One of the most interesting things about reading this book 62 years after it was first published is to learn that many of the modern day design gurus were not the originators of a great deal of the design concepts, ideas, principles and approaches to business that they write about. Aside from some cultural differences and the Internet this book applies today.Dreyfuss's determination to research, study and learn the needs of the end user is an enduring theme and major takeaway for me.The book's margins is where Designing for People comes alive for me. The ample space, sketches and handwritten notes directing the reader to photos and points of reference are superb! I appreciate the photographs as well.If you are considering design, are a budding designer and or are just interested in design, this is a must have book.

Dreyfuss' "Designing for People" proved an inspiring collection of anecdotes and stories exemplifying the true functions of an industrial designer. Nostalgia combined with some sage-like advice, Dreyfuss reminds the designer of his or her role in the product development field. To paraphrase Dreyfuss: the industrial designer is a person who wears many hats; one who is part artist, engineer, businessman, researcher, politician, builder, and guinea pig. His assessment is accurate and proven, and his words of wisdom should be used as a guideline for all industrial designers in modern times. That said, Dreyfuss does tend to come across very matter-of-factly at times, leaving little gray area in his black and white world. As a result Mr. Dreyfuss sides with the Bauhaus approach where form follows function-indeed, he often mentions the resulting form of a product as a side-note, if he mentions it at all. Whereas this may be an annoyance for some readers, the lessons you take away from his life experiences are truly informative and insightful. As the amount of 3D design in product development grows, designers today are faced with the difficulty of "skin designing" verses thoughtful, foundation-based designing. If nothing else, this book should serve as inspiration for those of us in the field to design based on function and aesthetics-we have a duty and responsibility to client and society to base designs on research and thoughtfulness, not simply the known tools in a computer program. In any case, DFP should be on the required reading list for industrial design students to teach the history and guidelines of our profession. "Designing for People" serves as not only a reminder of the way it used to be, but it also inspires the designer to believe how it should be now.

Beautiful and inspiring book. Wonderful little drawings in the margins to add to the feeling of the creative process involved. I am a 22 year graphic designer and have always considered myself customer oriented. This book helps you see the extraordinary in what designers do in reflecting on tools we use everyday that make our lives easier, like a clock and office chairs.

A classic written by an icon - not really modern, but a wonderful insight into one of the founders of modern industrial design and his timeless principles of making things fit people.

A classic. Dreyfus was the first designer to write about how things should be designed to work they way people think they should. His work was decades before Steve Jobs and all of us User Experience people started talking about the same things.

This book is the first step in making sure that you are designing with the user in mind. Even with the age of the book the ideals of it still hold true just as much as they did then. If you have any interest in design (and know that doesn't mean just aesthetics) this is a must read.

A book written many years ago by a great industrial designer. Lots of great information which is still pertinent today.

If you don't know who Henry Dreyfus is, you should read this book. One of the great industrial designers This book, although a bit dry, shows the thought process in designing for the consumer.
