Some of the info feels pretty dated. I was hoping to get more info on the culture to try and understand if moving to Germany is the right fit for me. It's kind of a strange hodge podge of posts, and several were useful, but many were not. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but this didn't totally hit the mark and I'm still a little unsure of the impression I'm supposed to get.

Although my travel in Germany is limited, I found this book to be a wonderful review of the cultural differences. A book worth reading even if you are unable to travel to this wonderful land.

Most of my limited knowledge comes from the recent World Fantasy Awards controversy (which, I must admit, doesn’t exactly make me want to run out and buy copy of THE COMPLETE WORKS OF H.P. LOVECRAFT), and that one episode of SUPERNATURAL (which, as it just so happened, TNT reran this morning. Serendipity!)I am, however, I huge Seanan McGuire fangirl, and it’s her contribution that sold me on this anthology. (Her short stories in particular are phenomenal, and “Down, Deep Down, Below the Waves” is no exception.) I’m glad, too, because THE GODS OF HP LOVECRAFT is a pretty solid collection of science fiction stories. As you can see, I rated everything a 4 or 5, which is pretty impressive; usually anthologies are more of a mixed bag for me. The individual summaries are relatively vague and un-spoilery, but please skip them if you’d rather read this book with fresh eyes.“Call the Name” by Adam LG Nevill (Cthulhu) – The year is 2045, and humanity has awakened Cthulhu, our alien creator and one temperamental god. Responsible for mass extinction events 443 million, 200 million, and 65 million years ago, our overpopulation, warming, and general degradation of the planet will be our downfall – just not in the way most scientists predict. 4/5 stars. While I loved the environmentally-friendly message of the story (not to mention Cleo and her proud lineage of mad women scientists), the language is a little florid for my taste (though quite possibly in line with the source material).“The Dark Gates” by Martha Wells (Yog-Sothoth) – When the Baron Mille’s stepdaughter and secretary go missing, the Baroness hires “lady detective” Reja and her team to find them. It turns out that the Baron hasn’t quite been himself since exploring a mysterious fissure in an old mine… 4/5 stars. This story has a lovely steampunk vibe to it, and I love Reja and her diverse (not always human) crew of detectives.“We Smoke the Northern Lights” by Laird Barron (Azathoth) – A probe sent to Pluto in 1956 returns earlier than expected – perhaps after slipping through a wormhole in space? Now NCY-93′s core contains information the likes of which threatens to corrupt anyone who views it. 5/5 stars. The protagonists of this story are two precocious young geniuses/psychopaths named Mac and Dred whose training in the Himalayan mountains evokes images of Pai Mei – and whose current occupation feels like an alternate ‘verse version of the Men of Letters.“Petohtalrayn” by Bentley Little (Nyarlathotep) – An unassuming archaeologist named Ellison is summoned to the underground prison of Nyarlathotep to lead his army of rat-people into the sun. 4/5 stars. I would love to adopt a rat with opposable thumbs!“The Doors that Never Close and the Doors that Are Always Open” by David Liss (Shub-Niggurath) – Blessed be the bankers … by Shub-Niggurath, at least. 4/5 stars. Not quite what I expected!“The Apotheosis of a Rodeo Clown” by Brett J. Talley (Tsathoggua) – When a mining company blasted a new shaft deep within the bowels of the Sutter’s End mine, they unleashed a terrible god (the drawing of which looks suspiciously like blob-Chet of WEIRD SCIENCE fame). A god embraced by the local biker gang, natch. 4/5 stars. I could do without the heroic bullfighter, okay. (Pro tip: all of the cows you torture for fun are “terrified” – not just the old, broken ones.)“Rattled” by Douglass Wynne (Yig) – Two thirteen-year-old boys go on a vision quest to mark their passage into manhood – but only one of them comes out the other side. Seventeen years later, Nathan returns to the desert to find out what fate befell his best friend Adam.The story is based on the Curse of Yig: “If you kill a snake on sacred ground, you become a snake, or a snakelike creature. [...] Anyway, the curse, it’s like karma, right? It means that Indians valued the lowest of the low, creatures literally without a leg to stand on. And if you hurt one, you should expect to find yourself stripped of power and crawling on your belly on the ground among them, yeah?” Let’s just say that Adam is kind of a s***head who loves to kill defenseless animals and leave it at that.5/5 stars. While the vegan in me would like to see this principle extended to all animals (and not just snakes), you learn to take the animal-friendly crumbs where you can.“In Their Presence” by Christopher Golden & James A. Moore (The Mi-Go) – The crew of the Burleson travels the Arctic in search of the remains of the Eleanor Lockley, lost at sea some 80 years before – but her cargo may be more valuable than any of them realize. 4/5 stars.“Dream a Little Dream of Me” by Jonathan Maberry (Nightgaunts) – Set in Maberry’s Sam Hunter universe, this is a pulpy story starring a hard-bitten, shape-shifting PI. A weirdo hires Sam to protect a precious artifact from the Thule Society; but the job goes sideways when Sam learns that his idea of being a “champion” differs greatly from his employer’s. 4/5 stars. It feels a little more contemporary and stylistically different from the other stories, but in a good way.“In the Mad Mountains” by Joe R. Lansdale (Elder Things) – The survivors of a shipwreck – who remember nothing of the trip they were on – find themselves stranded on barren sheet of ice, along with the detritus of other wayward travelers. And they aren’t alone. 5/5 stars.“A Dying of the Light” by Rachel Caine (Great Race of Yith) – Based on “The Shadow Out of Time,” as well as the author’s own experiences caring for a parent with Alzheimer’s, “Dying” tells the story of an elderly Alzheimer’s patient who makes a miraculous recovery. Only the woman who reclaims Acanthus Porter’s body may not be Mrs. Porter after all. 5/5 stars.“Down, Deep Down, Below the Waves” by Seanan McGuire (The Deep Ones) – Despite the apparent lack of lesbians, Seanan McGuire’s story is one of my favorites. I don’t want to reveal too much, but suffice it to say that thar be mermaids here…or at least mermaid-like creatures who enjoy experimenting on humans. But said humans torture mice for a living, so karma. 5/5 stars.Though the stories are inspired by Lovecraft’s twelve principal deities, you don’t have to be a fan to enjoy them; they all pretty much stand on their own. But. Those who are familiar with Lovecraft will likely get more out of them. For example, I spotted a number of recurring elements (the scientist known as Ellison; Miskatonic University) that I didn’t know quite what to do with. I suspect that there were even more Easter eggs that I didn’t pick up on.Finally, a note on the formatting: Usually I prefer ebooks to print books, at least when it comes to books that don’t have many graphic elements (comic books; crafty, “found footage” novels like ILLUMINAE and THE DEAD HOUSE). I decided to go with a print copy of THE GODS OF HP LOVECRAFT because of the illustrations – which are lovely, by the way. But there are only twelve of them, and the type’s a little on the small side, and even harder to read when italicized, as it occasionally is in large chunks (e.g., Cleo’s letter to Yolanda in “Call the Name”). Or maybe the adjustable font on my Kindle has just spoiled me. Either way, I wish I’d opted for the ebook instead. The print book is indeed handsome, but at what cost? (Eyestrain, that’s what.)** Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book for review through Library Thing’s Early Reviewers program. **

I frequently hear that Lovecraftian / Cthulhu fiction will soon run its course. In the near future people will tire of this genre of horror and soon something new will replace it. However, based on “The Gods of H.P. Lovecraft,” edited by Aaron J. French that near future is certainly not today. Each story is a unique take on one of the Lovecraftian “Gods,” which covers the Old Ones, the Elder Things, Mi-Gos and even Nightgaunts. The stories vary from very good to excellent. No duds here. From Adam LG Nevill’s tale of Cthulhu, to the appearance of Nyarlathotep by Bentley Little, to the dangers of the Elder Things demonstrated by Joe Lansdale, to Rachel Caine’s documentation of the Great Race of Yith, all of stories take a stroll through the Lovecraftian universe yet still play to the music of their own amorphous, idiot flute-players. I actually give this book six out of five stars. I know this will be one of my favorite books in 2016.

This one took me a ridiculously long time to read. Not because I didn't like it, but because it was actual reading on my Kindle, rather than audio. I can rock an audiobook as I work, but physical reading means I get a lunch period (about 20 min) each day for reading, and it seems I am reading more manuscripts for illustration work rather than for fun during that time these days. So therefore, I have a new record for taking the longest to read a book that should have never taken this long. Ahh well, it is what it is. Regarding the book itself, it was not an even mix of great tales, but the ones that I loved outweighed the ones I liked less, so I call it a win. Recommended if one has any interest in the Mythos. The rest of y'all are on your own.

This book attempts to take Cthulu out of the shaded past into the bright today and still have the abiding horror that Lovecraft injected into his stories. It is a daunting task, but in at least one of the stories there is great success, "The Doors That Never Close And The Doors That Are Always open" , by David Liss, an author of whom I have no knowledge other than this title, but in this tale of a grad student who steps into the 21st Century and finds the "Old Ones" there is true horror. There are others, but this one is the best of the lot.

Excellent anthology focusing, one tale each, on the “gods” and alien races featured in the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Some standout stories include “In Their Presence” by Christopher Golden & James A Moore, “In the Mad Mountains” by Joe R Lansdale, and “A Dying of the Light” by Rachel Caine, though all the tales were well done. Strongly recommended to fans of Lovecraft seeking fresh new approaches to his familiar material.

It's been my experience that most anthologies have at least one stinker in the bunch. Such is not the case here. Each story is a gem. It's probably the best Lovecraft inspired anthology since Shadow Over Baker Street.

Most of the stories are good, though a few take some time to really get into. They are not as creepy as Lovecraft's original stories, but they do a decent job of portraying the Mythos monsters are the incomprehensible things that they are. I loved how the editors included a bit about the featured deity / species after the story that featured them.

A great collection of stories based on HP Lovecraft’s elder gods and monsters. Every story seemed to bring something new to the mythos. Perfect length for one story a night before bed.

For any fan of this genre you owe it to yourself to add this to your collection.Many of the shorts are connected in theme and engaging. I have it on paperback but the Kindle app is just more convenient. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Great way to help your child prepare for preschool. My daughter is 3 and is having no trouble at all doing this workbook!! It's almost too simple for her but she still really enjoys it! This workbook has a lot of mazes,letter & number practicing...which is exactly what I was looking for. For $2 this was a no-brainer to buy.

Many Great Pictures for your child to work on to help boost Confidence in what to expect for School

We bought this book a few months ago at the beginning of the school year. At first most of it was lost on our 4 yr old; I would try to go through it with him but he would lose interest pretty quickly. He has been going to a home preschool group for the past few months as well and has finally taken interest in this book. Each day for the past week he has requested to go through it and has traced all the letters on his own. Now he is asking how to do some of the activities and then takes off to do them on their own. I have been quite pleased with his interest and glad we had the book for him.The only thing I would change are some of the pages where the activity is "what came before/after." A few of them are not clear and really confused him. Heck, I have a Bachelor's degree and I had to take a minute to figure one of them out! :)

I got this for my 3.5 year old to practice some skills as she is not enrolled in preschool this year. I love some of the concepts that it hits (patterns, spatial reasoning, matching, etc). The pages are bright and colorful, which appeals to my daughter and she loves working in the book! I do have to read directions and guide her through, its something they can easily "sit down and do." That is totally fine, but figured it was worth noting. I'm giving 4/5 because I wish it didn't have SO many pages that were alphabet letters and tracing. It is a bit redundant and takes at least 1/4-1/3 of the book. I would have gotten an ABC book if I wanted that much letter practice!

My son does not like reading or writing very much. He gets very discouraged easily. I have to convince him to practice daily. I bought this book hoping he might find it a bit funner and it worked. He does not get bored as easy as he did before. This has little activities in it to keep him occupied and keep his interest. It has every letter and is very educational for a kid going into kindergarten. He especially likes it when i put a sticker on his page when he's done and tell him how great he did in his "study book". IT REALLY GIVES HIM THE CONFIDINCE HE NEEDS TO KEEP PRACTICING. Not too simple and not too difficult. Not only does this have tracing letters but it also has little activities to get his big brain working such as simple things like coloring things that start with a certain letter. Very glad I got this book. PLEASE LIKE MY REVIEW IF YOU FOUND IT HELPFUL. THANK YOU!

Do you finally gotten around to completing this entire book with my almost 3-year-old. She loves it, has engaging and colorful pages. Especially enjoyed the opportunities to trace and tell stories on each page. You can use your imagination to expand all the lessons provided and it makes for an excellent games outside of the workbook as well. Overall great purchase for the price.

Nice book. Kids love it. There are quite a few books similar to these activity books. So nothing against anyone. You wouldnt really go wrong buying this one or anything else that encourages kids to read and write and help fine tune their fine-motor skills.

I bought this workbook for my 4 & 5 year old grandchildren who visit with me during the summer. This workbook will keep their little minds in focus over the summer. You'll like this one because it's fun and educational for them.

TWICE-BAKED SWEET POTATOES 2 bacon slices, diced  4 medium orange-fleshed sweet potatoes  2 tablespoons firmly packed dark brown sugar  2 tablespoons all-purpose flour  2 tablespoons unsalted butter, diced, plus 1⁄2 cup (4 oz/125 g) unsalted butter, melted  ½ cup (2 oz/60 g) chopped pecans  ¼ cup (2 fl oz/60 ml) heavy cream  1 teaspoon ground cinnamon  ¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg  ¾ teaspoon salt  1½ cups (3 oz/90 g) miniature marshmallows   SERVES 8   Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a sauté pan over medium heat, sauté the bacon until crisp and browned, about 6 minutes. Transfer the bacon to a paper towel–lined plate to drain.  Using a fork, prick the skin of the sweet potatoes several times. Arrange on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until tender, about 11⁄4 hours. Let cool. Meanwhile, in a bowl, stir together the brown sugar and flour. Add the 2 tablespoons diced butter and, using a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the pecans and bacon to make a streusel mixture. Refrigerate until ready to use.  When the sweet potatoes are cool enough to handle, halve them lengthwise and scoop out the flesh, reserving the sweet potato skins and keeping them as intact as possible. Arrange the sweet potato skins on an aluminum foil–lined rimmed baking sheet.  In a food processor, combine the sweet potato flesh, the ½ cup melted butter, the cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt and process until smooth. Spoon the sweet potato mixture back into the skins on the baking sheet. Sprinkle the streusel mixture on top, dividing evenly. Bake until the streusel is toasted, 10–15 minutes.  Remove the sweet potatoes from the oven and heat the broiler. Sprinkle the marshmallows evenly over the streusel. Broil the sweet potatoes until the marshmallows are lightly browned, about 2 minutes. Serve right away.

Pretty pictures, but the recipes are pretty basic. Nothing about "make ahead" or feed a crowd. There are so many Thanksgiving cookbooks out there, I'd give this one a pass and select another, more interesting title.

"K-19: The Widowmaker" by retired USN Captain Peter Huchthausen is a worthwhile companion to the movie and provides much of the factual background omitted from the film, which was based on the events revealed here. I was a fan of the film overall, but would have preferred a strictly factual retelling without altering the biographies of the crew and some of the interpersonal drama that was seemingly exaggerated for the big screen. Having said that, I have no reservations about the book, as it is a quick and compelling read that covers far more than simply the K-19 and its trials. At the outset I'd like to mention that in the Soviet Navy K-19 did have a nickname but it wasn't "The Widowmaker", it was the much more straightforward "Hiroshima". Thankfully due to the bravery and ingenuity of the Soviet submariners a larger nuclear tragedy was averted on July 4, 1961, and the book focuses on this specific case and in general on the difficult conditions faced by members of the Soviet navy (particularly in comparison with Rickover's nuclear navy in the US).There are other great books on Cold War nuclear submarines that are more comprehensive than this, but the real gem here is that it contains large and very insightful passages from the memoirs of the K-19's Captain, Nikolai Zateyev. That he was a brilliant leader is a given, but his insider critiques of the Soviet navy are both scary and informative. The book discusses a number of other Soviet naval calamities, many of which were never known about in the West due to strict military security protocols. Finally, the book covers the disposition and ongoing environmental threats related to the decaying Russian nuclear infrastructure: this is a problem that will not be resolved for generations, and before reading this book I didn't completely grasp the scope of the situation, which is grave indeed.I highly recommend "K-19: The Widowmaker" by Peter Huchthausen as an insightful expose on the K-19 accident specifically, but as a critique of Soviet submarine design, construction, and operation in general. Rarely has an indictment of an institution been as well told or scathing.

Captain Huchthausen makes a brilliant and captivating history which raises this submarine crew to hero status no matter what country you live in. One of the members of K-19's crew, Vasily Archivpav, later sailed on B-59 in October 1962, during the Cuban Missle Crisis.. Vasily was the fleet commander of a flotlla of 4 diesel-electric subs, all carrying nuclear tipped torpedoes. The captain of B-59 had authority to fire his torpedoe along with the assent of the political officer. Because of his horrible experience on K-19 a year earlier he overrode their order to fire, preventing WW III.This singular incident had a different outcome because of the crew of K-19. Frankly, there should be a World Memorial in every country for the heroism of these two Russian commanders, at least one in Moscow and one in Washington DC, Captain Zateyev and fleet commander Archipav. SALUTE!

As an older book, it never ceases to amaze me the perspective of an insiders view of nuclear submarines (Soviet), and the need to rush into production numerous models that weren't fully tested. It shows the military and I know even ours, the penchant to cover up messes, make scape goats, all the usual political ploys.the appreciation doesnlt come from the insiders view or we are better than they are. the appreciation stems from they were highly dedicated and they believed with all there heart and soul they were defending there country against all enemei4es both foreign and domestic. As a young officer in 1970, I viewed the soviets as a brainwash hoard waiting to overrun us. I never saw us through there eyes. Bravery comes int he form of a 19 year old sailor who gave his life to save his shipmates, bravery comes from a young officer who did the same. There bravery comes from love of life and country.I recommend you read the book, see the movie by the same name and view life through glasses that aren't rose colored.

I served on submarines and this was an excellent description of life and tragedy. Great research by author.

As a retired cold war submariner I was shocked by the atrocities that my enemy (but brother) submariners were subjected to in the Soviet Navy. We always heard rumors of the conditions these young men were subjected to but, due to their closed society, they remained rumors. This book is a must read for any US Navy submariner. We can only thank the almighty that we lived in an open society and sailed on ships where safety was the prime concern. Say what you might about Hyman Rickover and his tyrant ways, he did his job well and we were relatively safe from radiation and fairly sure we would return from the depths.

Annie Martin’s moss book is nothing short of fantastic! I highly recommend it to anyone who is even vaguely interested in moss. Mossin’ Annie she knows her stuff and does a fine job of making mosses accessible to everyone. I own several moss books and this is my all-time favorite and the book I go to first for assistance.The book is superbly illustrated with photographs of moss on nearly every page. It is the best-illustrated moss book on the market. And the photos are beautiful! There are a number of pictures of how to use moss in the garden, a section of some famous Japanese moss gardens, and a delightful introduction to 25 common mosses. And the photos are large enough to provide the detail that the reader needs to become familiar with the moss.It’s easy to follow Annie Martin’s step-by-step tutorials on how to design, plant, and care for moss in the garden. Importantly she goes into detail about steps you need to take to determine where moss will grow well in your garden. My husband and I really enjoyed following her suggestions for assessing our yard and were delighted to locate moss that is already growing on our property. I bought the book this winter (I live in Michigan) and using this book we have already started two small gardens in different locations on our property. And we have just begun!

I have always loved the look of moss and now after being inspired by this awesome book I can't wait to get started incorporating moss into my garden. As a master gardener I love trying new things. The internet is full of misinformation on how to get moss growing. I always thought it was a bogus idea blending moss with buttermilk among other things, Annie agrees this is not a way to get moss started. She definitely knows her moss and I love watching her YouTube videos. I was so excited finding out she wrote a book. It's so fun to look for moss and now I know you can plant it any day of the year! I truly adore this book. I love how the author provides me with the confidence that I can grow a moss garden too. With step-by-step instructions and tons of information I can't wait to get started! I also love and appreciate her eco-philosophies as well. I want to own every book Ms. Martin has written.

A thorough book that allows even a beginner gardener to start mossin'. I bought this to start adding a moss component to my shady medicinal garden - I wanted info on how to start actually propagating moss rather than just waiting and hoping it shows up - and Annie Martin's book didn't disappoint. After reading it, I came away excited and ready to jump right in and start moss gardening!

Our lawn is going to moss. It is greener, stays greener all season, than our grass ever did. Helped in identifying the several types of moss growing now and how to spread or multiply its area, and take care of it. Glad we found and read this book. Whenever we asked our "spray and run" lawn service about moss, we just got blank stares and no comment. They would only say that we need to get rid of the moss and sod our lawn (very expensive and requires more "spray and run" chemicals). We have one side yard in 100% moss (very shading there) and it is great. The other side is now in process, but may take a year or so -- kind of letting nature do much of the work.

So bought this book and showed it to my sister, and she took it! Then she showed it to a good friend, and the friend took it! Who knows where my original book went - out to the mossin' yonder. So now I am re-buying the book because it is so delightful to read and a visual paradise - thank you, Mossin' Annie, for a book of wonder! Barbara & George Groome

This is a great primer for moss lawn enthusiasts. Annie Martin's love of moss gardening is evident in her poetic style of writing. As a beginning moss grower I gleaned many useful tips for expanding my moss patches to eventually form a lawn area.

I got this book because I found a small tuff of moss growing on a brick in my weedy garden, It looked like a mini carpet of green so I was interested in learning more. Very educational and I like to attempted to grow a small batch in a glass tank.
