This is a one-day read - maybe two. It's not worth $14. It is written for accessibility, which I am taking to mean a 6th-grade level.It's basically a Q&A book supposedly drawing 90% upon St. Thomas Aquinas, but there are few references to Aquinas's works. Kreeft has some silly questions in the book. I suspect these questions came from the undergraduate course he teaches on Angels and Demons.If you're looking for a higher-level, more intellectual read, get Angels and Demons: A Catholic Introduction, by Serge-Thomas Bonino OP. It's available on Amazon. It's a far denser read, but it is not disjointed like Kreeft's book.I was disappointed by the text as it is too simplistic. But some may prefer simple.

The market is flooded with books on angels, many whimsical and speculative, others recounting meetings between angels and humans, and some even claiming to tell you how to talk to your angel. We have angel dictionaries and angel encyclopedia, books filled with great paintings, and others with personal angel art. This book is for those who want to ponder what Scripture tells us about angels, and what the great theologian, Thomas Aquinas, had to say about God's messengers as well. For those of us interested in the real root of the fascination, this is a treasure trove. Anyone can dream dreams of angels; anyone can make up stories about them. Anyone can draw his or her ideal winged guardian. But pondering the actual biblical passages that involve angels can be very surprising and inspiring, as this is where the real beginning of our understanding of angels resides. Like all Peter Kreeft's many books, this one is very readable. It's clear, concise, and will lead inevitably to the Bible itself. After all, that is where we first meet our angels, in the pages of the Old and New Testaments; and it may surprise readers to discover how much the Bible actually tells us about these mysterious and powerful creatures. I should add here that I find Thomas Aquinas endlessly fascinating, but difficult. And after reading Peter Kreeft's book, it was much easier for me to approach The Summa Theologica for the many intricate passages on angels bad and good. Peter Kreeft is a great teacher. This book captivates and instructs.

While I am not Catholic, I am researching every source for different perspectives on the subject. This book is quite readable with excellent information. I keep quoting different things from it when making points! The excellent bibliography has lead me to some other gems I would not have considered as part of my research. I usually get most books from the library, but ended up purchasing this one.

Anyone who has read any of Peter Kreeft's books knows that he does not write to the arrogant academic elite but to the common adult (including "young adults"). In particular, the audience of this book is to Catholics, old or young, who wish to learn more about angels. More broadly, he writes to all Christians (and even Jews and Muslims); there are a couple of places where he explains doctrines that non-Catholics might be confused about.The book is in question and answer style, 100 questions divided into four sections. The first section is "Questions about Our Fascination with Angels" (4 questions), the second is "Questions about How We Know Anything about Angels" (13 questions), the third section is "Questions about the Nature of Angels" (66 questions), and the fourth section is "Questions about Demons" (17 questions). There are also three appendices: "A Short Course in Angelistic Philosophy," "A Snakebite Letter: Sex and the Media" (Kreeft's "Snakebite Letters" are his updated version of C.S. Lewis' "Screwtape Letters"), "What the New Catechism of the Catholic Church Says about Angels," and "Angels and Demons in the Bible."My only complaint is that he usually does not cite his sources (eg. Bible, Summa Theologica, etc.) As a student, I would have liked have been able to follow up on what he says.In short, as with most of Kreeft's works, he inspires a certain excitement for Christ and His Church.

Being a firm believer in angels & demons I was keen to read this book to get a stronger theological basis to support my beliefs. Kreeft's book delivered it perfectly.The book is based around a series of 100 questions that people have asked him about the existence of angels and demons. Some are sincere but some ridiculous (eg, Can angels become cars?) but the hilarity of some only adds to the enjoyment in reading the book. Kreeft has obviously studied wide and varied to arrive at his well constructed responses.A very good reference book that anyone looking to better understand the supernatural world of angels and demons should read.

Found this book at my local library. I started reading it on a Sunday afternoon and expected to get through maybe 10 pages. Well, I read it cover to cover. I found it to be so interesting that I could not put it down.The book is written in a Question/Answer format, which for this type of material was perfect. The answers are clear and concise and perfect in length. Each answer is complete, but doesn't go overboard in anyway. Short and to the point, leaving the reader comfortable with each answer, and in my case, 100% more informed. Sometimes authors can get too wrapped up in wordy answers. Not the case with Peter Kreeft. Each answer is understandable and perfect in length.I agree with other reviewers, today's culture and society has really skewed the facts about angels and what the bible has said about them. I wasn't looking for quotes from movies or ideas & fluff from fairy tales - I wanted real, factual answers and this book has them.I really liked Peter Kreeft's writing style and will be looking for more of his books in the future.

About the Author

Lewis Hyde was born in Boston in 1945 and studied at both Minnesota and Iowa universities. His hugely acclaimed essay, "Alcohol and Poetry: John Berryman and the Booze Talking," in part sprang out of his experiences as an alcoholism counselor, but he is also a highly regarded poet in his own right whose poetry and essays have been widely published. He is a MacArthur Fellow, a former director of creative writing at Harvard and, alongside The Gift, he is the author of the equally acclaimed Trickster Makes This World. Lewis Hyde's latest version of "The Gift" is clearly a Masterpiece for human beings trapped and hypnotized by the modern world of commerce. It historically traces the differences between Commerce & Gift giving. It is not what we ordinary folks expect. Full of surprises and a must for any writer of fiction. It reveals the mystery of accessing the Creative Spirit within us all.

Deserves a constellation of stars. I have read this book many times, and just recently read it again, and it is even better than I remembered. There is now an entire literature on the relationship between a gift economy and a market economy, spawned in part by work of Jacques Derrida and others in the higher reaches of theology (e.g. the grace of God as a gift). But this book was in there first, is still better to my mind, full of sudden insight, easy to read, beautifully written, life changing. The amusing thing is that the author is under the impression that it is about artists: that is a tiny fraction of its insight -- it is really an attack on the entire world view in which we operate, and opens up whole ranges of spiritual understanding. A well run society would send a free gift copy to everyone.

This book is a heavily laden, academic, text that has very little to do with the creative process and more to do with the intellectual aptitude of the author. This book is rather an expose on the meanderings and idealizations of academic thought rather than a narrative on creativity and the product of those efforts.

This is the classic book taking a look at the history, tradition types, and deeper meaning behind the act of gifting. It is a great asset to creative people looking to get in touch with a deeper sense of meaning when it comes to presenting their work to their audience, strangers, people of importance and people close to them.The book was hard to read for me because even though it is an important work, it spoke of a subject I was entirely unfamiliar with, and as I reread it, I realized a whole bunch of us are unfamiliar with a great and almost lost aspect of culture going back thousands of years. "It is an assumption of this book that art is a gift, not a commodity."Hyde opens his treatise on the nature of Art as a gift with anthropological studies of gift exchange coupled with folklore. The diverse sources provide an excellent depiction of the two economies in which the artist (and her art) must participate. One economy is the visible, capitalistic one of which we are all aware in a daily, accounting-ledger way. This is the economy of commerce, and Hyde traces the origins of capitalistic wealth and usury, plumbing the disconnect between the "evergreen value" of art and the banal "exhaustible" value of capitalistic wealth. In opposition is the second economy, that of the gift. The gift economy is spiritual in nature, and the primary difference between it and commercial economy is that grasping at or hoarding a gift destroys the gift economy. The gift must move to participate in the economy, and many of the folktales illustrate that treating a gift as a commodity results in loss, sorrow, or even death.Perhaps understanding how opposed such an economy is to our (Western) way of coalescing and amassing fortunes, Hyde provides a modern day example of the gift economy: Alcoholics Anonymous. In AA, the newcomer is taught that to keep the gift of sobriety, she must someday pass the gift of her hope, strength and experience to someone else. Like the gifts in the various anthropological studies, the value of the AA teachings are in the sharing of them, to wit the AA saying, "You have to give it away to keep it." In terms of an artist and her art, however, issues become blurry because there is the persistent need of the artist to clothe, feed, and shelter herself. If art is to be her living, how can she avoid killing the divinity of the gift and still traffic in it as a commodity? Hyde proposes that the artist must split herself into two modes of interacting with the different economies. Whitman and Ezra Pound are presented as cases studies of (somewhat) modern artists encountering the modern world impinging on their gifts. Whitman, it seems, stayed truer to his gift whereas some unnamed disappointment led Pound to pervert his gift into a hateful ideology. Hyde's point here is that the artist, much like the ill-fated daughters of the opening folktale, will be damaged if he does not find a way to be true to his gift - despite all societal pressure to the contrary. A lost artist is one who cannot fulfill the gift by giving their art away, or who twist their art to some other purpose . This doesn't mean an artist must never accept money for her work, but that she must maintain the purity of her pursuit of producing and sharing the gift separate from her pursuit of money.How to do this, how to create and earn a living without subverting the nature of the gift? Hyde doesn't answer the question of how to preserve the gift in the modern world. Instead, he illustrates why it is imperiled by modern commerce. The epilog describes some common solutions for artists, including a long section on the rise and fall of American patronage (hint: it owes much to the Cold War). This section is the only place where the book, which was originally published in 1983, shows its age by failing to address the mechanism of crowdfunding. The employ of an agent is another common solution to the problem of working in two economies; the agent handles the commerce economy, thus freeing the artist to remain exclusively in the realm of the gift. The vast majority of modern artists, though, have solved the problem of money by having a "second job." As a writer myself, I love that Hyde puts the emphasis on the secondary nature of doing anything that is not a direct effort towards my gift and craft. THE GIFT: CREATIVITY AND THE ARTIST IN THE MODERN WORLD is a thought-provoking read for those who seek an understanding of the unseen forces that can cultivate or kill an artist's gift.

I liked the book overall and there were many good points established by the author regarding the overall concept of the artist producing their works as gifts instead of material commodities. Many thorough examples of the applications of the author's thematic approach and also highlights how artists in the past have led parallel lives along the same concept that the author tries to invoke. Although, there are a few points in the book which I struggled with understanding or perhaps have a difference of opinion regarding the views of the author I feel in summation that the book has changed my opinions on the way artistic works are produced and how they should be viewed by a society driven by material wealth and conspicuous consumption.

Beautifully written, thought-provoking history of humankind's struggle with culture, possessions, commerce, through the annals of religion, societal mores, and how it applies to all of our lives, especially the arts. Second Edition: The book is the single best resource for the Microsoft 70-697 exam. The text compliments Pluralsight, CBT Nuggets and Kaplan IT. Not an easy book to write due to the quantity of new material and the fact that Windows 10 changes on a regular basis. Regarding the competition that I don’t like, Boson Labs (which used to be good) was a big disappointment. An even bigger disappointment was the Measure Up practice exam – don’t even consider it. Suggestions for Exam Ref 70-697: tweak the editing, it could be better. Produce a new edition every year in an attempt to keep up with Windows 10.

This is good for if you already have the basics. Does go over many topics on the exam.

Its just a reference book not much of detail in it any ways they Microsoft are retiring this exam

My 10 Favorite Examples from this Book The 6th edition of JavaScript: The Definitive Guide includes 125 examples that you can view and download from from examples.oreilly.com/9780596805531/ or from github.com/davidflanagan/javascript6_examples These are ten of my favorites from the book. Note that many of these use new features of ES5 or of HTML5, and will only work in the newest browsers: 1) Example 1-1 is is an extended example in the first chapter of the book, intended to show readers a simple but non-trivial example of JavaScript. This is the loan calculator example from the last edition, but made much more interesting with the addition of client-side graphics, localStorage, and Ajax. 2) Example 9-7 emulates Java-style enumerated types in JavaScript. It demonstrates that JavaScript's prototype-based inheritance is so flexible that factory methods can be normal object factories or even class factories. That example is a little clearer if you look at the code in Example 9-8. 3) Example 9-16 defines a class hierarchy of abstract and concrete Set classes. This one is a favorite because it involves data types and API design. Chapter 9 includes a number of other Set examples, too. 4) Example 9-23 demonstrates the ES5 Object.defineProperty() method and defines a convenient way to inspect and modify the attributes of the properties of an object. It may not be practical, but I think it is a beautiful hack. 5) Example 15-10 is a simple stream-like API wrapped around the innerHTML property of an element. When you're generating text (a table, for example) for display it is sometimes easier to pass each chunk that you compute to a write() method than it is to concatenate it all together and set it on innerHTML. 6) Example 21-03 is an analog clock implemented as an SVG graphic with scriptable hands. I love client-side graphics, and this is a favorite of mine because making the hands rotate is so simple with SVG transforms. 7) Example 21-06 draws a fractal Koch snowflake using the tag. I like it because it draws the same line over and over again, but uses transformations to make the line appear at different locations, orientations and sizes. 8) Example 21-13 is another graphical example: it draws sparklines (edwardtufte.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=0001OR). This one is a favorite just because sparklines are so cool. 9) Example 22-1 uses the HTML5 geolocation API to find out where you are then uses the Google Maps API to obtain a static map of your location. I like it because geolocation (via wifi networks) is just pure magic! 10) Example 22-15 is a long example that demonstrates the IndexedDB API. I like it because the idea of a client-side database in a web browser is crazy and cool. This is a good Javascript book for ES5. However, ES5 is years out of date. ES6 is from 2015. This book was written back in 2011. A lot has changed in the Javascript world since then. Just one example. This book was written before promises.The author is a good writer, perhaps even a great writer. In addition, the author certainly knows JavaScript quite well. However, I am writing this review in 2018. The book reflects the state of the art in 2011. A lot has changed in the JavaScript world since 2011. Of course, ES6 (or later) is now the standard. However, JavaScript frameworks have come to dominate the JavaScript world. The author does provide some information about jQuery. However, even the jQuery information is from 2011. These days, React, Boostrap, Ember, Vue, Angular, etc. are highly influential.If the author, published a new version of this book, updated to ES6/7/8 and with more information about JavaScript frameworks, I would recommend it. At this point I can not recommend a book from 2011.

I simply wanted to say how much David's book has meant to my learning and understanding of Javascript, and programming in general. I had initially tried learning through many free sources online, and while most were very good in tackling specific issues or illustrating solutions to esoteric problems, none gave me the confidence that I was getting a solid foundation in the language, or programming in general.In search of something better, I looked to stackoverflow which constantly recommended David's book. To be honest, I pirated it first. But after the first 3 chapters I went straight to Amazon and bought it, as well as Javascript Patters from Stoyan and Douglas's Crockford book Javascript: the good parts (another big hit on the stackoverflow forums). I was dumbfounded at how easy and clear his book made the language. For the first time, ideas were presented in a logical order, with concepts obviously introduced to build on previous ones. Concepts I've been told are essential (hoisting, closures, etc) but were intimidating because I'd never seen them in a cohesive narrative, shocked me in how intuitive they actually were when written well and paired with succinct examples.I know this all seems overzealous enough to border on the insincere, but for someone who always had a passion for technology and wanted to create his own, but was beginning to be deterred from it all because I thought it was simply above my grasp, I want to say thank you to David and O'Reilly.They very may well have single-handedly created a new developer, and have dramatically changed my life in the process.Thanks again.

I've been a professional web developer for 18 years and have always read every JavaScript book, blog, post and ebook I could find. A junior web developer on staff asked me if I could recommend a good JavaScript book. I recommended Maintainable JavaScript by Nicholas Zakas, JavaScript Patterns by Stoyan Stefanov and this David Flanagan gem as the first priority and gave it as a welcome aboard gift. I don't care how good at Googling JavaScript questions you are, if you read this book cover to cover, you'll keep thinking, "I didn't know you could do that!" I highly recommend it to web devs of any level.

I am very familiar with O'Reilly books and have quite an extensive collection. So I have gotten used to the general writing style and layout of most of their books despite almost every book being written by a different author.This book however, despite on the back stating "Prior Programming Experience Recommended", proceeds for most of the book explaining things that someone with prior experience should already know. Also, if you plan on reading this book in a linear fashion to learn JS and avoid missing something by skipping around in the book, you might get very frustrated like I did.The author explains subjects and gives examples and then many times right afterwards says something similar to "This example contains code or functions that will be explained in a later section."Also, many people will be buying this guide to do Client-Side JS...ie. in a browser on a webpage. This book doesn't get to that until almost halfway through the book...like 300 pages.Despite these flaws, the book is EXTREMELY comprehensive. Certainly something to keep on your desk or readily handy if you program in JS often.

If you want to learn JavaScript from the ground up, and have a solid foundation, this is the book.JavaScript: The Good Parts is ok, and Effective JavaScript is quite good too, but for a good foundation of JS, I'd still read this book first.

This book didn't teach me the power of JavaScript closures , its functional idiom nor did it demystify the elusive "THIS" object. But there's something that makes it very close to my heart. Like Peter, I was washing my fishing net, ready to quit JavaScript for good when a simple statement in chapter 13 turned things around: I did not know where to embed DOM- manipulating scripts in a web page. I usually mistakenly placed them inside the head tag, so they always misfired before the document was ready. Don't laugh, this was the greatest speed bump I experienced in JS. Now, I can place my program anywhere in the page. Many will agree with me that chapter 15 is the holy of hollies in this book. Master it and you can query any node in the page, inject and delete nodes on the fly. And that is javascript's destiny. Here and there, the author draws attention to how to write cross-browser codes, skill that is a matter of life or death in production. For reference, this is arguably the JavaScript book you will consult first before heading to the stackoverflow. As dynamic as javascript's evolution is, the author keeps good record of its reincarnations, birthmarks and scars inflicted by the holy wars among browsers.

Fantastic for beginners to the visual arts. If you have a trained eye - as in, you were explained this in art school about how to look through viewfinders, how to think about contours and forms - then don't buy it, you already know this. I bought it for a class and didn't even have to read it b it was so basic. But yeah, beginners, buy away. It's a real introduction into sight and doesn't give you the cheap and easy route to art, aka drawing circles and and building up, but a real understanding.

Everything about the book was wonderful and because of this book I know a little about art.

Very condensed, dry, technical and not well organized. It didn't help me much to broaden my horizons. However, the comparison of the two crucifictions was interesting and I wish there was more of that.

Interesting, accesible and ultimately enlightening but inclined also to be dry in an "Idiot's guide" kind of way, this renders the topic a little lack lustre which for me detracts from the point of veiwing art and getting any kind of personal, emotional experience from it. Excellent for making art accesible nonetheless and demystifying the nonsense that art glitterarty types surround the topic in so needlessly and prentiontiously.

I found this book to present a good introduction to understanding the visual arts. It covers painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and architecture. In regard to these it addresses materials, techniques and theoretical aspects. This covers a great deal of territory so in 158 pages it is necessarily a very cursory presentation. The techniques and materials sections are dry, but that is the nature of the subject. It would take a real poet to make the preparation of etching plates exciting to read about, but that is usually not what is called for. The parts of the book I found most interesting were the more theoretical, analytical and philosophical ones. It begins with analyzing works, focusing on the immediate experience of seeing them - understanding what the experience is and how the work creates this experience. This covers formal(aesthetic)considerations and content(subject)of the works. There is an interesting section about the way artists think - how they are influenced by other artists and society at large and by their own circumstances and how their personal character is reflected in their work. There is also a section "The Eye and the Mind" about the relationship between the observed perceptions and the mental concepts of the artist and the many, often paradoxical, ways these have been made manifest in the works.Unlike many books dealing with art theory this one is not dogmatic and there are ample images to illustrate the points being made. Two things that make this a rather unusual and pleasant art book.
