I saw this book was recommended for toddlers who are about 18months old. I ordered it and I was not very impressed with the pictures but I read it to my son. Oh my! He loves this book! He started using the words in a short time. He'd say, "Fast!" and then run a few steps. He also said, "Heavy" the one day when he tried to lift a park bench. I'm so glad I bought this. It's one of his favorites.

This book is the potty favourite. We read it as many times as needed for #2 to happen and it never gets old. Easy to give examples of opposites, our little guy knows it by heart and sometimes "reads" it to me instead, we talk about it without even having the book present. Once, in a hotel room, he put the phone handle on his head because of this book which was hilarious because his generation will never really know handheld phones in that way. Anyway, just want to promote it as a solidly enjoyable read for the 2-3 year old set.

My toddler is going through a phase where she’s recently become very afraid of other kids but watches them with curiosity and even mimics their behavior (be it laughing or squealing or crying). So instead of playing with them she keeps a safe distance but I can tell there’s a part of her that wants to play along. I think the hippopotamus may be going through similar shyness/fears. I’m hoping my child will relate and see that the hippopotamus overcame it and said yes to putting her fears aside and making new friends, and she can, too! Very cute book! Someone commented they thought it was sad that the ending brought a new character who essentially replaces the hippopotamus (excluded and watching from the sidelines), but I thought it was kind of cute/clever and points out that there are other shy kids out there. You’re not the first— or the last— kid to feel this way; some kids need a little time to warm up to making new friends and that’s okay. That’s the message we are taking from it anyway! But the book is written so that I think it can be interpreted to relate to other lessons. It’s good like that!

This is probably my all-time favorite children's book. It's short, but really fun for both kids and parents. As with all Boynton's books the animals are adorable. Although the text doesn't really tell a story, it lends itself to acting out by changing your voice to mimic whisper, shout, high, low, etc. I feel like my toddler really picked up these abstract concepts faster because my voice and the pictures reinforce each other. My 2.5 year old still loves reading this and loves to do a call-and-response type game with us.

Very cute book, and can't beat the price! My 12 month old loves Sandra Boynton and regularly picks Opposites at story time. The book is simple and engaging. The illustrations are adorable and appealing to little ones. You can't go wrong with anything by Sandra Boynton if you're buying books for an infant or toddler.

This author is amazing. Short books that rhyme. Toddlers with short attention spans will enjoy these books and you'll actually be able to finish it. Pictures are cute and full of animals. My husband and I can recite many of her books by memory. We try to collect as many as possible. Our favorite by far is The Bedtime Book

baby loves it. its a an easy book to read if your little one like to flip through the pages quickly.

Love this book. The illustrations are fun and entertaining and the text flows really well. This is one of my favorite Boynton books. She found some really funny opposite and the whole book rhymes. I highly recommend.
