The 4th Edition of Battle Angel Alita continues with brawls in the motorball arena, but a new process in our cute cyborg's life has begun, even as she keeps playing the same fierce game. Alita is no longer hiding from the pain of the past; she's rebuilding her memory with bricks made from the acrobatic violence all around.A kaleidoscope of violence coordinates this story: gladiatorial violence taming the masses, random violence shattering lives, suicidal violence signaling defiance, and violence transcending reality itself. All these manifestations fit the logic of the story. I, however, believe that violence offers no transcendence, only wounds or death.The best "Moment of Art" I found is a cell that shows Alita obliterating the head of a drug addict with a palm-heel strike, an addict who had just murdered Ed, her motorball mentor. Kishiro's drawing fuses Alita's horror and fury into a moment of vengeance free from any doubts about innocence. Sadly, life almost never gives us such moral clarity. I give the 4th edition four stars due to my apparent philosophical differences with the author.Tony Baus is also the author of Son of Sloan

This is the fourth Alita collection, although it is officially the last of part three of the series. As such, it marks the culmination of Alita's identity quest into the world the motorball. What Alita has discovered is that use of her special cyborg battle training skills can trigger sudden flashbacks to the days before Doc Ido reassembled her as Alita. These come as peak experiences when the doughty fighter must push her body to withstand what no biological body could.We get to see to of these battles. The first Alita uses to test both herself and the cyborgs with whom she is considering teaming. This is an opportunity for both melee battles and some fine humorous moments when things do not quite happen as planned. The second struggle is the final confrontation with Jashugan. This we know will end up in a one-on-one confrontation between titans. The reader is entitled to, and gets, all the action art and surprises of which Yukito Kushiro is capable. Who wins isn't important at the transcendent moment, only that both have used up all that they had.I'm probably going to go on and on about the art for this series until I run out of manga to review. Yukita Kishiro has the kind of graphic style that makes the frames magnetic. The story, the diversity of characters and the introspective twists are an important part of this manga, and keep it from ever being a simpleminded hack and disassemble story. Something deeper is going on, and we see it evolve one small piece at a time.

After giving us the excellent volumes 1 and 2, "Battle Angel Alita" and "Tears of an Angel", Yukito Kishiro gave us what many consider the worst volume in the series, "Killing Angel". Volume 3 dealt with Alita's new life after the tragic events of volume 2, and while it wasn't a complete blashemy against the series, the storytelling quality didn't live up to the first two volumes. With volume 4, "Angel of Victory", Kishiro improves upon "Killing Angel", but considering what he worked with, the storytelling quality still wasn't where it should've been."Angel of Victory" is actually a continuation of "Killing Angel", a continuation meaing that the two volumes can be seen as parts of each other. The story deals with Alita trying to prove herself the best motorball champion while coming to terms with the sudden changes in her life. By now, her character is very well fleshed out and we really do care for her in many ways. However, the story in "Angel of Victory" still deals with motorball, something that doesn't have anything to do with Alita trying to discover her lost past, the reason we fell in love with her in the first place. The story in "Angel of Victory" is far better than the one in "Killing Angel", as it has several well-planned events and even a brief glimpse of Alita's past. But as a whole, the story isn't want we expected from the "Battle Angel Alita" series. If volumes 3 and 4 had been placed together into one volume, they might've been seen in a better light, but as it stands the two volumes are nothing compared to the first two volumes.Graphically, Yukito Kishiro's artwork is amazing. There is so much detail that some artwork appears like it's come straight from a photo. If it had to be compared to something, Kishiro's artwork would resembled a polished version of Hayao Miyazaki's "Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind" series, and even then the comparison is unfair.All in all, "Angel of Victory" is far better than "Killing Angel", but it's not the best in the series. Still, "Angel of Victory" does set up some small plot details later on in the series, so it's not completely useless. If read with the entire series on hand, "Angel of Victory" (and "Killing Angel", for that matter) will be more appreciated. But alone, volume 4 doesn't live up to the first to excellent volumes in Kishiro's wonderful series.

This was the first Battle Angel Alita book I ever read, borrowing it from the library. But, since I read 1,2, and 3 AFTER this, I've liked the motorballs better. I think this is a kewl book, I wish I'd happened to read #1 first, tho, but this all works out. I loved it! Simply, Alita is finishing what she started with motorball, what with racing and winning, winning, losing, whataver. Her showdown with Jashugan kinda leaves u, uh... confused (at least it did me V_V) and it never says more. THE REASON I GAVE THIS A 4-STAR RATING IS BECAUSE... the index page (copyright, idex, etc.) is the one of TEARS OF AN ANGEL! what's up with that?? i just realized that one day, looking to see what part it was. and that {is odd.}

I liked the premise of this book, a group of soon-to-retire witches must find their replacements to pass on their magic and spell book. Things go awry when Olivia is murdered. Not only murdered but their spell book was stolen.Molly (married to a non-magical policeman,) and Elsie are left with their sorrow as well as dealing with still sourcing out new witches. Who murdered Olivia, a witch or a non-witch and why? I mean these witches are not special but are slowly losing their abilities when the years passing.A nice cozy read.

I don't think I am a mean-spirited person, but for the life of me I cannot fathom where the 4 & 5 star reviews are coming from. I have not read this author team before, so I can't compare it with other books they have written. The premise here that witches become seniors with erratic powers seemed amusing but I had to force myself to finish the book. There was no meaningful character development & I have to admit I could not feel empathy for any of them. They were like cardboard cut-outs who needed minders. The young witch, Dorothy, was positively insipid. She was an insult to librarians everywhere. Secondary characters popped in and out of nowhere with little explanation or motivation for their actions. The plot was disjointed and silly, with some actions brutish and others vulgar. It aimed for whimsy but just ended up leaving a very bad taste behind.

This book just didn't work for me. I never connected with the characters and found them rather silly and not in a fun way but in a I'm rolling my eyes way. They were very immature and some of the scenes (like selling tickets to poke the witch) were just ridiculous. I had hoped the mystery would save this book but I didn't find it well written. Throughout the mystery we are given some obvious red herrings but when you get to the final part of the book the culprit was someone that had no real motive or involvement in the previous part of the book. I want a few hints along the way in my mysteries so that I at least stand a chance of figuring it out. What I don't want is the villain dumped in my lap with a motive manufactured in the last few pages just to wrap things up.I also felt the pacing was off and the middle of the story bored me as the witches ran around following clues that led them nowhere. So while some may like this it wasn't my cup of tea.

Three older witches are trying to find replacements so they can retire. Unfortunately one of them is murdered and the other two try to find the murderer.I really enjoyed this book. I liked the quirkiness of the characters. I liked that they were not young but my age and older. As I got to know them and the world in which they live, I got into the story. I looked forward to getting home from work to pick it up and get back into this world. Wonderful world building!The mystery was believable. I did not figure out who it was. I kept thinking other people outside of who Molly and Elsie believed. When the murderer is finally revealed I was shocked. Not what I expected.This is a quick read but so satisfying. I look forward to more in this series.

If you’re in the mood for a comic one, *Spell Booked* is a very good choice! The characters are vivid and down-to-earth, their setting is rich with detail, the plot complicated. I giggled at the interactions among the core trio of witches, especially after one of them . . . changes, and I enjoyed the flashes of deeper feeling that arose from the storyline.The story opens in Wilmington, North Carolina, with a coven of witches who are getting up in years and want to retire. But they can’t do so until they recruit new witches to take their place. (Why this should be so is not really spelled out.) Their efforts in this direction are interrupted by murder, break-ins, thefts, and other mayhem. Although the husband of the central character is a police detective and the police are trying to investigate these crimes, most of the detecting has to be done by the witches, because regular humans are not supposed to know about witchly matters.The Wilmington setting is described, but not with a specificity that would have made me feel I was there (could have been more atmospherics to make the setting seem less generic). There also could have been a little more backstory; despite the fact that this is the first novel in the Retired Witches series, we seem to be pitched into the middle of an ongoing situation right at the beginning, and it took me a while to get on board. Because it is part of a series, there are also some threads left dangling at the end. But the core story had a satisfying arc and there was enough resolution that you don’t feel tricked into buying the next one right away! You may want to, though, if you develop as much affection for the characters as I did.

They are trying to recruit some younger witches to take their place in their Curio shop so that they can retire. They have their eye on the local librarian in town, when they find out that Olivia has been murdered!Molly's husband is a cop and received the call about Olivia's death! There is only one thing that Molly does not share with her husband, Joe, that she is a witch! Also that her friends are witches too!The book is way cool as the two remaining friends with some help try to find out who killed Olivia! The book kept my interest until the very end with many concepts about air witches, water witches and spell books, some werewolves were thrown in to round out the paranormal experience!I enjoyed the experience and wished that both authors were still living so they could still be writing such great books!I cannot wait for our book discussion on Facebook on this book, it should be a good one!

The best book I've read in years. I bought the set of three about Grandma Dowdel for gifts for my sisters and close friends and they agree with me. Even though they are for junior high aged kids, we are all enjoying them. They are passing them around to their friends also... if you want to read a book that will make you laugh out loud I highly recommend these three books ... Richard Peck is a great author!!!!

The book is just as entertaining today as it was when I was nine. :) The adventures of Grandma Dowdel are astoundingly hilarious and it paints a picture of life during the Great Depression. I recommend it those who are already fans of Richard Peck's works, or those who want to try his work for the first time. Great for readers of all ages. I even got a new copy from Amazon for less than $10. I hope you enjoy a copy should you decide to buy one.

The book is about life during the depression and recession years. The protagonist , Mary Alice, is 15 and needs to leave her parents in Chicago and move to her grandma's house in a little town.She grows into adulthood with her grandma.Grandma has a personal and unsuspecting way to solve different situations. The author did a very good job in describing the dynamics of the characters and keeps the reader's attention constant to the plot.The author illustrates and solves problems through short shores. The actions are unexpected and many times funny. All the plots in the book keep the attention of the reader.The story gives opportunities for the reader to analyze many different relationships and to think about life, losses, self defense, helpfulness and love.The book is intended for teenaged but I recommend it also for adults. This book shows how people's problems can be solved in different ways.

Wonderful story. Our family never gets tired of hearing this on road-trips . . .I think its been 10 years at least and we probably have heard it at least 20 times. It's read/performed by Lois Smith and she does a wonderful job. We have tried to listen to the other Richard Peck stories, but the reader was very annoying to listen too.

If you need a real, honest to goodness laugh, read A Year Down Yonder. I'm 56 and never too old for fun kiddie lit. This story and it's companion story -- a Long Way from Chicago are charming, funny reads that are sure to bring a smile to your face and a laugh to your day. I love the stories about Grandma. She is some kind of amazing old gal. I wish I'd had a grandma just like her. I read these stories to my kids -- and I hope to one day read them to my grandkids. I remember hearing my boys laughing as we'd read them at bedtime. Priceless.

I love this book and also it's companion book "A long way from Chicago", I think is the name. They are so funny and yet also teach about kindness, not judging, and many other values that seem to be missing in today's world.

Richard Peck fan! I use A Long Way From Chicago every year as a read together book for my 6th grade literature classes! Love that Grandma Dowdel!!! This is the sequel to it. SO MUCH FUN!!!

This was such a good book and it was even a school book!! This is the second book in the series though. Both books are really good. The First book is called "A Long Way From Chicago." I really recommend that you read this book. I enjoyed reading it a lot!!
