While Covenant can be read as a stand alone book if needed, reading the others will greatly increase your enjoyment. There are several "easter eggs" in this novel as well as characters that are in the other series.I have never been disappointed by this author. For this price, the novel is quite a bargain. Let's hope that the author has many other stories to tell.
While I am a voracious reader I seldom write a review. That said this book is one of the few that I would be remiss to not complement the author. I really should say series, because I read both books in this series over a weekend. I find very few books that I just refuse to put down, the two in this series were of that caliber. I have now read all the books out in the three series that the author has going on at the same time. Normally I would think this rather distracting but so far it is not. While I like the other series very much, this one, to me, is by far the best. I see that the next one in this series will not come out until 2019 and I am a little crest fallen. I certainly will read the books coming out in 2018 that cover the other timelines, but will look forward with strained patience for the next one in this timeline. My hope for this author is that he becomes more successful and will be able to focus all his time on his writing. We need more books like this.
Let me start by confessing that I am a total fan of the Seventh and Steiger. I read this version chapter by chapter as it was published by Mr. Edelheit and loved it then, so had to purchase the total book to support the author. And to see if any changes were made to the first version. I recommend this for anyone who likes Military fiction with a dash of fantasy. It is not a children's tale as it contains extreme violence and death - hey, it's about an army legion fighting what I presume are the Gauls (or their equivalent on this imaginary world). If and when the next book in the series is published I will read that and will also recommend it. This tale does flesh out some of the development of the main character and how he became so well liked by his men. It is also most enertaining. This one you can buy without having read any of the other tales of the Seventh, but you will likely be hooked and wind up buying them all. Just a friendly warning.
As a number of reviewers noted this is a short offering. It is not however a weak story. ME writes a taut tale developing more depth to the Stiger main character and introducing Eli to the story. The only reason to complain about the book length is that we fans want to settle in for a looong experience. Editing, plot and realism were as expected...superb. It was delightful to see other ancient battles of note interwoven in the tale. At this stage ME can do no wrong.
I have enjoyed every book by this author. That said, I believe the two "Tales of the Seventh" books are my current favorites. Fort Covenant, had one POV (my personal preference). There is some mystery, action and lots of character development and world building. The author does a great job incorporating information into the narrative so I never felt bored or like I was attending a lecture. However, I always learn something (usually several somethings) from each of his books. I'm already looking forward to the next!
Well Marc has done it again! The minute I know he has released another tale I grab it and start reading, I don't put it down until it is finished ! He spins tales like a master story teller of olden times and keeps you yearning for me when he is finished. Not many authors have this skilll set these days, oh sure they write well enough, but they are lacking in ways that Marc brings together in each of his stories. He is a Master of his craft and I am excited for his next installment and would recommend this too just about anyway who enjoys an adventure with a wonderful plot and excellent characters that you grow to love !!
A fast paced book carrying on from the first prequel book. In this novel, Stiger and his troops are on a mission and are being hunted by a Rivan company. Through a series of manoeuvres they are able to lose the hunters, and in turn ambush a Rivan outpost. Stiger then stumbles upon a Rivan flanking attempt and must try and save the 3rd Legion from being flanked.
Stepping back to shed some light on the beginning of Ben Stigers career in the legion. This story gives perspective on the character who becomes a great leader. This story is as well written and riveting as the other stories featuring this character. The combination of historically correct information about the Roman Legion along with the fantasy world the author has created makes this a joy to read.
