"K-19: The Widowmaker" by retired USN Captain Peter Huchthausen is a worthwhile companion to the movie and provides much of the factual background omitted from the film, which was based on the events revealed here. I was a fan of the film overall, but would have preferred a strictly factual retelling without altering the biographies of the crew and some of the interpersonal drama that was seemingly exaggerated for the big screen. Having said that, I have no reservations about the book, as it is a quick and compelling read that covers far more than simply the K-19 and its trials. At the outset I'd like to mention that in the Soviet Navy K-19 did have a nickname but it wasn't "The Widowmaker", it was the much more straightforward "Hiroshima". Thankfully due to the bravery and ingenuity of the Soviet submariners a larger nuclear tragedy was averted on July 4, 1961, and the book focuses on this specific case and in general on the difficult conditions faced by members of the Soviet navy (particularly in comparison with Rickover's nuclear navy in the US).There are other great books on Cold War nuclear submarines that are more comprehensive than this, but the real gem here is that it contains large and very insightful passages from the memoirs of the K-19's Captain, Nikolai Zateyev. That he was a brilliant leader is a given, but his insider critiques of the Soviet navy are both scary and informative. The book discusses a number of other Soviet naval calamities, many of which were never known about in the West due to strict military security protocols. Finally, the book covers the disposition and ongoing environmental threats related to the decaying Russian nuclear infrastructure: this is a problem that will not be resolved for generations, and before reading this book I didn't completely grasp the scope of the situation, which is grave indeed.I highly recommend "K-19: The Widowmaker" by Peter Huchthausen as an insightful expose on the K-19 accident specifically, but as a critique of Soviet submarine design, construction, and operation in general. Rarely has an indictment of an institution been as well told or scathing.

Captain Huchthausen makes a brilliant and captivating history which raises this submarine crew to hero status no matter what country you live in. One of the members of K-19's crew, Vasily Archivpav, later sailed on B-59 in October 1962, during the Cuban Missle Crisis.. Vasily was the fleet commander of a flotlla of 4 diesel-electric subs, all carrying nuclear tipped torpedoes. The captain of B-59 had authority to fire his torpedoe along with the assent of the political officer. Because of his horrible experience on K-19 a year earlier he overrode their order to fire, preventing WW III.This singular incident had a different outcome because of the crew of K-19. Frankly, there should be a World Memorial in every country for the heroism of these two Russian commanders, at least one in Moscow and one in Washington DC, Captain Zateyev and fleet commander Archipav. SALUTE!

As an older book, it never ceases to amaze me the perspective of an insiders view of nuclear submarines (Soviet), and the need to rush into production numerous models that weren't fully tested. It shows the military and I know even ours, the penchant to cover up messes, make scape goats, all the usual political ploys.the appreciation doesnlt come from the insiders view or we are better than they are. the appreciation stems from they were highly dedicated and they believed with all there heart and soul they were defending there country against all enemei4es both foreign and domestic. As a young officer in 1970, I viewed the soviets as a brainwash hoard waiting to overrun us. I never saw us through there eyes. Bravery comes int he form of a 19 year old sailor who gave his life to save his shipmates, bravery comes from a young officer who did the same. There bravery comes from love of life and country.I recommend you read the book, see the movie by the same name and view life through glasses that aren't rose colored.

I served on submarines and this was an excellent description of life and tragedy. Great research by author.

As a retired cold war submariner I was shocked by the atrocities that my enemy (but brother) submariners were subjected to in the Soviet Navy. We always heard rumors of the conditions these young men were subjected to but, due to their closed society, they remained rumors. This book is a must read for any US Navy submariner. We can only thank the almighty that we lived in an open society and sailed on ships where safety was the prime concern. Say what you might about Hyman Rickover and his tyrant ways, he did his job well and we were relatively safe from radiation and fairly sure we would return from the depths.

There are a number of pictures of how to use moss in the garden, a section of some famous Japanese moss gardens, and a delightful introduction to 25 common mosses. And the photos are large enough to provide the detail that the reader needs to become familiar with the moss.It’s easy to follow Annie Martin’s step-by-step tutorials on how to design, plant, and care for moss in the garden. Importantly she goes into detail about steps you need to take to determine where moss will grow well in your garden. My husband and I really enjoyed following her suggestions for assessing our yard and were delighted to locate moss that is already growing on our property. I bought the book this winter (I live in Michigan) and using this book we have already started two small gardens in different locations on our property. And we have just begun!

I have always loved the look of moss and now after being inspired by this awesome book I can't wait to get started incorporating moss into my garden. As a master gardener I love trying new things. The internet is full of misinformation on how to get moss growing. I always thought it was a bogus idea blending moss with buttermilk among other things, Annie agrees this is not a way to get moss started. A thorough book that allows even a beginner gardener to start mossin'. I bought this to start adding a moss component to my shady medicinal garden - I wanted info on how to start actually propagating moss rather than just waiting and hoping it shows up - and Annie Martin's book didn't disappoint. After reading it, I came away excited and ready to jump right in and start moss gardening!

Our lawn is going to moss. It is greener, stays greener all season, than our grass ever did. Helped in identifying the several types of moss growing now and how to spread or multiply its area, and take care of it. Glad we found and read this book. Whenever we asked our "spray and run" lawn service about moss, we just got blank stares and no comment. They would only say that we need to get rid of the moss and sod our lawn (very expensive and requires more "spray and run" chemicals). We have one side yard in 100% moss (very shading there) and it is great. The other side is now in process, but may take a year or so -- kind of letting nature do much of the work.

So bought this book and showed it to my sister, and she took it! Then she showed it to a good friend, and the friend took it! Who knows where my original book went - out to the mossin' yonder. About the Author

Peter Raymundo was 21 years old when he went to work for Walt Disney Studios as part of their Feature Animation Division. My kids loved 3rd grade Mermaid, so they were ecstatic when this came out. If you were a fan of the first book, you know that you need this one. My kids are dying for the next book!

Wonderful book! We’ve read and re-read it a bunch of times! Great size to carry in your purse or carry on and read while on the train too!

My 8 year old daughter loves this book. Illustrations on every page, which hold mu young reader's attention (6 year old brother even likes to read along). Beautiful and charming characters. Very entertaining and funny. Enjoyable for young and old.

My 10 yr old daughter loves these books! I can’t honestly say I’ve read any of them myself, but she curls up and reads them like she’s reading a mystery novel!

Absolutely, positively favorite book of my third grader. I really wish there were more in this series because she loves them!

My son loves books - not just any books but books with good graphics and a good and/or catchy story.... this has both. It rhymes (which is cool but I warn you it may take a few reads to get your tongue untwisted lol) and its funny - makes it fun to read to him.

This is a really sweet story of enemies finding an unlikely friendship. Very nice beat to the words. My 3.5 year old loves this story! Highly recommend.

This book is delightful. It has a good rhyme scheme and story. My son has enjoyed it every time we have read it, and so have I. No worries about getting sick of reading this book over the years.

This book is a hit with my 3 and 5 year old girls. I bought it at a bookstore while traveling, and we all liked it so much that I'm buying another copy for a friend's four-year-old son (whose name also happens to be James, like the little boy in the book). It's a fun book to read, and it has a sweet message about friendship.
