I bought it as a birthday present for my son to replace his old outdated Atlas. We still enjoy using paper maps sometimes rather than relying on the internet. It's beautiful and useful but oh so heavy!

Donna Moore is to be commended on writing her story about her cancer and the positive way she faced it throughout her ordeal. I also bought this book for my wonderful daughter, Pam, who is fighting neuroendocrine cancer of the lung, with cancer cells also going to her brain. Pam also has been so positive throughout he past 2 1/2 years. She still gets chemo infusions at MD Andersen, Gilbert, AZ, on a regular basis. Through the love of God, her wonderful husband and teenage daughters, prayers from friends and family, and Pam’s positive attitude, we also will be SURVIVORS!

I don't remember when I've read a book so quickly and completely. I'm not a reader and although I have many friends who have written their stories about their cancer journeys, this is the first book I've read from start to finish in two days. Donna's writing style is so natural and sincere with humor and pathos sprinkled throughout perfectly. Just when the tears are welling she lightens the mood with her uncanny observations. What I most enjoyed is her ability to share her love of God and her sincere belief that tomorrow is not her business. She demonstrates her love for God in how she loves her family and friends. It is not surprising to me that she has survived her cancers. God clearly wanted her to tell her story and to inspire others to live life with love...with God's love. Thank you, Donna, for finding your 2nd Act.

When I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. Most of us know that cancer is a rollercoaster ride that no human should be put through, and this author takes you through the ups and downs of one of the worst types of cancer there is. I learned that in addition to the treatments and medications you have to go through, it's most-often your mind that helps you get through something terrible. Setting a truly positive attitude, getting your friends and family involved, having faith in God, and saying no, you're not getting me, were some of the tools she used to survive this cancer.This author's ability to take on a "nasty-ass" cancer and have a little fun with it is extraordinary! During her hospital stays, coming up with candy days, balloon days, favorite dog visits, and several other methods to help keep the positive spirit going, and getting her doctors and nurses involved in much of it was pure genius.I laughed, I cried, I was occasionally shocked, but after reading this book I now have a better understanding of how to deal with this disease; hit it head on! A must-read for anyone who is going through, or is about to go through a battle with cancer or any life-threatening disease.

Donna teaches us how to traverse a frightening and foreign terrain with simple steps and techniques to consciously manage the fears, challenges, emotions, and decisions with a scary diagnosis. The final review here is actually of the final Harry Potter book, where Hitchens, whilst generally kind and acknowledging that these books get young people to read, still skewers Rowling:"The repeated tactic of deus ex machina has a deplorable effect on both plot and dialogue".Part 3 contains perhaps the most controversial (bizarrely) of all the writings "Why women aren't funny", written for an unimaginative, publicity seeking editor of Vanity Fair. Still managing to quote an interesting Kipling poem this disappointing rushed hack piece feels authored by a less talented Hitchens ghostwriter from GQ magazine. Definitely not disappointing in this section is Hitchens on Prince Charles:"A hereditary head of state, as Thomas Paine so crisply phrased it, is as absurd a proposition as a hereditary physician. To this innate absurdity, Prince Charles manages to bring fatuities that are entirely his own".Charles, Prince of Piffle. Slate, June 14, 2010.Part 4 is Offshore Accounts. Disraeli said in Tancred "the East is a career" and Hitchens partly took this to heart, writing extensively on politics, Islamism and Orientalism in the Middle East. It is on religion that Hitchens has shown much of his intellectual rigor and bravery. The reader may find in his review of Orientalism and It's Discontents by Robert Irwin in The Atlantic, March 2007 a description of a certain key religious figure as "a sex-craved brigand whose preachments were either plagiarized or falsified".This reader does not quite share the same fascination with this area of the world but one of the best essays in the book is here, a review of Edward Said's Orientalism, from the Atlantic, September 2003 - a book that was de rigor to be on your bookshelf when I was an MSc student in the late 1990s. Hitchens is quite fair to Said, although still slices him open with his accusation of membership of the "post-Foucault academy".Part 5, Legacies of Totalitarianism, ups the intellectual and moral ante. It is worth remembering that Hitchens was once a committed socialist, as documented in his entertaining memoir Hitch 22. Heavy reviews here include Churchill, Hitler and Unnecessary War by Pat Buchanan - a book I have reviewed on Amazon - Human Smoke by Nicholson Baker, and Klemperer's I Will Bear Witness (Klemperer was a Jew married to an Aryan who survived the war. This is sobering stuff and a reminder of the madness that could be inflicted on the world again by extremism and total war. Hitchens' quote from Sebald on the aftermath of the fire bombings of Dresden by the 'good guys' says it all:"In the altmarket in Dresden, where 6,865 corpses were burned on pyres in February 1945 by an SS detachment which had gained its experience in Treblinka". On the Natural History of Destruction by W.G. Sebald.

People hailed Christopher Hitchens as the greatest polemicist of our time -- I don't think that quite captures the essence of his writing. To borrow a quote from Tommy Boy, the man could sell a ketchup popsicle to a woman in white gloves, yes. He had vast knowledge, yes. He could wow you with his vocabulary, yes. But, the truly astonishing thing in his writing was his masterful use of imagery. Read his essay (in this book) on why women aren't funny -- the subtle imagery, even the sounds of the words he chooses to convey his meanings are cloaked in eroticism; a man subtly (and sometimes not so subtly) physically admiring women, under the pretext of insulting them. What an incredible writer! Even if you don't agree with him -- *especially* if you don't agree with him -- you should at least respect the works of someone who uses the language so well on so many different levels.

Here is America's man of letters, wielding his peculiar brand of wisdom, wit, and acerbic humor at its best and at the highest levels available in his adopted homeland: Taking no prisoners, and leaving no trace of blood on the killing floors as he pulls the stiletto from his victims, one-by-one.Not only does he define "what we are confronting" as a society, but he also sharpens the lens through which we see it. Clarity of thought and clarity of opinion through ruthlessly uncompromising honesty and English is what Hitch trades in. Though the story started a little slow for me, once it took off there was no stopping! There were twists and turns throughout and I didn’t have the ending didn’t develop as expected. Otto and Sheed are two African American cousins on their last day of summer. Not wanting their summer to end, they head out for one more day of detective work, for which they are known throughout the county. Little do they know, this will be the longest day of their lives! With the help of many others, they put their skills to the test. This is a great read for kids who like scifi/fantasy.

The Last Last-Day-of-SummerLamar GilesOtto and Sheed Alston are rather famous in Logan County. The cousins live with their grandmother in, Fry, Virginia. They are resident gumshoes, experts at solving problems having to do with odd experiences. The citizens of their town have given the key to the city twice. School starts tomorrow and the boys want one more adventure. They are discussing scenarios. A new mystery comes to town in the guise of Mr. Flux and a camera that freezes time. Mr. Flux gives the boys the camera explaining it will help them capture time; after taking two pictures a portal opens up and a strange man begins battling with Mr. Flux. The boys discover a group of odd characters and creatures having to do with time. After the guys manage to unfreeze a few people they seek help from Petey; he is an inventor. Petey is the crucial to the time problem; It has to do with a Missed Opportunity. Time Star help the boys learn about Petey’s past and about their future.That a fun read! The characters are fantastic. Otto and Sheed are adventurous, young, unique, creative, intelligent, and great problem solvers. Best of all they are likable. All of the characters are well developed. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep readers guessing and eagerly turning pages. This is a novel of fantasy. The guys get their last adventure before school starts. The target audience is nine and ten-year-old. This book is filled with small lessons for young people. Author Lamar Giles is a talented writer with quite an imagination. This book is delightful, fun-tastic, imaginative and unique.

They encounter the weird Mr. Flux, who tricks them into using a time-freezing Polaroid camera on the entire city. Although everything is frozen into motionlessness, consciousness and the ability to speak are not lost. Realizing the enormity of the crisis they have facilitated, the boys begin the quest to undo the catastrophe, and thus their epic begins. This story is “Time-ly” in every sense of the term. Although I reviewed an “advance reader copy” in which many of the illustrations had not yet been completed, those previewed suggest that the illustrations as well as the narrative will be exciting.

This is not an ordinary story about the last day of summer. Cousins Otto and Sheed (The Legendary Alston Boys) go looking for adventure and they find it! There's magic, monsters, robots and time travel. The characters had fun appealing personalities. The town was a bit crazy. Overall, a good story.

The Queensborough Bridge is something I discovered at age 3 in the front passenger seat of my father's 1951 Buick Special.The upper deck opened to cars in 1958. One thing the latest Gatsby film got wrong: no upper deck for auto racing in 1920. It was all el trains up there. You see that on the cover. My guess is Scott Fitzgerald knew that.

For anyone who has driven, walked, or just seen this area, it usually looked congested and a place where 'too much was put into too little.' This book gave me a sense of what it was supposed to look like, and how inviting it must have been to use it to travel into NYC from Queens. In addition, as a physics teacher, I was provided with some of the marvels of engineering that did always remind me an erector set! Worth the time for anyone who regularly travels through the area or has a nostalgic sense of its appearance.
