I probably have 20 sushi cookbooks, use them when I teach private sushi classes. This is a great book for any beginner, and really shows good techniques. I do not care for ring bound books but this one is fine. Good book for someone wanting to learn sushi, and no, not just rolls but how to cut fish, make rice (very important). I recommend.

I built and operated a sushi bar for 13 years, but I wasn't the chef - I was fortunate to find one of the finest people I've ever worked with in my life, a Japan-trained guy born there, but with 30 years experience in the USA after immigrating. We have had regular customers who would, literally, drive 50 miles each way for his sushi mastery (we're in a fairly rural area; people are regularly stunned to find this in such a remote location) and excellent reviews.All this is prelude to the fact that I know, love and appreciate great sushi prepared by a dedicated master of the craft. Out of respect for his training, secrets and time, I never in all that time asked my chef for any training, but I closely observed him on a number of occasions and picked up techniques, tricks and tips that way. Now that I'm back to working from home after selling the restaurant, I felt the pull of daily sushi and determined to teach myself at least the basics so I could make a few things for myself while still visiting my old chef as a customer instead of a boss.This book is "the book" as far as I'm concerned, head and shoulders above the other dozen or so that I own. The reason I mentioned all that stuff above is that I can confirm that techniques, ingredients and tips I saw being used by a master with decades of experience, starting in Japan, are in this book. A few things are missing (mostly items you may never see for sale in a sushi bar, but at home or for restaurant staff meals, like onigiri) but it's very, very complete and incredibly well illustrated with beautiful photography.If you want to learn the basics, get this book. You can learn more from a skilled chef hands-on after studying it and trying its methods, but you may never need to buy another book (well, maybe this one, incredibly fun to read even if you never make a thing: Sushi For Parties: Maki-Zushi and Nigiri-Zushi). And please, if you get serious about making sushi at home, do yourself a favor - save up and spend at least $100-200 on a quality 8-10" yanagiba knife (and eventually learn how to properly sharpen it on 1000/6000 water stones) and at least $80 (or more, depending on size) on a real Japanese Cypress hangiri - both available here at Amazon and other online stores. Good results start with good tools that will last longer than you will; these are specialty tools just for sushi/sashimi and they make a difference as you grow into them.This is an easy, wholehearted 5-star rating from me.

Speaking as a Chef and always seeking to become better and ALWAYS remaining a student. To say I was Amazed on how well this book was done would not do it justice. Every aspect of this book is so well thought out and done; that Includes the contruction and binding. Other than going to Japan to learn these skills; I don't think there is amuch better way to get your Sushi start! From Home Cook to Chef you WILL learn a lot from these Holy pages! If you have never made sushi, this is a great beginner's guide. Shoot, it's great even if you have made sushi before. It's very informative and easy to follow. Lot's of picture instructions!

I've been making my own sushi for several years. Mostly I just try to mimic what I've eaten at restaurants or recipes I've seen online. I have a small book that came with my sushi mats, but it didn't have much info in it. This book has so much great information. I literally read it from cover to cover. I plan to use the techniques and improve my sushi!

I needed to become accustomed to 19th Century writing in the beginning of the first novella but once I did, all three of them flowed. The stories were both heartbreaking and extremely "modern" classic tales of life in the English countryside; they are stories we're all familiar with, even today. If I'd had to read them when I was in high school, I'm sure I wouldn't have liked them; I certainly wouldn't have 'gotten them'.However, as an adult "of a certain age", they resonate with what life is for so many of us. Ups and downs, people and personalities we've known, tragic events, all of the disappointments we experience...they're all here and remind me that there's really nothing new under the sun. George Elliot wrote her novels with compassion and a voice that still speaks to us today.

I realize that great Victorian novels are to some degree an acquired taste. To lovers of the genre, George Eliot stands out as perhaps its finest writer. Scenes of Clerical Life does not disappoint in this regard. The book is actually three books in one, each following a different character in their spiritual growth and worldly trials. Amos Barton, Maynard Gilfil, and Janet Dempster are indelible characters who endure believable tragedies. I found the story of Janet Dempster particularly inspiring. Janet is a battered wife who becomes an alcoholic to dull the pain of her life. Through a long and detailed personal and spiritual struggle, she learns forgiveness and not incidentally overcomes her alcoholism.I highly recommend Scenes of Clerical Life.

I am a passionate George Eliot fan. I really enjoy Victorian era literature, and George Eliot is one of my favourite Victorian writers, so much so that I did my thesis for my Honours degree on three of her novels - Mill on the Floss, Daniel Deronda and Middlemarch. I found Scenes of Clerical Life to be quite different to these novels - a set of three nouvellas loosely linked rather than the complex plots of her big novels. I enjoyed the strong sense Eliot conveyed of some of the pettiness and power struggles that dominate a small village, and the many ways curates are used as pawns by various villagers. I remember being told by one of my lectures at University that one of the characteristics of Victorian Literature is that it focuses on the individual and his/her role within society, whereas modern literature tends to be solipsistic and driven by the individual desires of the central character. That is certainly the case with this book. I particularly enjoyed the first story where Eliot's marvellous descriptive powers painted a strong, clear picture of the setting and village life. It made me realise how challenging life is for clergy who are not wealthy and have the right connections.Those not used to Victorian writing may find the pace a bit slow and some of the physical descriptions long-winded, but once you get used to that style and persevere, the rewards are considerable. George Eliot uses metaphor and imagery so effectively. A delightful little gem.

I found Scenes from a Clerical Life a sad tale well told. It helped that had some background on Eliot's religious experience which explains her attitude towards Amos Barton. My copy of Scenes also contained Mr. Gilfil's Love Story, and Janet's Repentance. I thought both Gilfil and Janet were more enjoyable stories with a somewhat lighter tone. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in literature of this era.

I really liked the first two stories: Amos Barton & Mr. Gilfil's Love Story. The 3rd, Janet's Repentance, gets long-winded and moralistic in the second half of the story. I couldn't wait for it to end. I've read that these 3 stories are the earliest fiction George Eliot published. A good start and of course her later novels are splendid.

Read this for the language. The plots suffer from the sentimentality found in so many great 19C novels. Eliot draws you into pastoral English life and observes the scenes there with images that cannot be found in weaker fiction of the kind. There is a delightful description of vicar Barton by his fire with pipe and gin, enjoying the contrasting wet and dry. Her language here holds you, stops the reader and forces him to sigh. These stories are full of wonderful insights and descriptions, and these are what hold the reader. Of course, it should be understood that Eliot will not be read by anyone much amused by pop/tv culture. If only we could be entertained by tv we wouldn't have to put effort into our rewards.

So easy to enjoy stories by a wonderful writer as George Eliot. Not my usual genre, but so well done, so beautifully capturing a time in the past and emotions of "everyman," that I didn't want to stop reading.

To this day I remember waiting in line for some hours or more to simply walk through one of the first 747's that was on a National tour and parked on the tarmac at Greater Southwest International Airport half way between Dallas and Ft. Worth in the late 1960's. Accepting the enormity of the aircraft was somewhat difficult even when seeing it and walking through it. With it's double aisles and four distinct passenger cabin areas it's spaciousness was really overwhelming. The next versions of double aisle jet liners, the DC-10, L-1011 and B767 all were introduced some years later. The first scheduled 747 commercial flights by Pan Am to London began in the Summer of 1970. Personally my first 747 flight was on an Air France version nonstop from Chicago O'Hare to Paris de Gaulle in the mid 1970's. Since that time I have been fortunate to fly the 747 many times, but, the thrill of travel on this aircraft never became jaded. And initially the development of the 747 was almost an afterthought. When Boeing lost the competition for the design and construction of a large military transport plane to the Lockheed C5A-Galaxy, their design for that U.S. Government specification was the basis for the upper cockpit and for the lower front to back passenger cabin. The Queen reigned for more than thirty-five years before the development and entry into service of the A-380 in 2007. This book details the story of the creation of the 747.

A good easy read about Joe Sutter and the 747. I'd seen a few documentaries about the genesis of the 747 and Joe was in most of them. He lays it all out in the book and details the struggle to keep the project moving forward while fighting off upper management's cost cutting efforts, others trying to get him replaced as the lead, and trying to satisfy the customer. He was interesting to listen to as a man in his 90s when he recalled the story in the documentaries, but I can only imagine what he must have been like in his prime when doing battle in his arena. Glad to have it in my library.

.This book is authored by Joe Sutter and Jay Spenser and chronicles Sutter's life and the development of the 747 from Sutter's perspective as chief engineer. I recently watched a special on Boeing where Sutter was briefly interviewed and discussed the recent entry of the Boeing 787 into commercial service. Below are two observations and five excerpts from the book that I found valuable from a leadership perspective.ObservationsA. Sutter was a believer in simple and not afraid to try different things. It is amazing to know he cut out paper airplane engines and moved them around a line drawing of a 737 as part of the process that established engine location for the 747.B. Even at Sutter's high status and power level negative politics are a fact of life and must be dealt with. He provided examples of unwanted help he had to take, unrealistic deadlines and people trying to take over his roles and responsibilities.Excerpts from the book1. By far the biggest lesson I learned from the 737 was never to take an initial design configuration as a given. It's human nature to do just that and go charging ahead to work within an existing framework... Engineers love to dive right in and analyze the hell out of reams of data. Very often though, they can't see the forest for the trees because they haven't done the simple work up front to be sure they are starting down the right path... The more brain power you apply up front, the greater the likelihood that you'll find the design path that solves your challenges and meets your customers' requirements... If I made an individual contribution, it was my insistence that we take stock before charging out of the starting blocks.2. I let my people run with the ball and made sure to give credit where it was due. I also strove to communicate well. On the 747 program, I was the one making the decisions--I'm not a consensus guy--but I generally did so only after hearing everybody out with an open mind.3. Real leadership means having the courage to do what you know is right. (This always sounds easier than it is and Sutter provides some examples of high pressure situations where he did this)4. If we had differences, I made sure we resolved them on the spot.5. ...I realized that all of us on that incredibly complex and demanding program were so close to our own problems that we probably couldn't see the forest for the trees. I decided to fix that... I worked hard to keep my 747 engineering team as broadly informed as myself. Sitting in on their meetings or visiting their locales for impromptu gatherings, I covered the sales picture, our engineering challenges and successes, pertinent events inside and outside the company... I saw the role of the manager isn't simply to pass out instructions; it is also to inform... people need to know where they stand. I believe all practinoners need this book, I learned so much about the moon and time. Very informative, no nonsense fluff.

I love this book so much I carry it everywhere with me to reference back too. The spells are simple and straight forward. This is such an easy read. I also love the addition she added with the Chinese birth chart and the numerology chart. It’s not major but a preview in to the numerology. I love this book I can’t say how pleased I am. I will be purchasing more as gifts as this book has given me a lot of compliments from my spiritual friends about it. It’s a really good read and I recommended to everyone who is wanting to learn shiny the moon and when to cast simple spells for the moon phase. I’m very satisfied

It works. I don't know how to explained this. Story short, our house was previously 1 year ago apprised at 380. In order for us to get a loan we needed the house to come back at least...at least 400K. Everything was in place the loan pre-approved but nothing matter if the house value did't hit the mark. we dreaded the news for almost a MONTH! nothing happening, nothing moving. In desperation I applied for another personal loan not with the bank. I knew my chances of qualifying were slim. I did it anyway. I applied on a Wednesday. I performed the prosperity spell on the following Thursday. I am without words. the same day I received a call for my personal loan that they approved me...wow...later, HOURS later I received an email from the bank letting me know that the appraisal CAME BACK at 445,000!!!!!!!!!!!! what??? I though it was a mistake, so I called. Nope, the email was correct the appraisal came back at 445. OMG! ps.. I screw up on the spell so much, gosh I lighten the wrong candles exit thru the South instead of the West, I forgot the my wallet. BUT! my intention was so CLEAR that it did not made a difference. And for all that I have received I am truly grateful!!

I ordered this along with Light is the New Black and the Soul Searchers Handbook. It's on the shelf with those two and I reference it often. It's got sections for each type of spell and outlines everything you need. I've tried a few things from it and have had some success. Also, the spells are super easy to follow and none of the ingredients are particularly hard to find. I love this little book. I find myself looking through it for fun sometimes because I like all of the information packed into it. I especially love that it adds in some light info about moon phases, zodiac signs, numerology, and things like that. It's such a cute book. I don't know why I didn't go ahead and get it sooner.

If your new to spells or moon rituals this really gives everything you need to know. I loved it and had to get a book copy to because it's definitely one I'll be using often and referencing back to. Thank You!!

When I first cracked open this book, I was surprised by the intelligent writing, which seems to be lacking in other books on this topic. After reading a few pages, I learned quite a bit and I'm quite experienced in the craft myself. When I reached the spell section I knew this was a 5-star book. She didn't overly focus on love spells as other books do. The variety was amazing as well as the uniqueness of the spells themselves. A lot of these spells were for emotional or spiritual help. If you are a beginner these spells would be good to start with but they don't provide room for growth. However, as a person who started by using more direct spells these were a nice refresher. FInally, an attribute I look for in books is how refrencable they are. These books definitely meet that standard. Add this to your library!

Arrived quickly and with no damage. A nice start for beginners to learn how to use the moon phases in spells and magick. It's not too overwhelming for those just starting the Craft. Definitely recommend!!

I love this spell book. The supplies needed are pretty reasonable. I love how it has the moon phases and what days they fall on. Basically everything you need to perform a moonspell of any sort.

This was hard to rate. It was an interesting read and I liked parts of it, but I was VERY disappointed in the amount of made up stuff in this book. It is supposedly a "True Story", but about 1/2 way through the book I began to realize there is no way some of this stuff happened and I found outright errors (e.g. the U.S. won't extradict any US citizen? Wrong!) By the end I was wondering which parts were true, and that really reduced my enjoyment overall. I Feel Like I was Conned Too. I did some googling and found that Mr. Abagnate even states/admits that many things were exaggerated by the co-writer and he wished that were not done. I believe that there are a lot of things that really happened in this book, but also a lot of things that are totally made up. (And some obvious sections where the co-author had go back and write a supplimental paragraph because a logical error was found in the draft. Not a smooth cover job.) Anyway, it would have been great without the made up stuff. Then I wouldn't wondered how much I had been suckered.

Frank W. Abagnale deserves all the praise we can give him. After a bad beginning, he went to jail and paid for his fraudulent activities from age 16 to 20. Then, he turned around. He began to work with the FBI on revealing fraud. He started his own business and is now a millionaire, helping the FBI, private businesses and people to discover fraud. This is important for the elderly especially and he works with the AARP. He makes presentations sponsored by the AARP in various cities. He talks about his life (now at age 70) and gives good advise to AARP members on avoiding fraud and scams. Anyone can order his books from Amazon and gain considerable knowledge for their own good. I was privileged to be at a recent presentation he made in Las Vegas, Nevada. The people just loved him! AND SO DID I! Thank you, Amazon, for being a most reliable on-line center for finding what we are looking for.

"This book is based on the true-life exploits of Frank Abagnale. To protect the rights of those whose paths have crossed the author's, all of the characters and some of the events have been altered, and all names, dates, and places have been changed."This warning on the the copyright page of Catch Me if You Can should serve as a warning that this is actually a work of fiction, not "The True Story of a Real Fake." This is a case where the book isn't any better rooted in reality than the movie. Like the Little House books, it's a riveting read--but shouldn't be marketed as non-fiction or biography. Among the duplicities in the book:- "When Mom finally divorced my father, I elected to live with Dad." In numerous recorded speeches, Frank says that he ran away the instant he found out his parents were getting divorced. Literally, the last time his father saw him was running out of Family Court.- "Ten minutes before the pilot was to make his landing approach, I rose and strolled back to one of the lavatories and locked myself inside." In his speeches, Frank blames the 'toilet' scene on the movie scriptwriters, claiming he actually escaped through the galley.- He never mentions (although the movie does) that he went directly from prison to working for the FBI (which he has continued to do to this day). All the stuff about him not being able to get a job due to his criminal record was apparently put in the book to conceal that he was an FBI undercover agent during his early years in the FBI, continuing to impersonate and con people, but this time with the government's aid and approval.

Catch Me If You Can is an interesting story documenting a five year crime stint like no other. He was the ultimate con man with balls of steel and he impersonated a pilot, a doctor, a teacher - while bilking banks out of millions of dollars. Having seen the movie, the book is quite different...as is often the case. However, it kept me engaged and was a very worthwhile read.

My copy of this book is through Audible books version. Let me first say that the narration was very well done and with a good pace. I quickly found myself wanting to get back to the story while driving or taking walks. I was familiar with the story line because of the movie, which I always say is perhaps the only DiCaprio movie that I really enjoyed his acting. The book has little to say about the FBI agent assigned to catch him and ended w/o reference to his post-criminal career. In fact, it ends with yet another of his clever means of evading capture.As far as whether all that he wrote, or had written for him, was true is frankly not my concern. It's not like I'm using his ideas for my own life. It doesn't diminish my enjoyment of the book whether he was at serious risk of entering Italian prisons as stated in the book or if he actually had all the sexual escapades. It's a good story and that's really all that's important. What I found most interesting is that while listening, I'm rooting for him to escape and pull off his cons. I don't like criminals, but he was fun. If you are wanting a story that is based on reliable truth or if you abhor criminal behavior, then I wouldn't recommend this book. But if you are just wanting a good and fun read, then Catch Me... remains and thoroughly engrossing book.

The book was hard to put down. I found myself wondering how he figured out his cons and admiring him for his boldness. Then I empathized with his loneliness. We have one thing in common, we both come from a broken home and I felt his pain. Truly a great read. I would like to meet Mr Abignale.

This book was well written and well edited. It was fastenating to read of all of Frank's experiences. You really get the idea that crime does not pay when he gets thrown into that French jail. His imagination was incredible. This was an easy read, but I did have to look up a few words to see their meaning. Read it, you just might enjoy it.

About the Author

Retired art educator Peter Hiller has collected native cultural materials since his youth; this volume is comprised primarily of his vintage postcards, photographs, and select artworks. Hiller curates the Jo Mora Trust Collection. Ann Lane Hedlund is a cultural anthropologist who collaborates with native weavers and other visual artists.
