Review

“Mark Tennis is without a doubt the ‘go to’ authority on high school football in California. This book brings to life the storied history of CIF football with some of the greatest athletes the sport has ever seen. An enjoyable read which includes not just the history of the game, but most importantly the people who made the game what it is today.” --Roger Blake, Executive Director of the California Interscholastic Federation “This was a great read, and there is no one more qualified to write a book about the history of California football than Mark Tennis. If you're a stat geek like myself, you'll love the records and top 20 lists of the greatest players in state history. The backstories of California legends like Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and John Elway is worth the read alone and no one has more knowledge of the greatest program and coach in state history, the De La Salle Spartans and their legendary head coach Bob Ladouceur.” --Greg Biggins, National Recruiting Analyst for 247Sports “High School Football in California offers insight and intrigue into the history of the sport in the Golden State, from great players to prolific teams to memorable games. It doesn't matter if you are young or old, the stories will get you thinking and debating and reveal how important high school sports has been in the state.” -- Eric Sondheimer, high school sports editor, Los Angeles Times “If you like sports history, this is a must-read book. There are so many interesting facts and stories I didn't know prior to reading. I have known Mark Tennis for 39 years. He is the consummate expert and historian of all high school sports, especially California. It's perfect for your personal library.” --Bob Ladouceur, head coach of seven-time national champion De La Salle (Concord)

Happy to be the first to review “High School Football in California” ( feeling honored). Though I’m not an avid sports fan, I do enjoy football a great deal. Being from California, I can remember many of the teams and historic rivalries that used to be highlighted on the local news channels. I really appreciate the way this book has been thoughtfully organized: the rankings and statistics included toward the back, are easy to use references. The stories are very entertaining, and you don’t have to be a sports nut (which I’m not) to be engaged. I was recounting some aspects of this read to my father, who’s in his seventies. After his retirement, he and some buddies would go to his former high school and watch the football games. This book sparked a lively conversation and reminiscing about old grid iron days. He hasn’t shown that much spark in years. There’s something about the purity of athleticism in high school sports that is celebrated and preserved in this text. Perhaps the modern day football experience has evolved into a glossy, though less vibrant version of its former self. Perhaps its gotten to complicated, or sullied by celebrity. But there’s something about thinking back to the times when these athletes were just kids, playing a game they loved. These kids were our friends, our classmates, we knew them, helped them with their homework, watched them grow, and maybe they never made it to the NFL, but the effort and heart they put into their play should be remembered. This book will make sure they will be.

About 43 years ago, when I was the Prep Sports Editor at The Sacramento Bee, I received a one page hand-written letter, which included a list of “unverified” California high school football records. The writer signed his name as N. Tennis, Cal-High Sports.I was curious records and contacted Doug Huff in Wheeling, WV., the leading high school sports guru at the time regarding the letter and statistics. He verified most of the information, which intrigued me even more. With only a San Francisco address and no phone number on the letter, I had a hard time reaching Nelson Tennis. He was hesitant to do a phone interview for a story, but he finally relented…and Cal-Hi Sports was born. Where did Nelson find all the records? He scoured the newspapers at the UC Berkeley and San Francisco libraries almost every weekend searching for more records and information. Talk about dedication. For the next few years, me and my predecessor, continued to receive weekly hand-written updates, sometimes on 4x6 postcards, and use Nelson’s information where pertinent. Mark Tennis started working with his uncle his senior year of high school in the mid-70s and has taken Cal-Hi Sports to what it is today; the premier high school sports recording enterprise in California, if not the nation. His book on High School Football In California was way over due.The book is full of not only statistics, but wonderful stories about the schools, athletes and those individuals who have helped make California one of the best football states in the nation. The book appropriately concludes with the touching story of Charlie Wedemeyer and his courage to coach at Los Gatos High School, despite suffering from ALS. The story will bring tears to your eyes.I hope Mark writes a sequel…I’m sure there are many more stories to tell.(Side note to Mark: According to CIF Sac-Joaquin Section records, Valley Christian Academy in Roseville, enrollment 107, was the smallest school in California to still be playing 11-man football until this year when Stone Ridge Christian of Merced announced it’s enrollment at 103. All of the very small schools in the North Section have switched to 8-man football).Ben Bodding, Sacramento Bee Sports 1969-1977.

Being a Class of 1972 Carson Colts, glad the 1971 team was in this book. Loved the stories and enjoy the history of the CA High School football. Mark Tennis I bet could write volumes of other stories that didn't make the book. Thank you for writing this book. Walt Go Colts

Barons of the Sea: And Their Race to Build the World's Fastest Clipper Ship, by Steven Ujifusa

Review

“Full of remarkable characters and incredible stories, Steven Ujifusa’s Barons of the Sea is a fascinating, fast-paced history of America’s clipper ship era. Highly recommended.”  — Nathaniel Philbrick, National Book Award-winning author of In the Heart of the Sea“Fast-paced and entrancing... recounting freak storms, improbable romances, and mutinies on the high seas.... Ujifusa tells these stories with the verve of a natural dramatist.... Masterfully done.” — The Christian Science Monitor“Barons of the Sea is a riveting, raucous book. If you love the sea, it’s all here: dreams, money, ambition, and competition.”  — Jay Winik, bestselling author of April 1865  “Barons of the Sea moves as fast as a clipper ship at full sail. With a seemingly effortless command of the shared history of China and the United States in the nineteenth century, Ujifusa takes the reader on a rare and intoxicating journey back in time.”  — Candice Millard, bestselling author of Hero of the Empire  “Ujifusa has produced a carefully researched, lovingly written tribute to a now-vanished breed of ships and people, an entertaining chronicle of a few heady years when vision, speed, and daring helped the United States begin to establish its leading role on the world stage.” — Foreign Policy“Among the pleasures of Barons of the Sea is the author’s extensive knowledge of ship design and nautical history; the book is almost a beginner’s manual in sailing and is infused by a clear love for the regal triple-masters of the past.... The ships themselves, rather than the owners and captains, become the main characters.” — The Wall Street Journal“As learned as it is entertaining. Ujifusa has brought the golden age of American maritime commerce to vivid life. Extraordinary people and the wondrous clipper ships they built fill its pages with both great stories and deep insight into what makes humans of any age tick.” — John Steele Gordon, author of An Empire of Wealth“Barons of the Sea is a true adventure story. It’s got everything — wars, races, treasure and shipwrecks… You might drink a cup of tea with more reverence after reading this.” —  The Bowery Boys “Barons of the Sea has the... narrative ease of a novel. Occasionally funny and always richly detailed, this book paints a comprehensive portrait of an American era all but forgotten in the days of next-day delivery.” — Sail Magazine“This crisply told story of the race to build the fastest ship in the world reads like a thriller, reminiscent of the best of Nathanial Philbrick’s sea writing. It carries the reader along like a precious cargo on the high seas. I simply could not put it down.” — Admiral James Stavridis, Chairman of the US Naval Institute and former Supreme Allied Commander at NATO

Steven Ujifusa's brilliant book describes how a small fraternity of American shipbuilders, sailors, and trade merchants in the mid-19th century created a new class of fast wooden ships under sail -- clippers -- that helped build the young United States into one of the great powers of the world. Speed meant money when it came to transporting goods to and from China -- and those started with opium and tea. Americans weren't the only ones in the drug trade, which led to the Opium Wars between Britain and the Celestial Kingdom, but yes, opium was part of what made families like those of Warren Delano II, grandfather of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, great names and pillars of wealth and society in New York -- along with others like the Lows, the Grinnells, and the Minturns, and the Forbeses in Boston, and the Browns in Providence. The opium trade, FDR's grandfather maintained, was "fair, honorable, and legitimate," though it later faded in importance. The clippers themselves grew bigger and bigger, for bigger meant faster as they turned to even longer voyages around Cape Horn to California in the gold rush. Ultimately, the Boston shipbuilder Donald McKay's four-masted "Great Republic" displaced 4,555 tons, 335 feet from stem to stern when it was launched in New York in 1853 -- and then was nearly consumed by a fire in port. Transcontinental railroads and steamships displaced the clippers themselves a couple of decades later. This book shows how Americans went to China to make their way in Canton, how they survived in seas that could bring out the worst as well as the best in some of them, and how they built and paid for the clippers. By the time you finish, you'll know the difference between a futtock and a keelson, and fore, main, and mizzen topgallant sails, and you'll even have a pretty good idea of how it feels to be on deck while making 18 knots or more.

A fascinating forgotten world where fortunes were made and lost and led to he creation of powerful families whose exploits and investments shaped the US of today. This is a masterly presentation of the US in the early 19th century and the men who, desperate for wealth, clawed it from the sea. I tend to think of the US early in the 19th century as an inward-looking and not very worldly country. The eccentric New Englanders who built the China trade and became adoptive of sons of the richest man in China explode that vision of the of early US. Their beautiful fast sailing ships made their money, and shaped their lives. Single young American men who wanted to be rich dared life in mysterious China to reap the benefits of selling tea, silks, perfumes, and art back in the US--and selling opium, smuggled from Turkey and India, to China, devastated the country with the creation of addicts who destroyed their families with their craving for the drug. Imported opium in many forms of patent medicine addicted Americans, too, including many women who were socially approved for decades in their consumption of opium-laced laced health health postion. The life in China in the "foreign devils'" ghetto where Englishmen and Americans made their enormously profitable deals, was an entirely male society with plenty of risks.. Traders invested their earnings from the trade in new railroads and new factories or lost them lost in economic crashes. One trader, Warren Delano, made rich and comfortable by the trade and lost nearly everything in financial panics. At 50, he confessed to his wife that he needed to return to China to recoup his fortune. "Don't worry," he told her, "I promise to return in two years." In the 20th century, his grandson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt , powered in part by wealth from the opium trade, became President of the United States. Ujifusa's book brings the world of the clipper ships to life, the competition, the victories, the innovations, the avidity for money--the dynamism and the shames of the time--brilliantly to life.

This marvelous book is filled with fascinating stories, large personalities and lovely descriptions of clipper ships and what made them go fast in the water (complete with clear diagrams of hulls, masts and sails). The narrative moves easily from New England, to New York, to Canton, China, in the period of the Opium Wars in the first half of the 19th Century. The author vividly captures the sights, sounds and smells of Canton--bushels of dead bugs shoveled off ships before a cargo of tea was loaded and the ships sailed out, the damage to the Cantonese populace from the opium the ships had brought in, and the Pearl River "flower boats" (floating brothels) frequented by the Western merchant traders. Clipper ships later went around Cape Horn during the California Gold Rush, and Ujifusa tells us why some made money and some didn't.Warren Delano figures prominently in the book. His grandson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, became President in the next century. Delano made his fortune by going to Canton at age 24, and later settled with his family on an estate on the Hudson River. But he went bankrupt in the Panic of 1857. So in 1859, at age 50, he left his wife and six children behind to sail again to Canton to earn back his fortune. His daughter Sara, later FDR's mother, was then just five. In telling the story of Warren Delano, Ujifusa gives us the best description of New England Yankees I have ever read.Ujifusa also deftly captures, in quick takes, much about America in the age just before, during, and after Andrew Jackson: the burgeoning capitalist economy, the changing social customs, even the architecture of New York where the steeple of Trinity Church downtown was the tallest structure in the city. One learns a lot, and very enjoyably, in reading this fine book.

great book, helps a lot in the game

The book was bent in half and deformed, I'm not sue if it was because of postal worker carelessness or if it was already that way but it's a delicate book and now I'm afraid to handle it because too much struggling with the bent pages might cause more wear.

Fragile Path is a book intended towards an audience that wants to see through the classic "Heylel was the bad guy who delivered the First Cabal to the Order of Reason". Divided in 5 parts, each one written by a different survivor of the Fall of the First Cabal, and each one representing it's corresponding style, the book does a great job explaining the different views (caused by the fact of different people belonging to different Traditions and beliefs). Although not a systems tool, which could disappoint some gamers, it's a great addition to anyone's Mage collection.

I actually don`t own this book, but my storyteller does and I borrowed it from him. The story is great, the plot is magnificent. I couldn`t believe what an amazing book this was, so I wanted a copy for me. This is one of the best books available if you really want to know what happened back then. I think this book is a must for Mage storytellers, either Mage:TSC or Mage:TA because it helps you with a different point of view.

There is a jacket blurb on The Weight of Glory from John Updike, who comments on both the comfort and pleasure afforded by Lewis. Neither should be underestimated. This is great devotional writing but it is also great writing, writing that is typified by Lewis' ability to deal with the weightiest of matters with a light touch. It is a truism that our faith is reinforced whenever we see it embraced by great minds. Samuel Johnson believed that and it is interesting that Lewis often turns to Johnson for such reinforcement, as we turn to Lewis--one of the indisputably great intellectuals of the twentieth century. Part of that greatness comes from the stark clarity with which Lewis sees important matters. That makes his work accessible; it does not make it simplistic. All of the lay sermons in this volume are trenchant, though 'The Weight of Glory' and 'Learning in War-Time' are exceptional. I especially like 'Is Theology Poetry?' and 'Membership' and find 'Why I Am Not a Pacifist' of particular interest and importance these days. This is a book to be read, embraced, and shared.

The C. S. Lewis book titled “The Weight of Glory” is actually a collection of essays or lectures made by Lewis. The title of the book comes from the first of these lectures and is also the most quoted of them. Since this book is a compilation, I provide below a brief overview of each essay below. The Weight of Glory 6/8/1941 – In this address, Lewis first talks about the longings we each have: the deep longing for something which no experience on earth satisfies though we have faint glimpses of, like a memory of something long ago. It’s the desire that beauty stirs within us, the longing to be fully immersed and joined into the beauty. It’s what others have described as the God shaped void within us. Lewis argues that this longing proves that there must be a world where this longing can be fulfilled and that we are made for that world.Lewis takes some time to discuss the idea of rewards received for work. First, there are rewards which are not directly connected to the work, such as being paid to clean for example. Then there are rewards which are clearly organically tied to the effort to obtain them, such as a good marriage is the reward for loving one’s spouse. Lewis points out that while the former can be accused of only doing the work for the reward, this makes no sense to say in the latter case. Lewis also notes that some rewards, while organically tied to the effort taken to obtain them, aren’t recognized as desirable until one has obtained them or is at least closer to that goal. Lewis uses the example that one wouldn’t know they enjoy Greek poetry until after they had gone through the work of learning Greek.Lewis believes that heaven is like this. I think he conceived of everything in heaven as being of a higher order than things of this world. Thus he talks about how we improperly long for worldly things, which are really a false substitute for the heavenly things we ought to long for.Lewis spends most of the remainder of the lecture talking about glory. He thinks that while seeking fame on earth may be conceited, desiring to please God is not. This is the first sense of glory. The second is in how we will “shine” as God’s masterpieces. Lewis considers this idea that God can take delight in us to be something so amazing that we can barely believe it—the “weight or burden of glory”.Finally, Lewis discusses how we ought to keep other’s glory in mind when considering those around us and how this ought to keep us humble.Learning in War-Time 10/22/1939 – Lewis addresses how study can seem to be a trivial pursuit during war time. His argument is primarily that we must engage in normal human activity whatever the circumstances are. And there is always some crisis or matter which may seem more important. For example, the matter of heaven and hell is always present and more significant than war. Study is a necessary undertaking to which some have been called and which they should work at despite distraction, frustration and fear. Why I’m not a Pacifist 1940 – Lewis first lays a foundation from which he will build the rest of his arguments. The foundation consists of Lewis’ view of the conscious as having two parts: a drive to do what is right and beliefs about what right and wrong are. Lewis next explains his concept of reason by which he will address the latter portion of the conscious. A reasonable argument, says Lewis, consists of facts, “intuition”, and a series of linked, logical propositions. What Lewis means by intuition is that which can’t be argued but with which virtually everyone agrees, such as love is good and hate is bad. (Lewis believes that people “must be trained in obedience to the moral intuitions…”, an idea he also addresses in The Abolition of Man.) Authority is also an important consideration in deciding a matter, both because we don’t have time to examine every belief and because our beliefs are liable to be corrupted. After all this groundwork, Lewis finally begins making his case. First, he considers the fact of whether or not all wars do more harm than good, concluding that “history is full of useful wars as well as of useless wars.” He next examines whether the intuition of love as better than hate (or helping as better than harming) leads to pacifism or not. First, he recognizes that we are incapable of helping everyone so that to help one means not helping another. He then states that if two parties are in conflict, for an observing party to do nothing would violate the intuition. (He assumes that action would come in the form of physical intervention and violence.) From here says, “The question is whether war is the greatest evil in the world…”. This shows that he thinks of pacifism as the view that war should never be engaged in. And the only reason he could see to take this position would be if it could be argued that war is always worse than the alternative. After this, he argues that pacifism is impractical, because pacifists will be overcome by those who are not.Turning next to authority, Lewis argues that human authority, both specific (England at that time) and general (“righteous war” praised throughout history) support war.Examining at last divine authority, Lewis argues that current Christian authority and Christian history both support violence. The only verse which Lewis apparently can think of which might support pacifism is Matthew 5:39, “Do not resist an evil person”. Lewis believes Jesus here is addressing personal revenge and considers Paul and Peter’s talk about government using the sword as support for Christians using the sword. Lastly Lewis considers his bias and argues that since it would be more convenient to be a pacifist, it is more likely for one to be biased towards it. In other words, not finding a logical reason to be pacifist nor authoritative support, Lewis concludes that people must be pacifist because it is easier and more convenient for them to do so.1Transposition 5/28/1944 – Essentially, as I understand it, Lewis is addressing the argument that since alleged supernatural works of the Holy Spirit manifest as naturally explainable phenomenon, isn’t it more reasonable to believe all such instances are simply natural, not supernatural? Lewis’ argument is that the “higher” spiritual must be transposed into the “lower” natural world and must therefore use otherwise natural means to do so. He uses the metaphor of how we attempt to represent three-dimensional reality in two-dimensional drawings. Is Theology Poetry? 11/6/1944 – Lewis addresses the question of if our beliefs about God (and even in the existence of God) are merely fanciful and quaint ideas we hold sentimentally but without any true reality behind them. The Inner Ring 12/14/1944 – Lewis speaks about the desire to be “in” and accepted along with the fear of being left out and rejected. He warns against the danger of doing wrong in order to fit in as well as the fleeting nature of the sense of being “in”.Membership 2/10/1945 – Lewis refutes the idea of Christianity as a private, individual, personal matter alone. He takes some time to differentiate between groups whose members are different but complementary (metaphor of church as a body) and mere collections of like people or things. Lewis also touches on hierarchy and authority. Overall, Lewis basically argues against isolated individualism on one hand and homogeneous collectivism on the other. On Forgiveness 8/28/1947 – Lewis talks about God’s forgiveness of our sins. He explores the difference between excusing (I understand, no big deal, etc.) and true forgiveness as well as how this relates to forgiving others.A Slip of the Tongue 1/29/1956 – Lewis warns against the temptation to “play” at Christianity which comes from the desire to hold onto the things of the world. Refusing to let go of these things causes one to not get too spiritual to the point which would require real change in their life.

I would definitely recommend The Weight of Glory to any Christian with questions about living a life of faith. Lewis especially targets the college student population with his great understanding and use of logical arguments. He deals with practical concerns and pragmatic solutions. He serves the truth of the Bible with the hope found in God. In this book, Lewis attempts to address common issues young Christians struggle with as they try to own their faith in a post-World War culture. For example, in the chapter “Learning in Wartime,” he says, “If we let ourselves, we shall always be waiting for some distraction or other to end before we can really get down to our work.” Procrastination: every college student has experienced it, and Lewis responds to it. He demonstrates an understanding off the issues, along with the feelings and emotions young people would have concerning them. He’s thorough in his logic and has obviously thought things through. In The Weight of Glory, he begins by emotionally tugging on the reader, then hits him with a sound argument, and leaves him with practical advice on how to continue living as an enlightened Christian. He brings himself on the same level as his readers; he doesn’t leave them with the lofty opinions of a scholar, but with the guidelines of one experienced Christian to a younger. In his explanations and arguments, Lewis uses a lot of analogies. This is extremely helpful as he tries to explain himself and illustrate his point, however, he sometimes takes the analogies too far. He overuses some analogies and stretches them too far. This book has made my faith stronger and inspired me to live a more thoughtful life as a Christian. I want to read more of Lewis’ works and delve more deeply into his doctrine.

This is a series of essays on various Christian questions. C.S. Lewis is my favorite author in this field. I first came to know his writings through reading 'Mere Christianity'. I listen to Christian radio and Charles Colson had commented that it was 'Mere Christianity' that brought him to be a Christian. So I read the book. No one can say that C.S. Lewis is light reading. And this book is no exception. It does take concentration and quiet time to grasp the concepts discussed. But I am enjoying the book very much. The one thing that C.S. Lewis does best is using irrefutable logic to explain his position. After finishing an essay, you are left with a thought of 'Wow' and the desire to read it again.
