Full disclosure...I have known Brian since we were 6. I haven't seen him in 20 years but seeing his work it is like we still were in school together. The illustrations bring the story to life and the story is worth learning. Some day I'll be able to follow the advice. Great effort from Brian.
I read this on a plane, cracking up throughout the book. I'm sure my seatmates found me a little crazy -- first for reading an actual book, secondly for laughing so loudly. I couldn't help myself. If you read the pages and look at the drawings, you can't help yourself. It's a quick read, but very, very funny, and a little deep actually. There is some good stuff in here -- I highly recommend it. I donated the book to my local public library so that others can enjoy the book as well - and I'm sure I'll check it out again.

I found Death’s year off moving, hilarious, and relatable all at once. His adventurous spirit and delight in each day, even when things were awkward or lonely, really touched and inspired me so much. I plan to share it with everyone I know!
If you haven’t ever read the New York Times Modern Love column (I don’t) or own copy of Blink The Power of Thinking without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell, illustrated by the inimitable Brian Rea, you might not have a clue as to who this guy is. If not, you’ll definitely enjoy his sense of humor and marvelous ability to spin a yarn. One important bit of information to note, is that “this book is not about dying.†In spite of the portrait of the Grim Reaper on the cover, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Death does indeed know how to live and live well.Like many of us, we simply don’t know how to live, but Death let’s us know that we can indeed. Death, who is on a lengthy sabbatical after being told he just has to take those accumulated days off. What if any of us happened to face this year-long dilemma? Well Death puts on his thinking cap and heads off to Wee Travels to check out those vacation destinations. And so he begins ... making me laugh at the entire human race, but mostly chuckling at my own life.The Grim Reaper, Death, made up his mind and off he went. It was as if he was working on a bucket list. Of course my favorite adventure was in the month of March when Death showed up at the carnival. I loved traveling with him as he insists we go (who hasn’t) after checking out those crowds. Of course when he tosses the ping pong ball in order to win a goldfish and wins, I was hooked. Now who hasn’t tried to snag that goldfish? I do know when a youngster wins it, the pet stores win BIG when you have to buy an aquarium, but I digress (nothing new there).This is just one of those books that will draw anyone in, even the most curmudgeonly among us. The storyline is uproariously inane, the artwork equally so. It’s a quick read, no doubt, but really made me think about life. Probably about time to make out a new bucket list and, while gas is cheaper, get in the car and have some fun before the real Grim Reaper shows up. Clearly, Death works here. I think he's in the next cubicle over.This is an extremely cute and relatable book in which Death is told by HR that he needs to take some vacation time. A lot of it. So, with a huge amount of PTO, Death fulfills all his dreams...yes, including winning that goldfish.Death's sabbatical is adorable and made me smile again and again.After I read it, my 10 year old stole it and read it as well. This book is hilarious, clever, and thought-provoking. It’s a quick read. The drawings are terrific. Most are charmingly crude and expressive, and every once in a while, he’ll flex his artistic muscle and toss in a gorgeous illustration to remind you it’s all as he designed and intended.Okay, on to our hero. The Grim Reaper is an absolute workaholic. HR tells him he must take all his accumulated time-off at once, a full year, with no time to prepare. He’s completely thrown-off by this complete reversal, where he has to think about living life and get about the business of living. He starts journaling. He’s thoughtful, reflective, and surprisingly deep. I had mistakenly assumed he’d be a one dimensional character. Not so.Then he creates a bucket list that’s pretty impressive and gets to work on all those check-boxes, but he’s not just checking things off. He’s in the moment. He’ll have you wondering if you’re as present in your own life.Seriously terrific. I loved the book. If you love clever, thoughtful humor, I think you will, too.*I received a copy to explore and share my thoughts.
