Though I'd heard of Tim Pat Coogan for years, I had immersed myself in the works of other writers who turned their focus toward the era of The Rising & The Irish Civil War. This book is my first by him. Coogan has a comfortable narrative style; I appreciate that. He's accessible. He doesn't talk above his intended audience, nor does he talk down to those who struggle for understanding. This is important. It's the works of others I would like to address. I gained much deeper understanding of Irish history (1916-1922) from historians like: D.M. Leeson, Ernie O'Malley (who was there!), SM Sigerson (to a much lesser degree), and others. By the time I got to Coogan's book, The Twelve Apostles, I already knew more than he was telling the reader! I was a bit stunned by the shallowness of what he was "revealing" to the reader. First impressions are difficult to forget, but I will make an attempt regarding Coogan. I am not unaware of his reputation as an Irish historian; I just need to see more evidence.
I would agree with other reviews that cite this book as thoroughly enjoyable. Its well written, interesting and easy to read. However, I was disappointed by the authors continuous sideswipes at deValera throughout the book. I felt that the author allowed his own personal opinions and the whole Collins v deValera narrative become too much part of a book where the core topic was something else. That said I would still recommend it to anyone interested in reading Irish history.
Coogan is the best for telling Irish history in terms for all to understand. His story of Collins 12 Apostles better knon as The Squad is up to par. He relays how Collins formed this unit to neutralize threats. He also shows how politics impacted it especially in the civil war after his death. Dwyer' s book is centered on The Squad. Get both and you'll get a clear picture of how the struggle for Irish Independence was fought on the streets of Dublin.
Good story about Michael Collins' small covert hit group and the complicated events involved in the Irish fight for independence. Good discussion of individual characters, conflicts, and vendettas. Not enough detail on the death of Michael Collins.
Very well written book about a specific part of Irish history with a narrow focus on Michael Collins and his "hit squad" attempting to rid Ireland of the British. As others have indicated, the narrative style flows and is easy to read. And also as many have noted, Mr. Coogan is not hesitant to show his partiality for Collins and against de Valera. I can overlook this because the book is interesting and Coogan is a good writer. The Collins/de Valera arguments have persisted over the last almost century and likely won't ever be resolved...

The book is informative and well written. Actually gives the account in the actual people's words. I have always liked Coogan's style of writing.
