About the Author

Todd M. Howard is an accomplished songwriter, musician, and performer and is the bassist/vocalist in the acoustic American roots quartet Last Fair Deal. He co-produced and mixed the band's most recent album, True Tales. In addition to playing bass for several other bands and recording artists, Todd is founder and principal of Howard Digital Media, a Massachusetts-based creative media development company. In 2011, Todd produced two records for new artists Ally LaRoche and Bill Bonnell, and he is currently co-producing San Francisco-based singer-songwriter Karmen Buttler's upcoming release. This is an informative and well written users guide. I can't see what all the negative reviews are about. Sure, the pictures could be a bit better, but it's not like you can't see them. I have terrible vision and can see them good enough. And as for the middle section with all the useless pictures of the various menus, who cares! Skip over it you snivelers. I am glad I bought it, and would recommend it to anyone who needs help with Garageband 11.

I purchased two books, GarageBand '11- How It Works (copyright 2013) and the more exhaustive GarageBand '11 Power: The Comprehensive Recording and Podcasting Guide (copyright 2012) to help me walk through and become familiar with the general organization of Garageband. My purpose being to learn how to record some demos in aid of securing gigs in new to me venues in the singer songwriter genre. I am posting this review for both.I have years of playing in and running sound in live rock bands so I can claim familiarity with mixing boards and general audio signal paths, inserts, etc. I have also played around with ProTools, but stopped short of climbing the very steep learning curve of that pro level DAW.Both of these works are reasonably well written and are decent at describing the recording workflow. What they both lack is being updated to conform to the latest edition of the GarageBand (10.0.1 at the time I'm writing this). The window content is significantly different, not dramatically, but significantly and if you are counting on being able to proceed by following the written directions/ screen shots in these books, you will not succeed and you will be frustrated. I note that even the brief Apple website video tutorials are equally, if not mores out of date.I don't know of/ have not yet discovered an up to date resource manual/ user's guide for GarageBand, so I have no alternative material to suggest, but I doubt I would purchase these works again.

riends in GarageBand land: I'm still looking for that perfect book to help beginners to GarageBand learn GarageBand 11. The suggestion for the book, "GarageBand '11 Power!" -- well, this is not the book. The author is passionate but spends the first 58 pages telling you what he is going to tell you later in the book, so a reader must keep slogging along, not really being told anything, not learning any real how-to tips or new-you-can-use until ... who knows when?Sadly, this book does not fill the niche for the beginner.Wish there was a MIssing Manual edition for a later GarageBand issue. I'm picking up how-to tips from various places. The Missing Manual for GarageBand 1.1 was terrific.

Read other reviews about; too many pictures, bad illustrations, too technical. B.S., all non-issues. In fact the more the better, as far as screen shots go.Also the pictures were fine. Had no trouble understanding, in fact it also explained alot about the Mac too.I dunno, I thought it was really helpful nad easy to follow along. 5 stars for sure.

I have been looking for an updated reference for Garageband for awhile and ordered this based on its 4-star review average. I was disappointed. It has numerous editing mistakes and the illustrations appear to be scans done on a home copier. If you are already using GB you probably know 90% of the material covered here.Wish GB for Dummies would get an update.

I believe this will work over time. I am in a patrol car for 12 hour shifts. I have played through the first CD about 3 times. Their are 3 CD's. At over 50, my retention is not that of a younger person, but I am starting to pick up on it. The knowledge is there. It is put forth in an efficient and direct manner, not a lot of hoopla. For the price, I am happy with it.

using this book to teach beginning adults at our church. Very good for listening to in the car or at home. Really like the way the Spanish speaker says words slowly and then repeats. One thing that is confusing.........switches from familiar and formal you to mainly formal. would be better to give both Ud and tu.

I spend a lot of time in my car and the CDs are great. They give my something productive to do during this time. I guess only time will tell if it actually helps with my Spanish!

I tried to listen to the CD while I was driving, and the CD seemed to go really fast. I couldn't concentrate on driving and repeating the phrases. I will just have to make time to read the book first, and listen to the CD later on, once I learn some Spanish.

listen to these cds every morning. easy to understand. I will not know how helpful they really are until I start taking my Spanish Class at school in spring.

Easy to follow and helped refresh the little Spanish I know.

This is a good introduction to some Spanish words and a few phrases, but I don't think it will get you very far in the language. If all you want is to learn 'hello', 'goodbye', or a few other basi words, it's fine. There are a lot of repeated words among the discs, so I feel that I didn't get my money's worth. It's just ok in my opinion.

As the immediate family of Edith Bouvier Beale, it is with great pleasure and pride that we present this collection of work after almost half a century of collecting dust in family archives. Following her death in 2002 our family began the heartbreaking task of putting my aunt, Little Edie's, remaining possessions in order. Nostalgic and captivated, I carefully sifted thought the contents of the boxes, suitcases, and scrapbooks that she had saved over the decades: photographs, journals, writings, poetry, sketches, and letters were packaged in small, labeled bundles (an arrangement that eventually made the publication of this collection possible), that presented an insightful chronology of Little Edie's life. Although Little and Big Edie Beale were thrust into the public's view following the release of the Grey Gardens documentary, the true story of Little Edie's life has essentially remained a mystery since the mid 1950's. In contrast to the documentary, what became strikingly clear was the love, dedication, and seeming normalcy of her privileged youth. Filled with family vacations, costume parties, soirées, fashin shows, fundraising functions, and weekly trips to the cinema, the Beale family lived a remarkably loving life within the Hamptons high society of the early 20th century. I found an astounding number of photographs, letters, and poems from her childhood, presenting quite the contrast to the cats and decrepitude of Grey Gardens during the 1970s. However, as was reflected in various letters, bank statements, and attorney correspondences, as the economic pressures of the Depression years set it, life began to change for little Edie at Grey Gardens, gradually transforming into the familiar scene of the 1970s documentary. Nonetheless, despite the Beale's steady economic decline over the course of almost half a decade, the loving and graceful writings from these years make their continued creativity, dedication to one and other, good nature, and attempt to maintain their dignity conspicuously clear. Immediately following my Aunt Edie's death, I began the arduous process of reconstructing her young life in order to compile this collection. As a close family member, I have enjoyed the privilege of having Edie's humor and wisdom in my life, and as a result this anthology was conceived with deep dedication, understanding, and personal connection. We hope this book will help see Edie differently and with a deeper appreciation of how she grew into the familiar character from the Grey Gardens documentary. We hope not to only restore her dignity, but also make known her sensitivity, passion, and genius that we, as her family, remember vividly. It was clear that Little Edie wanted her story to be shared.

If you are a fan of the Maysles Brothers movies from The Criterion Collection, and also the HBO film starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore, this is a must have.This book fills in all of the blanks of both Big Edie, and Little Edie using photographs from Their collection.If you feel as if you knew them before, this treasure trove really cements what their lives were like before The Great Depression hit, and it draws you that much closer to them.A remarkable testament to two lives that were inseparably intertwined. It will make you long to step back in time to those wonderful days gone by.

The book is good, however, I was surprised at it being just pictures and not a full story. I probably did not read all the reviews well enough. Still interesting family history.

This is a wonderful book detailing the life of "Little Edie" Beale of Grey Gardens fame. Lovely pictures and poetry written by Edie as child,her deb and post-deb years, also give a fascinating portrait of society life in the 30's 40's and 50's. There are also pictures of Phelan Beale, her father, and, of course, "Big Edie", her mother. A charming narrative as well. My only complaint is that it is a bit over-priced. Other than that, if you are a true Grey Gardens fan, you will love this beautiful tribute to a unique, individualistic and "staunch" character.

I really enjoyed all the pages, the pictures; the writings of little Edie. The book gives one a sense of what might have been.A synopsis perhaps on many of our lives that are rich with stories but we don't have the famous name or connection formost people to notice. Everyone should really see the documentary of Grey Gardens and the recent film with DrewBarrymore who did a splendid job portraying little Edie.It's a Keeper.

This is a lovely book. Sadly most, if not all of the photos are online to view. The images are large and the writing and other items shared are really fun to see.

A must for every grey garden fan, put together beautifully!

I love the variety of photos included in the book, but some of the pictures were blown up so large that they look distorted. Also, for the price of the book, you think that some of the photos would have been cleaned up a little. Some photos look like they were processed with a scratched or dirty negative and for aesthetics, could have been improved before publishing. Some of the captions also are either redundant and poorly edited, but let's be honest, it's really about the pictures! It would have been nice for some of the photos to not have been enlarged at all rather than filled a page with one large, grainy shot. Finally, most of the poetry isn't dated... it would be nice to know if it were written as a child or an adult.

What a story. Great photos. Love the book!!

This is such an important book for me, daughter of narcissists. I didn't get any self-care instruction at all, from hair brushing to making friends. Fortunately most people won't need this kind of book, but those that do really, really have a great need. Well thought out instructions, easy to understand.

I'd heard about this book for years from advice columns like Carolyn Hax's, and when I finally bought it and read parts of it, it really hit home. In fact, I'm having some trouble reading it all because it's bringing up some tough emotions! My dad was an alcoholic, and my childhood was chaotic and full of gaps in my learning -- especially of good people skills. This book seems to cover a lot of what I had to learn the hard way over the course of way too many years. I wish I'd read it in my 20s instead of my 60s! For example, how do you say no when you've been well trained to be a people pleaser? This book can help, and I highly recommend it -- especially if you're in your 20s! :)

I have only read part of it, but the suggestions are specific and easy to incorporate into daily life. It addresses the problems I am facing with solutions that are easy to do. It isn't vague, and doesn't feel like psycho-babble. I agree with the other review that said it might not be good for people with a mental illness. However, for those of us that are stable but just conditioned to walk on eggshells, this is extremely helpful.

The MAT is a very difficult test. It was more difficult than I thought. This book helped me to understand the types of questions asked on the MAT. I believe this is why I scored a 62 on the MAT(82nd Percentile) . I had two freinds who scored an 20 and a 38 who did not use the book. I found it challenging to do the practice questions, but they did help me understand what types of questions are aked.

I scored in the 95th percentile (raw score 79) on the MAT using this book as preparation. Now, either I'm a genius or this is a very good guide (there is no evidence of the former). Get this specific book before the MAT.

Readers should note that this book is geared for a 100 question, 50 minute exam, whereas the MAT is now 120 questions and takes an hour. Apparently this is has changed since this book was last printed. Having said that, this is an excellent guide to the MAT and a good preparation for those also taking the GRE. True, there's no substitute for a broad-based education, but by dusting off old history lessons and getting into the "mode" of MAT analogies you will undoubtedly do better than if you'd taken the test cold. DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED BY YOUR PRE-TEST SCORE: YOU WILL GET BETTER! I only scored a 66 on my pre-test but by the end of the book I was getting around 90% of the questions right on the first pass. The MAT itself will probably seem easier than the questions in this book. I'm assuming adrenalin has something to do with this, but I can't discount the idea that this book helped as well. As always, a first-rate Barron's product.

I used this book to prepare for the M.A.T. and it really helped me. I can directly attribute 5 points of my raw score to using this guide. One of the questions was exactly the same as on one of the pretests and the others were things that I wouldn't have refreshed my memory on if I hadn't seen them on the practice exams(Roman numerals and the Greek alphabet). I can't calculate how much better I did as a result of being familiar with the test format and types of word play questions that were on the test but this also undoubtably improved my grade. I ended up in the 94 percentile and I think this book got me into the 90th percentiles. I highly recommend it.

I strongly recommend purchasing this book. The lists in the back helped me review well. The practice tests in the book were harder than the actual test, so I felt good when I left the testing center.

I was a little nervous facing a grad school admission test after so long out of school, but the reviews on Amazon were pretty positive about this particular text. I found the pretest to be by far the hardest test in the book, and became more comfortable with the format and the analysis with each additional practice test. Ultimately, I improved my score from the pretest to the actual test by 25 raw points. Practice in spotting different forms that an analogy might take was extremely helpful to me. I finished the actual test well within the time limit, and scored > 95th %ile.

I was able to improve my score by at least twlve points. Read the book, study the vocabulary, and brush up on your humanities and you will probably improve your score. I would also recommend purchasing other MAT test prep books for the tests. Barron's however offered a great strategy for taking the test. The vocabulary list was also great help.

I always use Barron's for reviewing subject matter and they have yet to let me down. This book is wonderful. Some of the practice questions were even on the exam. Without it you won't know what to expect.

I was surprised that the book was physically small. I know that it would be a short book but I assumed that the book size was that of the typical Oxford/Rutledge university publications. The print is a size or two smaller than usual (14 point) so it is somewhat physically difficult to read. The material is presented very well and covers a lot of areas of the philosophy of law. I would gladly pay $2-3 more if the book size were to be slightly larger so the font is a typical university printing.

The Very Short Introduction... series has several advantages over other series that serve the same function of providing an introduction to a subject matter. The main advantage is physical size. Mr. Clark refers to it as the perfect "plane" book. That's true. But even better, it is a true pocket book. They fit easily into the back of one's jeans waiting for the odd moment to be pulled out and used. They can usually be easily read in a couple of hours.But that format has limitations. I find that the VSI volumes that are devoted to a single thinker are much more useful than the ones that cover a broad subject matter. (It inspires me to a bad pun. But sometimes, as with the VSI to The Philosophy of Law the treatment seems shallow. Wacks is very good on some of his thinkers: Rawls, Dworkin, Hart, Weber, and Habermas are all fairly well done. Some of the others are not as well handled- I found his treatment of Locke, Marx, Foucault to be cursory at best. It felt like a survey of a survey.So take it for what it is. This volume is a very quick overview of a lot of thinkers (see Mr. Clark's review for a good listing). Some of these thinkers are important enough to deserve their own volume in the series (Locke, Marx, and Habermas). Others like Rawls and Dworkin deserve such treatment. Prof. Wacks has provided us with a quick and cheap way to orient ourselves to future reading in this field. I just cannot help but feel that he could have done better. That if he had taken the time to flesh out his presentation for another fifty or so pages that it would have been a much more useful member of the VSI family.

The philosophy of law is one of the few fields of philosophy that have remained legitimate in the sense that practical questions and contemplations are not eschewed. Too often philosophical debate wanders into conceptual hallways that could best be described as mazes, but one cannot get to their centers even with keeping one hand on the wall. One gets forever lost in the entanglement of concepts, with nothing ever settled, and if an idea is deemed to be practical it follows that it must be uninteresting or illegitimate.But legal reasoning is a requirement for human well being, and then the question arises as to what system of concepts best encapsulates it. Many questions arise when contemplating proper philosophical frameworks for legal contemplation, and many of these are answered in this book, written of course for those readers who need a quick introduction to the subject matter. No reader would expect an in-depth discussion of the philosophy of law from this book, but there is enough in it to enable readers to investigate specialized topics of interest.The author begins the book by stating that the philosophy of law is "rarely an abstract, impractical pursuit", and he explains the (weak) demarcation between "descriptive" and "normative" legal theory. Because of its place in history, the author discusses the doctrine of natural law first, and this discussion sheds considerable light on why many modern conservatives are committed to this philosophy of law: it seems to make legitimate the social hierarchies that these conservatives insist we respect.The doctrine of legal positivism is then discussed, and in this regard the most interesting (and disconcerting) discussion is the "pure theory of law" of Hans Kelsen. The Kelsen theory is interesting since legal norms in this conception are all relational: any one particular norm must be justified or authorized by another norm, giving in the end a large hierarchy of norms with a "basic norm" sitting on top of the hierarchy and representing a completely formal or hypothetical construct. One should not view it as arbitrary though, since its selection is based on whether or not the legal order is "effective". The author does not really elaborate on this notion, but the open-ended nature of his discussion motivates the reader to investigate this doctrine in more detail through outside reading.If read in the light of current controversies in the interpretation of legal statutes by the United States Supreme Court, probably the most interesting discussion in the book concerns the legal philosophy of Ronald Dworkin. Dworkin himself is very critical of recent decisions that have been made by the Supreme Court in the last two years, but his criticisms in this regard are not brought out in this book. What is discussed is a conception of the law that seems "extralegal" in that it views legal contexts as being intertwined with moral and political ones. This makes legal reasoning more than just an application of rules, and forces the judge to consider the consequences that his edicts will have on the community.Because it is still in its infancy as a legal philosophy, considerations of jurisprudence brought about by discoveries in neuroscience are not discussed in this book. Called by some the "neuroscience of law" this branch of jurisprudence will probably not be taken seriously by the majority of legal philosophers for some time to come. This reviewer recommends the book by Brent Garland for those who want to supplement the reading of this book by considering what is at the present time very exciting developments in both neuroscience and legal philosophy.

It's a great read, incredibly detailed and full of can't-make-this-stuff-up characters and plots - my hat's off to Mr. Bernstein for weaving it together as a page-turner that kept me up late reading, and reaching for more first thing in the morning. Remarkable!

I have been slogging through this book for months wondering if the day will ever come that I read the final chapter. Like other reviewers have stated this is a fascinating subject and much overdue for exposure. Unfortunately Bernstein’s writing is so stilted and choppy the book is practically unreadable. He jumps from one sound bite to the next. It is more like a series of tweets than a book or a helpful expose. Bernstein follows a pedestrian narrative timeline: first this, then this happened. Good investigative journalism is overshadowed by a stilted play-by-play recounting of events. This book needs to be re-written.

Although the book is very informative, the writing style is a little bland. Thus, reading same can be laborious.

I work in finance and thought this would be an interesting read. Unfortunately, I found it rather boring and anti-climatic. Informative and eye-opening if you have no idea this kind of tax evasion and money laundering exists. But I struggled to stay interested.

The author, Jake Bernstein, was one of the reporters who actually worked on the Panama Papers. His book centers around the leak of those documents, the efforts of many reporters around the world to analyse and publish them with coherence and meaning, and how the whole off shore world of shady finances works. His research, detail and exposition are first class, giving essentially a graduate course on the subject. The book is so detailed, and there are so many different characters involved, that it requires careful reading, but well worth it if you are interested in the subject.

I have read the translation by Mikaeel Ahmed Smith. There were confusing portions that seemed circular with no meaning. However, this is not for beginner students/periodic readers of Islamic theology. I would have probably enjoyed this more thoroughly if I had a stronger vocabulary and knew more about this topic.Also as a side note, I feel like many of the points that this book covers are geared towards full-time students of Islamic theology. Many of these points do not apply to the average reader.I have no complaints on the book overall, but the topics it teaches do not apply to me.I have given this book 3 stars due to the fact that I couldn't apply/understand many parts of the book, but there are some parts that I understood well and have attempted to apply it to my daily life. It is very beneficial to students. My review may have been higher if I was more well-versed on the subject.JazakAllahukhairan.
