea what would! If you never read The Four Agreements, they are discussed, each in its own chapter in The Fifth Agreement - and with a depth and clarity that goes beyond the author's fathers original work that so many of us treasure. If you are buying just one book on personal/spiritual development, this is the book to get.

Reading this book put a finishing touch into appreciating and understanding better the message of The First Four Agreements. It is abeautiful Practical Guide to Living. Some months ago I read The Four Agreements and listened also to it read by Peter Cayote's excellent rendition of it. The CD, in my opinion, brings the message of the book to life. Being impeccable with one's word, not making assumptions, not taking things personally and doing the best one can (the four agreements) become clearer as one works to understand the Fifth Agreement of having an open mind ( being positive in your critical observations) combined with the art of listening to others. I love the message of this book and it is one that I will reread since it has a depth of information that I couldn't master in one reading.

I liked it. It really takes the four agreements to the next level. They do go over the first four agreements. I would almost recommend just starting with this book, but the book for the original four reads rather quickly. This has really helped me understand that life it what you make it. You can't control everything, but you can control how you react to it. Never stop learning and growing.

This book is easy to read and as titled, very practical. I have read many books on this subject and for me this is the one I would recommend first. I felt no bias of religion, nationality, race, gender, age, intellect, etc in the message only respect and sincerity. It has given me a method to change my world for the better and I am confident that others will benefit from this book too.

If I had not met Don Jose Ruiz himself to hear what he had to say, I would have been skeptical about the Agreements. It's easy for authors to write what they research rather than what they stand for. Don Jose had been a series of different kinds of fire for me: a brilliant light, a warming flame, a blast of renewal, a force for rekindling. I would encourage readers not just to look at the words but immerse themselves into the mediation of their meanings. It will elevate your thinking.

This book not only added a fifth agreement but expanded greatly on the first four. The fifth agreement is something I practiced for many years but kept judging myself as being weak because of it. I'm excited to put it back into practice but with more skepticism and more kindness toward myself. I'm very grateful for this book.

At first it seemed Ruiz was going to repeat the four agreements into greater detail, but as i kept reading, the book turned for the best. This book is a MUST READ after the four agreements. If you thought the four agreements was AT THE LEAST a decent book, you have to read the fifth agreement. I believe everybody will benefit from this book. Share it with everybody you know because this book is as real as it gets. Its the truth ;) (once you read the book, you'll understand what the "truth" really means)

I liked the format and layout of the book/passages. I would recommend this book to someone battling some type of pressure, whether it be because of daily life struggles or trying to get over the past, I chose this rating because if I'm going to help change the world, more people should start here

Review

“A delicious and very funny what-if.... a delightful little book that unfolds into a witty meditation on the subversive pleasures of reading.... Mr. Bennett has written a captivating fairy tale ... a tale that showcases its author's customary élan and keen but humane wit.” ―Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times“Bennett's jokes are so beautifully modulated.... The Uncommon Reader is a piece of audacious lèse majesté which, in an earlier age, would have put its author's head on a spike.... Bennett knows what he is doing.” ―The Guardian“A kind of palace fairy tale for grown-ups.... [[Bennett's]] account of the queen's adventures often made me laugh out loud.” ―Jeremy McCarter, The New York Times“Briskly original and subversively funny.” ―Publishers Weekly“[Bennett's] subtle wit and tonal command show why he is so beloved in his native Britain.” ―Kirkus Reviews“Alan Bennett is one of the greatest comic writers alive, and The Uncommon Reader is Bennett at his best--touching, thoughtful, hilarious, and exquisite in its observations.” ―Helen Fielding, author of Bridget Jones's Diary“Hilarious and stunning . . . The conceit offered here by Mr. Bennett, the beloved British author and dramatist, is that a woman of power can find and love the power in books. It is a simple equation and one that yields deep rewards. In what is a surprising and surprisingly touching novella, Mr. Bennett shows us why books matter to the queen, his "uncommon reader" and why they matter so much to the rest of us.” ―Carol Herman, The Washington Times“Hilarious and pointed . . . The Uncommon Reader is a political and literary satire. But it's also a lovely lesson in the redemptive and subversive power of reading and how one book can lead to another and another and another. . . . But most of all, The Uncommon Reader is a lot of fun to read.” ―Bob Minzesheimer, USA Today“One of the most subtly ingratiating prose stylists of our time . . . charming enough and wise enough that you will certainly want to keep it around for rereading--unless you decided to share it with friends.” ―Michael Dirda, The Washington Post“Clever and entertaining . . . The Uncommon Reader is a celebration of both reading and its counterpart, independent thinking.” ―Maud Newton, Los Angeles Times

Here’s a fun little novella. The Queen. Yes, that one. Who lives in Buckingham Palace. She is out with her corgis and comes upon a bookmobile. Curious, she wanders around. A gentleman who works in the palace kitchen is there and quite well read, offers some suggestions as HRH isn’t sure what will be to her liking. Well, no sooner is he promoted to another position.Reading becomes quite the habit for the Queen. Much to the dismay of her staff, she has lost complete interest in pretty much everything else. Her newfound love has taken over and every chance she gets, whether in a car, away at Balmoral, or wishing she could skip another appearance, she is nose-deep in a book. It’s interesting to imagine whether the Queen really does have time to read at her leisure or if she only has time for books that pertain to work at hand. Hard to picture the vast collection at the Royal Library simply collecting dust.

I was surprised and charmed by Alan Bennett's THE UNCOMMON READER, so much so that I have read it several times and have recommended it to many friends, especially those who love British writers.I know that in the UK, this book is regarded as an anti-monarchist satire, and perhaps that is exactly how Mr. Bennett indeed intended it. However, whether or not he meant for it to happen, I couldn't help feeling that the author has a secret fondness for his main character, who is the Queen herself. She comes off as far more sympathetic than not, and the reader will be irresistibly drawn into HM's private life. Mr, Bennett's fly-on-the-wall observations are hilarious and poignant. This is a wonderful story, economically told, and I was sorry to reach the last page because I could have gone on reading it for ages. Don't miss THE UNCOMMON READER; it is a keeper.

This is a marvelous little story. The reader in question is definitely not common and somehow the story seems believable. It was a joy to read. When it arrived I opened the package, sat down and read it straight thru. First time I have ever done that. It was so amusing I couldn't put it down. Definitely recommend it.

HMQ Elizabeth II discovers independence and liberty in reading, from the most unlikely of sources- 'the Library,' whose demise, I hope, is greatly exaggerated.Subtle, enjoyable- an inspiration for those who have forgotten "how" to read. For those who found this 'boring,' 'dull' or 'predictable,' - may I suggest you re-read this novella slowly-- and I mean very slowly-- we all read far too quickly these days. The careful, meticulous development that Bennett lends his characters (Sir Kevin of New Zealand, especially) is a refreshly light break from the gumph that proliferates our shelves/your "e-books."If you feel jaded by literature- this will animate your imagination, I hope.

Are you ever at a cocktail party where people are talking about sports or celebrities or TV shows when you just wanted to burst out, "Read, people. If you read, your world gets bigger and much more interesting!" I haven't, But Alan Bennett assuredly has.The Queen, nearly 80, more or less accidentally checks out a book from a mobile library, and checks out (as is, removes from the premises) a young reader named Norman at the the same time. Norman, generally unimpressed by monarchy, becomes her guide to reading things she never read before. To her amazement, and the alarm of her Staff, she loves it. It changes her.OK, that's the plot. This is a delightful, very brief, very funny argument in favor of reading. As you are unlikely to be reading this review if you are not a reader, you should be hooked already. Bennett takes shots at the stuffy Staff, authors, shallow lives (exemplified by the poor Queen's responsibilities to preside over --but otherwise not participate in -- the openings of new factories, parks and, way back when, countries), bureaucratic decisions and any number of other light subjects. But he is serious in his support for the benefits of reading. This book is the justification for all the time we have 'wasted' consuming books and even occasionally thinking about what we read. I wanted to rise up, join the club and have an armband as I read it.This is, at best, a two or three hour book. It is so slim that the cost per word is sort of high. But it is so much fun, and so supportive of your addiction to books, that it is nearly disloyal to not read it.

Everyone who reads on a regular basis knows about the addictive features of such an adventure. As the author leads us to believe the Queen of England simply lacked the time for such things until one day while chasing down her disruptive and incorrigible Corgi's she encounters a young man in the book mobile. Norman as it turns out is employed in the Royal kitchens but is a bookophile. In the coming months he guides the Monarchial pursuit of all things written including his apparent penchant for gay authors. Even after Norman's untimely disappearance her Majesty begins to redefine her challenge to consume as many books as is literally possible. In doing so she finds herself ignoring or at least giving short shrift to her official duties which despite her love of all things regal has started to find them if not boring at least disruptive of her new found regime. The problem with excessive reading as any ignored spouse or best friend can tell you is that reading is a decidedly singular excursion with the annoying exception of the occasional "Listen to this..." followed by an extracontextual paragraph or so which the listener does not want to hear. The cure of course for reading to exclusion is to write. Will this be the remedy for the good Queen or will she resort to something more drastic? Her attendants and personal handlers conspire to find the solution but of course she takes the bull, as it were, by the horns and preempts them with her usual decisiveness on the burm of her 80th birthday. A lovely fast read. Alan Bennett is a cheeky Brit with a rather large repertoire to his credit including plays, essays, novels, reviews and the odd appearance on stage. 2.50 GIBO
