Quite a few people feel that Arnold Schoenberg never hit ground running with his own compositions. They seemed to be experimental, boring, tedious exercises in new forms of music, and old forms as well. But these people probably have never had the opportunity to read Schoenberg's writings on harmony and composition. He was a great teacher that deserves to be known for his theory and writings. The book is worth much more than its price.

Structural Functions of Harmony by A. Schoenberg was written to give advanced students of theory additional examples of analysis in order to round off their skills in the subject. He shows a controversial example about whether to write a sharp or flat in a descending melodic line. I found this invaluable and also his discussion of specific rules of composition. The material on sequences was tedious though with fabricated rules, which are not much adhered to by any composers of any merit. Frequently, I discovered questionable voice leading with wide skips and doublings(even leading tones) in the many chordal examples, especially taking great liberty preparing and resolving dominant 7ths.Some of the examples had week progressions and bad cross relations. I was surprised that he also allowed parallelisms and voice overlapping in certain situations. There are also mistakes in the text. Overall, some of the irregular resolutions were very interesting. His concept of regions has been replaced now by the theory of secondary dominants of W. Piston, whose 1st edition of harmony appeared in 1942. This book was printed while Schoenberg was still teaching at U of SC. Schoenberg struggled with what is customarily called change of mode presented in this chart on page 20 in the Norton edition. Unfortunately, the earlier book that he wrote Harmonielehre is only partly translated into English. That was written for beginning students and is the forerunner of Structural Functions. I recommend this book, however, for anyone who wants to improve their knowledge and skills in harmony. It quotes a wide range of vocal, chamber, symphonic and piano music from past periods that makes for difficulty study though. The emphasis is always on chromatic idioms.

I had this book years ago but through my moves across country, then over the Pacific, and back again, it was no longer part of my collection. Since it was a book, I would so often cite because of certain ideas contained in it, I decided to put it in easy reach once again. I think the concept of regions used by Schoenberg became a cornerstone of my ideas of harmony along with 18th figured bass theory and certain aspects of Schenker.

This book will be difficult for those without a deep knowledge of how western harmony works. I think the other reviewer hit the nail on the head with his "masterclass" comparison. 200 pages long, but I'm guessing (conservatively) that half of this book is musical examples. Slow reading and a piano or midi keyboard in front of you (or having a great "mind's ear") will help immensely. Good book if you're into music theory or are a composer looking to add some more tools to your shed.

A bit difficult to understand at times, being tersely written, but the example help, and are extremely well done (not surprising, given the caliber of the author). Still trying to make sense of it.

I purchased this originally in 1986 because Wynton Marsalis thought very.very highly of this book. An amazing and excellent addition to any jazz theory/harmony, classical theory/harmony or musical composition studies. This is my second copy - my first fell apart from use !!! Also Recommened : Rhythmic Training by Robert Starer.

This was the primary text in my first harmony class. Anyone who knows anything of the subject will realize what an extraordinary decision my instructor took in choosing this book. As an introduction to the study of harmony this book speaks with complete silence to the classical tradition, instead invoking an idiosyncratic reading of the nature and purposes of harmony. Nonetheless, years later I find myself returning to this text, impressed anew with Arnold Schoenberg's many insights.

I read This House of Sky not long after it was heralded as an award winning book by a Montana author. Then I reread it several times. I loved the story--all true. I loved the time period, a Montana of my parents' young adulthood, depicting the hard life just post-Depression, post-WWII. But most of all, I loved the lyrical language of Doig's straightforward presentation of the story of his life.He tells how his father approached his disapproving mother-in-law to help raise six-year-old Ivan after Ivan's mother succumbed to her life-long struggle with asthma. This most odd of couples worked together on ranches with scarce food or water for the stock, fought the weather in terrible plains blizzards, thunderstorms and droughts, drove sheep, ran a restaurant, did anything they could do to keep a roof over their heads. No matter what, family is all that ever really matters. Just roll up your sleeves and start over again. Good advice in any era, any run of hard times. Any family.This House of Sky is Doig's masterpiece. Though he has written several other good books of fiction, I doubt anything will ever match the drama and raw emotion of his own life. Read it. The author writes beautifully about the raw and hardscrabble lives of real people in early 20th century southwest Montana. This is a real American story that should remind us of the greatness of forgotten "little people" who continue to help build this country. Doig's writing is a joy in and of itself to read, and he tells his story in such a way that it touches the human soul without being maudlin. Those of us who live spoiled and privileged lives by comparison to those people, need to stop and ask ourselves if we would be up to doing anything near what they had to do in order to survive.

I read this wonderful autobiography after reading Doig's extraordinary novel The Last Bus to Wisdom. .I won't stop reading until I've read everything he wrote... each book appears to be an examination of a puzzle piece of a life lived in one of the last frontiers. Can't recommend highly enough!

This is the third copy I've purchased after reading it myself. It's a wonderfully written autobiographical tale of a family's life in harsh rural Montana, and a man's remembrances of how the land shaped their existence and how the lives of three generations interacted and struggled together to overcome the obstacles life put in front of them.

Powerful, passionate and genuine...Ivan Doig has always been a great storyteller and his memoir is no exception.Motherless at the age of six, Ivan’s upbringing was a checkerboard of existence. His father worked various Montana ranches to preserve the continuity with his son. Most of these ranches were inaccessible in winter, so to secure Ivan’s schooling he would stay with whoever was obliging in the nearest town, or with his maternal grandmother in some ramshackle of a country house if the situation presented itself...seeing his father only on weekends when weather permitted and during the summer months. This father/son relationship was absolute.It is oftentimes said that landscapes can shape the human fabric and spirit...these Montana prairies, mountains and valleys did just that for Doig, his father, grandmother and everyone else in these environs.Sadly, Doig passed on in 2015...but his books will live on.A compelling read.

Most of us don't know much about real life in the American West. So, it took a while for this book to grow on me. First, being my hurried self, I wondered if I really wanted to read about the trying, demanding life of sheepherders in Montana. I was looking for excitement and insight into life or at least the land in the West. Then, as I kept reading, I found it. I realized that the life of Charlie Doig, his son, and his mother-in-law, held within it, the greatness, wisdom and love that only a few of us get to experience. And, although, I'm still not sure, I think that the greatness of the land around them somehow inspired them to be their best. They lived free of modern-day electronic gadgets, the race to make it to the top, and the ultimate disappointment and detachment that come from the worst cases of that kind of life. Instead, they were given the time to focus only on the next day and the world around them, including a few, manageable people they could understand and connect with in a meaningful way. There are surely lessons here for all of us and inspiration too.

I loved this book. This House of Sky is an elegantly written memoir about Ivan Doig's hardscrabble upbringing in rural Montana that often soars into sheer poetry. It's also a love letter to his father and grandmother, who transformed an uneasy alliance into a relationship of deep affection. If you enjoy fine literary craftsmanship, you'll find this a memorable read. It's the kind of book you won't want to put down yet won't want to finish. It's that good.

This is perfect for my journal/scrapbook that I keep... note the hard cover; however, you can tape many things inside without a problem. Also, the lines inside have a worn/aged/antique look (not sure what to call that)... some people are displeased with that look but I like it very much (and do believe it's done on purpose).

Nice heavy paper. My fountain pen does not bleed through.

This is a beautiful journal. The cover is so pretty with the pale writing behind the flowers. I love that each day has a bible quote. I bought it for a gratitude journal and love writing in it every night. The covers are strong and sturdy so you don't have to be at a desk. It's a perfect gift for someone you know who is struggling with stress or illness and could use a daily reminder to Be Still and know that your higher power is at work.

This is a beautiful journal! I'm so glad I ordered it! Totally worth every penny! I'm actually going to use it as a make-shift bridal shower guestbook since regular guestbooks are outrageously over-priced! :) I may order another to use as a personal journal!

The journal cover is floral and feminine. The words "Be Still" are from the Bible. The whole verse says "Be still and know that I am God." The verse teaches us to take a break from everything and focus on the biggest thing in life- GOD!

A good quality journal with lots of room for writing and journal keeping. I love the quotes/scriptures on each page. I almost wanted them to have different lines on each page, but they do repeat halfway through the journal.

This is a very pretty journal. The spiral binding lets the journal lay flat. The pages are smooth and easy to write on. I use ballpoint pens but have used a common fine-lined marker to show how the ink shows up. I held the page up to the light and you can see through with the light, but doesn't bleed through. If you use a marker on both sides, you might have an issue. I really like the scriptures on the bottoms of the pages. I hope you enjoy your new journal!

I really like this journal- hard cover, spot to write to and from if you've giving it as a gift, scripture on the bottom of every oage. My only complaint is when I first received it I thought the front cover corners were dirty but it is just the coloring. Elegant. Would make a nice gift for a loved one.

The content is great, but the book arrived in poor condition. Pgs 159-170 are unreadable, and are torn, glued, and taped with black tape (couldn’t at least use transparent?). I need this book for class and now I’m not gonna have access to a chunk of content. Please send me a new one; I’ll be happy to send the new one back when receiving the old one - I need to hold onto this so I can get my assignments done until the new one arrives. Please help me out guys, and I’ll change the review to 5 stars.

One of my favorite Shakespeare plays with an easy to read translation, yes please. I have a BA in English, so reading Shakespeare is easy for me, but this book was a gft. The recipient really enjoyed reading Shakespeare in plain English.

I am a big fan of Shakespeare whether it be a tragedy or a comedy. And this is one of the best comedies I've ever read. If you have ever seen the play or even just a movie of Twelfth Night you will like this. It is also a good way to introduce Shakespeare to your teenager or child.

I love, love, love this play!! This translation made Shakespeare so much more funny and enjoyable! Would recommend this to anyone, young or old, for leisure reading, studying, or just trying to get their foot in the door with Shakespeare. It is far less intimidating with the translation.

Yes, this is the play, but it's a print on demand, from digireads, who is taking advantage of no copyright on Shakspeare to churn out mediocre editions. So glad Amazon let me return it and get the Folger's edition which has actual authority on Shakespeare's plays.

This is Shakespeare! It's awesome!. It is one of his comedies, and it's so good. I highly recommend this. I bought it for a class I took on Shakespeare, and it was such a good introduction to his comedies. Written for the period around Christmas, hence the title Twelfth Night, (or What You Will). This version is a new edition by New Cambridge University Press, and it's lovely. This edition is edited by Elizabeth Story Donno, and its introduction is by Penny Gay. They both do a wonderful job. Buy it. You will not regret it.

My son was in the play for his high school, and this helped in giving him some direction as to what was really being implied. Most schools don't teach Shakespeare and the ones that still do seem to only hit on Romeo and Juliet but only lightly- then show the movie. Strongly suggest NO FEAR for any Shakespeare play your child might be studying (or performing).

One of Shakespeare's classics. I read it years ago & recently bought it to study for theatre. I found it an amusing, light-hearted book with endearing characters, written by one of the greatest poets & masters of language.
