Like most Europeans his family history was quite rich and complicated with intermarriage among faiths. With this in mind he was about, according to him, a fourth Jewish in blood. He was also a member of the aristocracy with a mother who held the rank of Baroness.As complicated as this sounds it’s important to the history of the book. As it turns out this man’s situation was not completely uncommon given the totality of the German war experience. There were others much like him who served the nation during a time of great distress. The Nazi system of government even had procedures to cover this type of situation.One of the more interesting aspects of this book concerns the use radio technology. The author was a radio enthusiast who built his own small scale radios in his youth. This skill allowed him a unique position within any unit as he could work with one of the more technical systems in the army. In his case he went to an infantry unit on the Eastern front. It must have been like no other place on earth or in history.The author does a wonderful job describing his experience on the Eastern front. At times he runs a radio and others he grabs his rifle and returns fire on advancing Russians. This is where the book really finds its stride. The first person account of the infantry war with Russia is fairly rare among history books.Interestingly enough, while he was on the Eastern front, the authors mother was playing a role in the resistance by hiding Jews within her own home. It is unclear how many lives she saved. But one thing is clear, t was deadly serious work. With one slip up the entire family could have been guilty of a major crime. She was a remarkably strong willed woman and it was interesting to learn something about her experiences in the war.I’ll leave the end of the book for the reader to enjoy. But the end is fairly typical of many of the experiences of German soldiers at the end of the war. The book does a great job of explaining the fall of German and conditions people endured. It shows the clear heavy lose the people suffered.For more information regarding the end of the war in Germany I would strongly suggest reading Fur Volk and Fuhrer by Erwin Bartman. I would also suggest reading the classic The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer for more first person accounts of the German experience in World War Two on the Eastern front.

Approximately 150,000 Jew soldiers served in Hitler's Wehrmacht in World War II. This is the story of one such soldier, Georg Rauch, from Austria. It is a very well written and moving story. Rauch served on the Eastern Front until he was captured. He served a number of years in Soviet prison camps and was fortunate to be amongst the first group of German soldiers released by the Red Army. Of the millions of Hitler's soldiers captured by the Russians, only a very small percentage survived to return to Germany. This book is highly recommended for those interested in the fate of German Jews in World War II, the Wehrmacht, and the Eastern Front.

This book provided a different perspective of the German soldiers in World War II. This book focused on a Jewish soldier but the perspective presented could have been any of the soldiers thrown into a cause that they probably didn't understand and a war they probably didn't agree with.

I enjoyed the perspective of this book. It was written from the viewpoint of a "normal" person who had to fight in a war in which he did not believe, in fact, he was against it. I would have loved to learn more about his mother's activities- while the author was consigned to Hitler's army, she was rescuing Jews. Love that.

An uplifting story about a Jewish Soldier in Hitler's Army? This was not what I expected. I felt that there would be a lot of sadness and self pity, but Rauch seems like he was a really positive man in his youth. I have bought this book for several people because I think that it is a good story about the horrors and realities of war while offering a lot of grit, positivity, and problem solving.

I have been brought up reading and hearing about WWII from the American point of view. Unlikely Warrior gave me a look at the German army battling on the Russian front. It points out that our enemies suffered as much as our troops did and the war through the eyes of the common soldier. A great book.

Excellent book. Large print making reading easy.

Unbelievable that someone ended up in this position. He really had no choice. He was brilliant about preserving his own life. He had to be a very bright man. Everyone should read this to understand what a tough life war involved soldiers live.

While this edition is not strictly perfect, I can't help but award five stars to it, for the following reasons:I) it's Maimonides' "Guide of the Perplexed", I mean, the very fact a contemporary edition of this rare and wise work exists is praiseworthy; this translation from Arabic is, on my opinion, very readable (I remind you that works from peripatetic philosophers usually aren't so).II) lack of footnotes: the mutilation of footnotes from the first edition (that was done to condense the original three volumes into this single one) may hurt to us who like references, but I admit that this lacking makes reading this great book a lot more challenging, and thus, we are obliged to learn the subtleties of Maimonides by ourselves rather than simply expecting the translator to give us the answer, and most certainly that was the author's intention. So the edition becomes a hardcore reading, where the reader must really use his mind to solve difficulties and obscurities and look up in literature the references which Maimonides is using.III) the auxiliary parts of the edition are indeed very good, such as the small biography given and an account of the manuscript tradition, not to mention a brief analysis of the work. A final index of recurring passages of Scripture and quotations is also helpful.It must be said, however, that this edition is a republishing from a 1904 edition, and thus there are several typos, mostly in reference to Biblical passages. While it is frustrating to open your Bible, look up the indicated chapter and only then discover the passage was taken from another chapter, I consider this a minor issue. The worst part is the small typeface, of course.About the teachings contained here, I can only say they are undoubtedly clever solutions by one the finest philosophers from the Middle Ages. The work is deep in its lessons and is another brilliant proof and sonorous voice showing us that it's the Middle Ages, not the Renaissance, nor Modernity, the era where reason and faith were found together. This is enough to tell about the work, and more than it I can't say, as you will probably observe after you start reading the book.All that said, I highly recommend this book to those who are really interested in philosophy, that is, those who are indeed in a quest for truth.

I have purchased other translations of this seminal work by the great rabbi and philosopher, Maimonides and found the text difficult to follow at times. The two volume edition is a welcome improvement as the translation makes the content easier to connect with and understand and therefore more enjoyable to explore. The thoughts and ideas behind the words are very deep and numerous sources are referenced by Maimonides including Greek philosophers so this is not an easy read by any stretch. The wisdom and depth of the author is vast and so I found myself re-reading portions of the text each time gaining additional insights. If you want to explore the wisdom of Maimonides, pay the extra fee for this translation as it is well worth it.

In Leo Strauss' helpful introduction he writes that "the teaching of the Guide is then neither entirely public or speculative nor is it entirely secret or exegetic. For this reason the plan of the Guide is neither entirely obscure nor entirely clear." After struggling with Volume One for several weeks, I can certainly attest to this sentiment that the themes are neither "entirely obscure nor entirely clear."The first 1/3 of Volume One seems initially straightforward and is primarily focused with a linguistic interpretation of the Torah in order to show that much of the biblical text is best understood metaphorically rather than literally and therefore does not support a belief in the corporeality of God. For example, the biblical text which states that God created man "in his image" according to Maimonides is not meant to connote that God has either "shape or configuration" and therefore is corporeal, but rather is best translated to mean that God created man in his "likeness" reflecting man's "intellectual apprehension" as the divine link with a creator. Similarly, Maimonides writes that the biblical text which states "My face shall not be seen" does not suggest a literal "face" of God but highlights that the Hebrew word for "face" is typically used figuratively and therefore the correct interpretation of the face of God is that "God's existence as it veritably is cannot be grasped." Although I found this part of the Guide to be illuminating, the rest of Volume One seemed to be a scattered series of disconnected biblical insights from the necessary characteristics needed to attain "human perfection" to demonstrating that God can only be described through negation, with the last 1/3 of the text dedicated to a refutation of Mutakallimun. According to Strauss, this lack of clarity is deliberate since the "secrets of the Law in not a public but a secret explanation" and therefore "the secret teachings are not presented in an orderly fashion but are scattered throughout the book." He also suggests that Volume Two is more straightforward than Volume One.Despite being somewhat more "perplexed" than before reading the book, I'm fairly certain that any inability to derive more meaning is likely due to my own shortcomings rather than a lack of thoroughness or insight on the part of the text.

This book speaks for itself. The translation is excellent and the introductions (there are two) are the best I have ever read in any type of book. The book is worth buying for the introductions alone. Maimonides is not for the faint of heart nor should it be the first philosophical book a person reads. The more Aristotle and Torah you know the better but everyone needs to learn somewhere and Maimonides is the master. His language is archaic but can be mastered as you learn his system of thought. Good luck and may G-d bless you in this endeavor.

The writting itself is very good. A classic. But this edition is not fit to be sold. The print is about 5pt type and it is almost 400 pages. Give me 800 pages that I CAN SEE. I wish I had read the other review about the small type. If I hadn't seen it myself I would never had believed a publisher would do such a thing. I am going to ask for my money back. I was looking foward to reading a classic of Religious Studies, but the small print has taken all the joy out of it. I will try to find a better edition. Do NOT buy this one!

This series is probably one of the most practical for users of CS4, but as a newcomer to the Adobe design series of programs, I have had a great deal of difficulty finding any text that breaks down the program in a way that I can easily understand and use. While this is clearly a reference guide rather than an instructional text, it is one of the few options that I have found helpful as a neophyte.The chapters cover everything from document setup to text, color, placing objects, effects and graphics. Unfortunately, this well-organized information is meaningless to anyone unfamiliar with the terminology of the programs. The author assumes I already know how to use the program and all I need are design tips. I can look up tool panels and their uses, but not how and when to apply them- or where they are located. I cannot draw a line until I stumble upon the information that a line is called a "stroke" in this program- even the index didn't help me with this issue. I don't just want shortcut keys, I am looking for a definition of terms, and so far have not found this issue addressed in any book I have purchased.I blunder through chapters trying to accomplish one thing or another, learning how to apply color or text, sometimes successful, sometimes not. And how about glyphs? I would love to use glyphs to create more interesting text, but cannot navigate my way through this feature to activate it. As well-planned as this text may be for those already familiar with Photoshop and Illustrator, things are pretty dicey for those of us with just minimal skills. Although I have found this book to be the most helpful of any I have purchased- and I have bought many- it still has many limitations for me. If anyone out there in the design community can recommend a better text for a beginner, I would be most grateful. Luan Gaines/2009.

The InDesign Visual QuickStart Guides have always been a great "go-to" reference for me. Sandee's QuickStart Guide for InDesign CS2 helped me learn to automate text styles for the first time when I got my first large book production job from a self-published author.Now that some of the books I layout in InDesign CS4 are going to ePub, as well as the printing press, it's more important to get the heading and subheading styles correct and integrated into the automatic Table of Contents creation feature. I recently purchased Sandee's Quickstart Guide for InDesign CS4 and it really helped me start automating my table of contents creation for the first time.When I need to stop "winging it" with InDesign and start learning to use this app the way it was intended, the InDesign CS4 for Macintosh and Windows: Visual QuickStart Guide is the "go-to" source for me, as I do production on the Mac.

This book is just okay. It's been very difficult to find what I need in the index. For example, I wanted to make rules above and below text. So I went to the index and looked up "rules." Nothing. Then I had to do a search online and finally determined that it was called "paragraph rules" which is an InDesign term. How was I supposed to know that?! This has been a continuous thing with this book. I look something up and cannot find it, most of the time and then I have to go online to find it that way. So I have ordered the InDesign CS4 Bible. I saw the index on the "Look Inside" section and it shows "rules." As I said this book is okay but not the greatest when looking for a specific thing.

I am a writer/photographer and fairly skilled with Photoshop CS4. Printing companies now want copy in the PDF format, and I was encouraged to get into a more up-to-date format than MS Word or Quark Express. My impression was that Adobe InDesign CS4 was a cutting edge publishing program. So, to make a long story short, I invested in the program and began to try to come to grip with its complexities. I believe the key to finding a useful "how to" book is to find one written the way you, personally, think. Most self-help books for computer programs are mediocre to poor...they just fail to communicate with your thought processes. To make a long story short, I invested in seven books from Amazon marketed to aid in learning InDesign CS4, from an InDesign for "Dummies" book to a supposed "Bible" for the program. I was disappointed in all but the Visual Quickstart Guide titled "InDesign CS4" written by Sandee Cohen and published by Peachpit Press. This book communicates with me. I'm no dummy, and have a Ph.D. degree in the sciences, but most manuals pretending to teach you a complex program don't present a logical and intuitive flow of information. I congratulate Sandee Cohen for helping me to learn InDesign CS4.

This book is full of information! I am a first time user of this progam and needed something to point me in the right direction with design, text and publishing. I found the book helpful and very detailed. There are pictures showing examples in there as well. I have been able to complete an 18pg booklet for a conference including photos, text, shapes, colors and other graphics. Not to mention the program book itself was way less inexpensive on Amazon.com than Barnes and Noble. I would definitely recommend it, especally for new users of InDesign.

A great read...my great-aunt's husband was in this regiment...so proud of him and honored!

My great-grandfather was one of the "Weary Boys" so I was really excited to find this book. It is an interesting, actual account of what life was like for the soldiers during the civil war.

... the Civil War or Ohio History. Pope gives a detailed account of an Ohio regiment's three-year tour of duty in the war, from the recruitment process in 1863 through the battles it participated in to Lee's surrender in `65. The 110th Ohio fought in many battles, including the Second Battle of Winchester, the Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle of Monocacy, and the final assaults at Petersburg and Appomattox Court House. Pope includes many first-person accounts from soldiers' letters and journals, and from Keifer's book about the war. You get a real feel for the conditions the soldiers lived under and their opinions about the decisions of their superiors--something you rarely get from standard history texts.

Good read. The book was well written technically. I became more enlighted on the politics behind the scenes of the Civil War and more appreciative of the deplorable conditions of the soldiers.

This is great for a comic book lover. My 8 year old loves to draw his own comics and I thought this would take the hassle out of drawing his own boxes and he could have them all in one place instead of a million sheets of paper all over hisroom. I can't wait to give it to him. Quality paper too!

I really like the number of pages this book gives me. It is a great deal. I also like the format, with the different-sized panels. It lends the story extra action because the bigger panels can give a scene more emphasis, because of the larger size. That way, these panels can be used for the more important scenes. This is a nice little book for kids who are into drawing comics. The only thing to be mindful of is that every page is exactly the same - you don't get any layouts other than the one on the cover, which is a bit repetitive after a while.

I bought this as a Christmas gift for an (almost) 11-year-old boy who has recently become interested in drawing his own comics. He LOVED it! I would highly recommend it. I believe the price is very fair for a great product that will get a lot of use and encourage creativity. :)

I use this to plan children’s book spreads. It’s awesome. I can visualize the storyboard easily. It’s compact enough to carry with me when I’m feeling inspired. This is the second time I’ve bought one because I loved using the first one.

Feels like good, quality paper and bound into a book already. Perfect for my son. I was a little disappointed that all the pages have the exact same layout, though (mirror images). I would definitely buy this again if my son wants to stick with drawing his own comics.

This is a book with blank pages of comic strips, nothing more. I was hoping I could take them out and use as hand outs but id have to rip or cut them out with a scissor. Still served the purpose tho.

As a suspense author, I don't get to read as much as I'd really like to. I treasure my reading time, and I'm probably a little too picky. But I read the first chapter of this one, and I knew I'd found not only a good book, but a new author to read. I'm really impressed that this is Cap Daniels' first book. The writing is excellent, the editing is professional, and the story is just a lot of fun. The Florida details are wonderful - I'm a Florida native, and he took me back home. I liked it so much I told my readers about it, and now I'm having fun watching them discover Cap Daniels. I'd love to take the credit when he hits the bestseller lists, but I can't. It's his writing that's going to make that happen.

It's hard for me to believe this is the author's first work. I'm usually too busy to read more than one novel a week, but I finished The Opening Chase in three days. If you enjoyed the late Vince Flynn's "Mitch Rapp" series as much as I have, I can guarantee you will like this mix of international espionage and sea-faring adventure equally well. A splendidly written story with plenty of action, intrigue, and romance. Of course in this world, romance may mean having your tongue sliced down the middle or a toe shot off, but that's the world Chase Fulton now lives in.

I have read pretty much every Florida-based action/adventure novel, including the entire catalogues of my fellow reviewers here, and I have to say that I was amazed at how much I enjoyed this book. It is right up there with the best of them.After reading so many novels of this genre, I'm pretty good at spotting the plot twists coming a mile away. This story however, had two good ones, and while I figured one out early on, another came on out of the blue, which was a nice change of pace. And the author does a great job of keeping the reader not-so-sure who's side the female protagonist is actually on. Great use of tension as we wait for that other shoe which may or may not drop.My only small quibble is that the last chapter could've been a bit longer with more detail, and that there could've been one more chapter dealing with the aftermath. But clearly it seems to lead us into the next book, which I am anxiously awaiting.

You will be hard pressed to find anything NOT to like about this spy, adventure, romance, thriller on the high seas! ⛵️ A first book for author Cap Daniels? I can only say WOW. The main characters are rich in uniqueness and bad-assedness (a word?). Chase Fulton is a baseball star in College until an injury kills his dream of the big leagues. After going through the five stages of grief, he puts his mind into becoming the best Psychologist he can be. But his psych professor has other plans for him. We meet Ace, Beater, Tuner, and Rocket 🚀 and Chase’s life takes a 180* into becoming “a tool, an agent of democracy, a guardian of freedom.....a hero, plain and simple”. When he meets Anya, the strangest things start happening, even though it’s “love at first sight” for Chase.There are lots of twists and surprises, a wonderful complexity of the storyline, and in spite of the expected violence, a marvelous joy for life that runs through the hearts of the main characters. The goals are achieved and the book ends kind of suddenly, but it is not a cliffhanger. A fascinating and entertaining read, so I have already bought Book 2!

Loved every word! I still can't believe the author managed to "suck me into" the story by telling me about a college baseball catcher!!! (The only sport I dislike more than baseball is golf.) I started the book just to get a feel for what it was about and the next thing I know it's after 2 AM. A great story about an injured baseball catcher becoming a black ops killer with lots of help from his psych "coach" and a Russian spy along the way.I was asked by another author to purchase this and I'm so glad she recommended it to me...Definitely a MUST READ in my opinion. And while you're at it, get the second book in the series to save time when you finish reading "The Opening Chase".

The new Chase Fulton Series by Cap Daniels promises to be a long running enjoyment based on this first installment.Even though a little slow for me with the start the pace quickly picks up with new twist and turns and additional characters. Utilizing some “older experienced” operatives adds credibility to the scenario(s). Timely as our News today bombards us with so much Russian conspiracies the storyline is a natural fit.I believe Daniels has included everything..... Danger...Conspiracy... Love Interest...... Yesterday’s Operatives and their History plus both Bad Ass Women and Men who are the “Good Guys” who can get the job done!You will not be disappointed! Well. Done. Nice. Read.

I bought this book on the FB recommendation of an author whose work I read, really like and now eagerly wait for the next offering from Cap Daniels, Ms. McKenna knew what she was talking about in her recommendation. Cap Daniels characters are well defined, the plot is fast-moving and suspenseful, it ranges from Florida, Virginia, the Bahamas, Cuba, and points east in the Caribbean. The story-line is timely and there is no "somehow this happened" scenarios as the novel plays out. Well worth the read.

After reading the latest in Stinnett’s series, I read another Florida author’s first book. That book was filled with over-the-top gratuitous violence and unbelievable scenarios. However, one of his reader’s negative comments included a recommendation to read Stinnett and Cap Daniels. Thanks to whoever wrote that. I may have found another Florida author I enjoy.

At some point while wading through the hundreds of books, thousands of YouTube videos, and millions of blogs and web pages devoted to teach a human being how to run, I got so bogged down by so much contradictory points of view that I just gave up. Not on running, just on the search for the perfection of it. I really love to run. But for thirteen years I stopped. This year I turn 44 and I have decided to make duathlon my sport. For years I have been body building and cross training on road and mountain bike. I started running again this spring as part of my training and immediately became hobbled by shin splints. And so I did what everyone does, I searched the Internet for advice on how to fix the problem. And that lead to article after article and video after video of information on every conceivable aspect of running. It also led to a severe bout of information overload and it led me to just give up on reading, viewing, or listening to any more advice from experts on running. So when I picked this book up at the library it was only because the words body and building where in the title and I spent two decades doing that so I figured I could wade through the B.S. one more time but with little hope of getting past the first chapter. But then as I read on I realized that there isn't really any B.S. and that it rather clearly breaks down running by individual body systems and yet shows how the are all connected. It also hits on most of the running training methods out there today but in a way that gives you an overview rather than a dogmatic opinion. There are also chapters devoted to all the usual aspects covered in every other running book I've read. But this is more like a running for dummies book but for people of average intelligence. People who aren't necessarily attempting to be a better runner by reading but rather by running. So for me, this book is it. I am done. I am returning this book to the library today after the copy I orderd on Amazon arrives today. I'm not reading any more books on running. I'm not reading any more magazines on the latest running shoes. I will still watch the occasional video on running events and destinations but not on form or cadence or stretching or cross training. It's all just a waist of energy to me at this point. I've settled on a source of information for me that I will reference from now on on those subjects. I now will own exactly one book on running after reading or attempting to read dozens. It won't get updated with the latest greatest fads and crazes in the world of running and to me that's good. In fact, during my search for perfection in my running I realized that this book probably isn't perfect, BUT, it's good enough. And good enough is something I've never found from any of the other books, videos, and cyber opinions that I have waded through to get here.

Build Your Running Body seems like one of the more thorough running books out there. Here's a quick breakdown of the chapters...-Chapter 1 covers basic running stuff such as motivation, gear, etc.-Chapter 2 is what I think of as the meat and potatoes of the book. It tells you how to build the parts of your body to get you a better "running body". A few areas discussed include the muscles, connective tissues, hormones, nervous system - I like the some of these are things runners don't normally think about.-Chapter 3 talks helps you with a running program, talking about things such as a training schedule, recovery, injury prevention (BTW, runners with problematic hamstrings might want to check out Bulletproof Your Hamstrings-Chapter 4 discusses running and your diet-Chapter 5 talks about a racing strategy/approachAs you can see, its a pretty complete book that cover a lot of important (and little thought about) running information. There's also over a hundred workouts to help build your running body - from plyometrics to cross training - and there's even recipes! So if you're looking for ways to improve your running and your body, its worth a good look! :)

This is the *one* book to get if you are going to get any book on running. It's comprehensive, well-written and has many practical examples and advice. It validates many of the things I do now to keep this running body on the road.

I don't say a " must read book" but a " must have book" for any type of runners (or trainers) from amateurs to elite athletes. The book has very valuable information about how to plan a training routine, how to feed and how to avoid injuries, which you will need to check over and over during your preparation. Not only runners but also any kind of sports people can get advantage from it because it contains many useful information about human anatomy and results of important scientific researches about sports performance. The only downturn of it is, tables in the books are not easy to read in the kindle edition; so I strongly recommend to buy a hardcopy.

As I near my 30th birthday (yikes) I've been trying to get in better shape. This book has been very helpful for taking my running to the next level. Prior to reading it I typically ran at a fairly fast pace with low mileage and suffered tons of injuries from overuse. The book is very helpful in guiding you to running at the appropriate pace and distances. It will teach you how to avoid injury, get stronger, and faster. Its a very comprehensive book and has lots of information about strength training, improving nervous system, food, strengthening connective tissue, etc. etc. I really like all the exercises for injury prevention! Tons of information. If there is a critique, I think it is that the running plans are often a bit overly complex. If you are a new runner or not terribly serious you will have to modify the run plans to fit your needs. However, the information is all there to make those decisions. The book reads very easy and I enjoyed reading all the chapters that fit my goals. In the last 4 months I've gone from running ~ 3-4 miles a week to running >12 miles a week. I've avoided major injuries and the legs feel pretty good.

Wow, this book is like a reference manual for runners! Information geared towards whatever level you're at. Very detailed and lots of pictures to help demonstrate exercises, etc. Routines are included such as strengthening muscles using weights, stretching and routines for running schedules.

Agree with several others that this covers many, many key issues with running. I have some books that are better on specific parts of running, however this is the best overall book I have. I bought two additional books for friends.
